To think some rap music is sexualising very young women

Listened to some classic rap songs that I'd listened to as a teenager in the early 2000s, by the likes of Snoop Dogg, Ludacris etc.
Realised there were lyrics that I hadn't picked up on before that are for want of a better word, noncey.
One of the songs by Snoop Dogg 'Beautiful' talks about 'looking like a student' .
Another one with Ludacris and Ciara talks about the woman being 'so young and fresh'.
There are more like this but AIBU to feel a bit grossed out?

YABU for thinking it's an issue solely in rap music, as demonstrated by PP.

Gosh. Never Google R. Kelly and Aaliyah your head will implode.

Erm...rightly so

neverbeenskiing · 15/12/2022 15:24

Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl / Than to be with another man / You better keep your head, little girl / Or I won't know where I am

The Beatles

Hate most modern rap.

Not much of a fan of older rap but I could at least understand it.

Now it's all ho's and asses and bitches.

…. this is a comment that if I made it would hit me how uncool I really was.

Well student to my mind is 18+, DEFINITELY 16+ so dubious but not paedophillic. Also young and fresh I'd assume to mean late teens /early 20s. So again, not "noncey".
Not justifying the music, def not my genre but you're examples seems to not support your argument

This. I cant think of any hip hop artist that condones anything under age

There is plenty of rap music out there that isn't misogynistic at all.

There is also plenty of misogyny in rock, pop and indie music, but you rarely see threads about that 🤔

Can you help me out with some more ideas of non misogynistic rap?
I absolutely love rap and my 6 yo DS is now getting into it. I’m struggling a bit with what to play him. I’m finding some Coolio, Run DMC etc feels relatively wholesome (!) 2Pac hit and miss. A lot of the stuff that I like listening to is probably not that savoury for a young child tbh.

PumpkinPooSpice · 15/12/2022 18:22

Well, the obvious option would be to stick to female rappers, but the lyrics could still be inappropriate for kids though less misogynistic.

That's an extremely small pile to pick from .

GhostBridezilla · 15/12/2022 18:26

Yeah. You’re just 20 years late to the debate 😂

VladmirsPoutine · 15/12/2022 18:32

Yabu. Some music - regardless of genre, sexualises young women and is very misogynistic but there's very good reason why people like to pick on rap, or RnB.

Digable planets - old but gold although listening to La

Femme fatal were the lyrics about what a disaster it would be to overturn roe v wade is hmm considering what happened 20 years on from that album.

Sampa the great, she's awesome love her flow and the song energy is what I listen to when I need to be told to woman up basically.

"barney artist" London rapper with jazz infused tracks, he was my find of 2022 and I can't stop listening, check out the mini album eternal

Connor price, rap that swerves into the pop zo e, he's blowing up on youtube atm as he's doing a spin the globe challenge, he spins the globe and does a collab with someone from that country, 2 worth checking out are violet where he collabs with killa from Zambia and chuck Taylor where he collabs with a female rapper from india called siri

Deesa (from doomtree) she's awesome and check out "the bullpen" song the lyrics "It's been assumed I'm soft or irrelevant
Cause I refuse to down play my intelligence
But in a room of thugs and rap veterans
Why am I the only one
Who's acting like a gentleman"

However this is very much a you, an adult list and not 6 year old list, Connor price might be safe and barney artist im pretty sure, but you'd need to double check the lyrics for swears!

Amazing, thank you for these, I’ll have a good listen once kids in bed tonight!

re female rappers - yes - some I really like but a lot of the lyrics aren’t without their own concerns for a 6yo!

HRTQueen · 15/12/2022 18:59

Many many men are sexually attracted to very young women and want to sexually dominate them

it’s something we don’t like to acknowledge

its played out in all popular music

purpledalmation · 15/12/2022 20:25

Saw a documentary about R Kelly and it was sickening. So sad that young men think this disrespect is ok.

Yeah. It's not just rap — in fact 90s and 00s rap is positively restrained compared with what used to go on with white blokes in the 1960s.

How about Young Girl by Gary Puckett?

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

With all the charms of a woman
You've kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe
You're old enough

What a lovely sentiment. Not.

The whole point about this song is his rejection of a girl who 'kept the secret ' of her youth because he recognises the attraction would be 'way out of line'.

The hippies thought Gary was a boring old straight no doubt.

The Police.

Don't stand so close to me

🤢

That is a song literally highlighting the problem. It wasn't encouraging it!

JoanThursday1972 · 01/04/2023 10:16

As well as this, lyrics that promote women as desperate were around decades ago. Hurt So Good, Woman in Love (3 degrees) and Dub Be Good To Me are awful at presenting women with no boundaries.
