To think a crowd of people all wearing black coats is depressing and dreary?

School Christmas concert this morning. Kids all in cheery Christmas jumpers. Parents looked like a funeral.
Why, nowadays does almost everyone wear black winter coats? It’s dreary enough in the dark days of winter, there’s no law against having a bit of colour.
In the row of 23 adults in front of me, I counted one cream / light beige coat, one brown, one emerald green, one dark khaki - and the rest all black, maybe with the odd dark navy among them. No cheery coloured scarves or anything like that.
Anyone else agree that it makes winter more depressing when commuters or even Christmas shopping crowds are wall to wall black (with occasional navy/dark grey if you’re lucky) and wish colourful coats were fashionable again?
Yes, I know, first world problems, bigger things to worry about etc…

I wear black because it goes with everything 🤷🏽‍♀️

I love this quote:

superdupernova · 12/12/2022 14:13

Mine is beige because it hides the cat fur. I used to always have a green coat before that.

GimmeSleep · 12/12/2022 14:13

So I don't have to have several coats to match whatever I'm wearing 👀

museumum · 12/12/2022 14:14

Coats are very difficult to clean. Light colours end up looking grubby.

FACupcake · 12/12/2022 14:14

I wear black until I find something darker. It's just what I like. 😊

OwlingAround · 12/12/2022 14:14

I like black!

I have coats of other colours but I get the most wear out of my black ones.

Unless very expensive, well cut etc I always think brightly coloured coats look cheap and a bit childrens presenter-ish.

Deadlysinner · 12/12/2022 14:14

I bought a yellow coat from White Stuff and I absolutely love it! It took me forever to find a coat that wasn't black though!

Wardrobemalfunction22 · 12/12/2022 14:17

I like black. It suits my skin tone, and often my mood! I wear it week in week out regardless of season. It doesn't get dirty and noone ever comments on it. I like to blend in.

Mountainpika · 12/12/2022 14:19

Agree with OP. I would never have a black coat. I have very few black items of clothing. When there are so many wonderful colours to choose from, why wear dreary black?

PurpleParrotfish · 12/12/2022 14:19

Yay for a yellow coat!

I don’t see why a coat matching what you’re wearing.is a big deal to be honest. Usually what’s sticking out of the bottom of my winter coat is either blue jeans or black tights and boots.

Fair enough to avoid very light colours because of dirt but that still leaves red, blue, dark green, russet, purple, mid-gray…

To be honest I expect some of the parents might find a funeral a more enlightening experience.

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/12/2022 14:21

Both my winter coats are navy. Good winter coats cost a fair bit of money, so I tend to be more conservative in terms of style and colour so they can last for several years, wear well and go with most things.

HimalayaSalts · 12/12/2022 14:22

I have a pink coat and I love it

YouScumbagYouMaggotHeresKevinTheCarrot · 12/12/2022 14:22

I think it's a valid point that in a country where it is dark for much of the year, black coats are very much the default.
However, I can see why it happens to a certain extent. People don't want numerous coats because of cost and storage, so neutral colours make sense. Cream and white get dirty. Ditto beige and biscuit. That leaves tan, grey and navy and black (and possibly brown but I think that brown can be quite clashy).
The there's the fact that 'fashion' drives colours to be out of fashion. Mustard yellow, Coral pink etc will be current one year and totally out the next, so if you don't want to be wasteful and buy lots of colours you are best off going for a classic like black.
So the demand will be for those colours hence most coats are made in those colours.
I was quite keen on getting a tan or mustard one recently but had to settle for a darker colour because of my budget and what was available.

gamerchick · 12/12/2022 14:22

Was it a boring play then if you resorted to counting coat colours?

Who give a toss what colour their coat is. It's a coat, it has a job to do.

TiAmoTiAmo · 12/12/2022 14:23

Yes I was in a shopping centre this weekend and briefly lost my companion through the crowds. It was difficult to find them because everyone else is dressed in black puffer coats.

I find blue jeans depressing and dreary.

How was the play?

MoonahSton · 12/12/2022 14:25

I used to have a red and white hounds tooth patterned coat years ago. I loved it until a few people (at different times) said it looked like I was wearing a dressing gown. 🙁
I felt stupid wearing it after that so I sent it to the charity shop.

Fluffygreenslippers · 12/12/2022 14:25

I have a few winter coats in rotation. A forest green teddy, a black crombi coat and a grey faux fur coat. I think you would like my hat, it’s pink with eyes.

JamSandle · 12/12/2022 14:26

I wear black coz I always make a mess and black hides it whereas colours don't.

And very true

User3758965 · 12/12/2022 14:27

I never wear black, I have a mustard colour coat and an orange one

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 12/12/2022 14:28

Goes with everything, doesn't show dirt, I like black etc etc.
Who are you OP, the clothing police?!

LubaLuca · 12/12/2022 14:28

Black is serviceable, so if you have one winter coat it's better to buy in a colour you can wear with most things. I don't wear black for the reasons you give op, but that's just my personal feelings about it - I am 100% for other people doing the sensible thing and wearing it.
