We’re about to start watching Band of Brothers. For some unknown reason this has become a yearly tradition at this time of year.

Although it is a fantastic series (still ranks #4 in the top 250 tv shows on IMDb despite being over 20 years old) it’s not exactly a cheery programme.

does anyone else have any weird traditions for this time of year to make me feel a bit less weird?

We watch Monty Python Life of Brian on Christmas Eve.

NoMoreShit · 11/12/2022 21:17

I drink half a bottle of Pernod & break my glasses on Boxing Days.

Luana1 · 11/12/2022 21:18

We have a lord of the rings film marathon every Christmas Eve :)

buddhasbelly · 11/12/2022 21:38

@NoMoreShit yes this is a good level of weirdness.

the Dog is currently eating the tree so we haven’t actually pressed play yet.

these are good watch traditions

We watch the Fortunes of War (1987 series set during WW2). About as cheery as Band of Brothers 😁

Pahaha!

We've had film festivals- but it hasn't stuck now they have less time at home.

We used to take turns to pick films- our favourites, things we thought the others wouldn't have watched. Introduced us to films from different generations.

Key thing being we committed to watching them at least to halfway before giving up!

ApplePippa · 12/12/2022 08:08

We have a film marathon on New Years Eve. We pick a series, and aim to finish the last film just before midnight. Last year was Lord of the Rings, this year will be Indiana Jones.

toddlepod · 12/12/2022 08:23

We watch 'The Shining' Christmas eve.

Workinghardeveryday · 12/12/2022 08:27

We all have mcds for lunch Xmas Eve, then go for a long dog walk, come home and watch Home Alone, peel veg, small tea and bath time.

I have a feeling it will be a bit different this year as they know Santa isn’t real ☹️. We told them in summer, I couldn’t have them starting high school still believing.

gogohmm · 12/12/2022 08:34

The cat and dog take turns to vomit on the duvet on Christmas EveGrin

warofthemonstertrucks · 12/12/2022 08:38

Well for the last three years I'm a row I've managed to break or fracture a bone in the run up to Christmas. Last years was especially spectacular. Really hoping to avoid that this year!

AuntieMarys · 12/12/2022 08:40

We always watch horror films at Xmas...hate Xmas films.

YouFilthyAnimal · 12/12/2022 08:46

Not film or tv related but jam tarts are our weird thing
I only ever buy them during December, it started when my eldest was very young and it was the alternative to a mince pie, now most of the DC actually like mince pies including the youngest ones but jam tarts are tradition and it isn’t Xmas without them 🙂

Sartre · 12/12/2022 08:49

We go to a nativity/Carol singing thing at a village about an hour’s drive away despite being raging Atheists and my older DC really hate going but we still go because it’s tradition and DH love embarrassing them by singing very loudly. No idea why we do it, we just always have done. We take them to the old school sweet shop afterwards to make up for the humiliation.

Our strange traditional is going to a space themed crazy golf place on Christmas Eve.

Glumblebee · 12/12/2022 09:10

LOTR marathon here too, some point in December. And Les Miserables 😂
I need something to cheer me up between Christmas and New year though as I find that week so depressing for some reason, so following here for inspiration 🙂

Mybumlooksbig · 12/12/2022 09:55

I buy the horrible frozen cocktail sausage rolls every Xmas... cook them all up and eat the greasy, gristly little things... can't stomach them any other time of year

Please keep yourself in a darkened room for the next couple of weeks @warofthemonstertrucks Actually a light on would probably mean less chance of a break. Keep yourself in a room with a light on please!

Where does such a thing exist?! Just regular crazy golf here.

we’re at episode 3 of band of brothers. It is without a doubt my favourite tv miniseries ever made.

It is in Newcastle (called Mr Mulligans) but I think there are venues across the country (but not all are space themed).

We ended up there one year when the DC were getting a bit big for soft play and the weather was terrible for a playground or farm, and the dc really loved it, so now we go every year!

Ponoka7 · 12/12/2022 12:22

Me and my youngest DD (25), who lives with me, but I don't see a lot of because of working hours/socialising have a buffet, drink and want to chat on Christmas Eve when she gets in from work, so we have something like a death wish (Charles Bronson) marathon, on in the background. We always find a 70/80's Christmas themed horror film to watch on another buffet night during the Christmas/NY period.

Tootsweets84 · 12/12/2022 16:15

We receive a present each from Dr Who (instead of FC) wrapped in tin foil

ShaunaTheSheep · 12/12/2022 22:50

Ha! We receive a gift from Sheldon Cooper. Reason is lost in the mist of time.

HintofVintagePink · 12/12/2022 22:54

We hide a garden gnome in the house for reasons I haven’t got the energy to explain.

We watch Sherlock with a port on Boxing Day.
