To wonder whats with all the ‘can you see a line?’ threads on chat?

MN have specific topics that makes a lot of sense and keeps the site feeling organised. So what’s with all the people posting photos of their pregnancy tests on general pages like chat asking if people can see a line ? 🤨

Why not post on pregnancy, or conception?…

Not everyone browsing the chat board wants to look at a photo of a stick you have pissed on and if you can’t see a line then I can’t see it either and there is no line , give it a few more days or a week and try again 🤦‍♀️

might also be triggering for mumsnetters who are experiencing infertility. Who would normally avoid the pregnancy/conception board and thinking that the general chat page would be a safe place to browse.

I have also seen lots of threads on there about breastfeeding… Would you not get better advice on the pregnancy or parenting topics? Would that not be a more appropriate board to post your thread on?

rant over

p.s I’m PMSing if you can’t tell😤

What I can't understand is all the posts with photos of negative pregnancy tests and everyone replies 'yes I can see a line, congratulations' when the OP's period isn't even late and there is no indication that pregnancy would be a happy outcome for them.

Just loads of posts getting excited about the non existent line. Then the OP has a normal period a few days later and thinks she's had an early miscarriage, or she spends the next few days panicking about being pregnant when she isn't.

Mamai90 · 06/12/2022 06:53

There's been lots of times I've seen lines when others can't. I assume it's down to the quality of your phone, I'd never tell someone I could see a line when i can't and after experiencing 8 years of infertility myself I would never give someone false hope. I'm doubtful that many others would, but possibly I'm wrong.

To answer the OPs question, people post in AIBU for all manner of things, any subject. It's because it has the most traffic, most likely their post won't get many/any replies on another thread.

fedup0987 · 06/12/2022 06:54

Agree with this - there is never a like. Also if you're not sure just wait a week!!

And posting in aibu when they're asking a question not totally related to aibu

Skinnermarink · 06/12/2022 06:56

a lot of those ‘am I going mad, is there a line?’ Threads are pretty whack and always have been but at least they were confined to specific pages. The amount of posters falling over themselves saying ‘I see it!!’ at an obviously negative pregnancy test that’s been spun through some of sort of filter to try and make something show up is just sad.

If you can see the line without using a filter or asking confirmation from a bunch of randoms, you’re either too early or you’re not pregnant. Some of these posts the women are 5DPO for Christ sake.

Skinnermarink · 06/12/2022 06:56

*if you can’t see a line

ofwarren · 06/12/2022 06:57

A stick you have pissed on 🤣
I don't mind them in the right place but yeah, annoying in chat.

knittingaddict · 06/12/2022 07:24

There was one of those the other day. 5 posts of people saying they could see a faint line. I zoomed in, zoomed out and couldn't see a hint of a line. What are these people seeing? Also, if it's not visible in real life how can it be more visible to people online? They always confuse me because 9 times out of 10 there's no line or there's an obvious line.

Basically I agree with you op.

Skinnermarink · 06/12/2022 07:26

Taking the tests apart as well, one of those has just popped up.

There might not be any traffic on the ‘can I see a line’ boards/ conception boards because people aren’t actually interested in looking at photos of pissed on pregnancy tests. (Perhaps the piss troll might tho!)

On another note, yes lots of posters seeing imaginary lines and giving false hope which is cruel. I might get my husband to piss on a test stick and see if any mumsnetters can see a line… Perhaps DH might be expecting too🫃

I literally can never see the line

It’s because there is no line! There’s never a line… if there was a line they wouldn’t need to ask because they would see it themselves 🙄

These threads are just so annoying. I wish mumsnetters would keep their pissy pregnancy tests to themselves.

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 06/12/2022 18:57

Because Facebook isn't so popular anymore Grin

The mum groups on there used to be terrible for these sort of posts.
If you have to ask someone else if there's a line 9 times out of 10 (the 1 being blatantly obvious!) there is no line.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 06/12/2022 20:04

Nearly every single time, there is no line.
I find myself wondering about my eyesight as most people jump up with 'congratulations!'

There's no feckin' line , at all!

And don't get me started with the nub theory posts!

Sparklingbrook · 06/12/2022 20:07

I can never see a line either. And everyone’s all ‘my invisible line is now sitting next to me’ or something.
Hide the thread without opening it is best.

OMG How do you hide a thread? Please teach me … What magic is this??? 😁

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 06/12/2022 21:53

The three dots on the right hand side. Click and there’s option to hide or watch. Press hide and the thread disappears from your Active list.

SaladBarNanny · 06/12/2022 22:27

I can often see lines. Must have a good phone Grin But over the years life has taught me how utterly pointless the question is.

Early positives followed by early loss is sad but oh so common. Faint line past the date of your expected period is very unlikely to be good news, unless you're really not sure of your cycle. I understand people's excitement but can't share it anymore.

Would be nice if people always used the fertility/conception boards for the "line eyes" threads. But ultimately I'm too old, wrong generation, to feel "triggered" by anything, so happy to scroll on past the Chat posts that belong elsewhere.

AnneLovesGilbert · 06/12/2022 22:32

Can I ask what people mean by an “evap”? People say that all the time, often when it’s very clear there actually IS a line. I’ve peed on hundreds of sticks then checked them at whatever interval later it tells you to and binned them. Is it when people check back much later?

7Worfs · 06/12/2022 22:40

What’s the deal with all the obsessive testing?
It’s not like taking more tests makes it more likely to be pregnant…
I always thought you wait for your period to be a week late, then take a test.

Maybe 30years ago you waited until a week after your expected period Hmm

Modern tests confirm conception very early. When you're trying to conceive, the urge to know whether it's been successful can be overwhelming.

I don’t see the dots😢… I’m using mumsnet on my phone if that makes a difference?

Even so it still takes time for the pregnancy hormone to reach detectable levels… and I still don’t want to see pissed on pregnancy tests on the chat or Aibu boards … keep that shit to yourselves please 🙄

YEAH THIS! Absolutely does my head in it does. I see one of these bloody threads several times a month, and there is NEVER a second line. EVER. I said on one of these threads a couple of days ago that there is NO SECOND LINE, and I got yelled at by almost every poster on that thread, got told I 'needed to go to Specsavers' and that I am an idiot.

I bailed on the thread after a couple of posts as it was so pathetic. Dozens of 'aww hun congratulations' and 'I SEE A LINE WOO HOO!' type of posts. Utterly farcical. THERE WAS NO SECOND LINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Confused

And it has fuck-all to do with the quality of my phone LMFAO!!! I never come onto mumsnet on my phone. Always on my laptop with a 20" screen! And there is STILL NO LINE!!!!!!!!! And my eyesight is perfect thank you. It's the ones 'seeing a line' that isn't there! that have shitty phones and who need to go to Specsavers!

And as you say @Gingerangel it's quite insensitive and thoughtless as there may be people trying to conceive or someone who has just suffered a miscarriage. They may want to avoid the pregnancy/TTC type threads, so they avoid those boards, but then see the bloody 'I see a line' threads all over Chat and AIBU! Just wrong.

Judgyjudgy · 07/12/2022 02:40

I don't get the point of them. Just do another test tomorrow go to the doctor. You can't tell in a picture anyway! Hmm

eurochick · 07/12/2022 06:32

I'm not a fan of the threads but nine times out of ten I do see a line. Even a very faint line means the pregnancy hormone is present.
