To wonder whats with all the ‘can you see a line?’ threads on chat?

MN have specific topics that makes a lot of sense and keeps the site feeling organised. So what’s with all the people posting photos of their pregnancy tests on general pages like chat asking if people can see a line ? 🤨

Why not post on pregnancy, or conception?…

Not everyone browsing the chat board wants to look at a photo of a stick you have pissed on and if you can’t see a line then I can’t see it either and there is no line , give it a few more days or a week and try again 🤦‍♀️

might also be triggering for mumsnetters who are experiencing infertility. Who would normally avoid the pregnancy/conception board and thinking that the general chat page would be a safe place to browse.

I have also seen lots of threads on there about breastfeeding… Would you not get better advice on the pregnancy or parenting topics? Would that not be a more appropriate board to post your thread on?

rant over

p.s I’m PMSing if you can’t tell😤

A ‘Can you see a line’ topic would be great, but I don’t think anyone would use it.

CharityShopChic · 07/12/2022 07:58

It;s not just pregnancy tests. It's covid tests too.

TiAmoTiAmo · 07/12/2022 07:58

I hid certain boards because I REALLY don't want to come across threads on them and it annoys me when people post outside of the topics for the sake of more responses.

I don't understand how if strangers with varying eye sight strengths looking at a photo in not great lighting on their screens with their own lighting and brightness levels can see your 'ghost line' and yet you there in the flesh cannot tell if there is a line or not. How bad is your eye sight?!

Yes there was a point when you didn’t know which one it would be until you opened the thread. Grin

YEAH THIS! Absolutely does my head in it does. I see one of these bloody threads several times a month, and there is NEVER a second line. EVER. I said on one of these threads a couple of days ago that there is NO SECOND LINE, and I got yelled at by almost every poster on that thread, got told I 'needed to go to Specsavers' and that I am an idiot.

I bailed on the thread after a couple of posts as it was so pathetic. Dozens of 'aww hun congratulations' and 'I SEE A LINE WOO HOO!' type of posts. Utterly farcical. THERE WAS NO SECOND LINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Confused

And it has fuck-all to do with the quality of my phone LMFAO!!! I never come onto mumsnet on my phone. Always on my laptop with a 20" screen! And there is STILL NO LINE!!!!!!!!! And my eyesight is perfect thank you. It's the ones 'seeing a line' that isn't there! that have shitty phones and who need to go to Specsavers!

And as you say @Gingerangel it's quite insensitive and thoughtless as there may be people trying to conceive or someone who has just suffered a miscarriage. They may want to avoid the pregnancy/TTC type threads, so they avoid those boards, but then see the bloody 'I see a line' threads all over Chat and AIBU! Just wrong.

There was a line on that one.

Very faint, but it was there, confirmed by a now very obvious line. I can rarely see these lines either, but I could see that one.

Sparklingbrook · 07/12/2022 07:19

The other ones are the 'could I be pregnant' ones where there hasn't even been a test yet. With a description of events so far.

And for some reason there is absolutely no way a test can be purchased until a week on Friday or something.

Ha this is so true! An exhaustive list of ‘symptoms’ but they haven’t tested and can’t get a test until next week.

Or ‘my periods 3 days late and I’m testing negative’. Replies of ‘ring the GP and demand a blood test’. Rather than just, maybe, wait. Because of course GPs have nothing better to do and endless resources.

knittingaddict · 07/12/2022 08:47

I agree with Sparklingbrook. Like most women on here I know what a pregnancy result looks like. I can rarely, if ever see a line. There's nothing wrong with my eyesight.

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 07/12/2022 09:01

@gaf Yeap, especially as if your period is actually MIA, a GP won't see you for 3mo!

SaladBarNanny · 07/12/2022 10:26

Even so it still takes time for the pregnancy hormone to reach detectable levels… and I still don’t want to see pissed on pregnancy tests on the chat or Aibu boards … keep that shit to yourselves please🙄

Oh I agree that it's better to keep it on a specific board. Or just not share at all Grin

I was just answering the question about why people test so early these days. Because they can! Pregnancy hormone levels are detectable really early these days, within a week or so of conception. There are lots of reasons why a woman might prefer to know as early as possible, for instance it can be useful to know if you're having recurrent very early miscarriages.

Gingerangel · 07/12/2022 17:44

Happylittlethoughts · 07/12/2022 07:15

I can never see them either. I also wonder why they don't use the test with the words
Pregnant/ Not Pregnant???
No more peering for lines.

Because that would be too much of a good idea 🤦‍♀️

Yeah I actually think it’s quite a selfish thing to do, they are posting on chat or AIBU boards for more responses. Not thinking about the mumsnetters who are struggling with infertility or miscarriage who will be deliberately avoiding the conception/pregnancy boards. They really don’t want to come across these ‘do I see a line’ threads. It’s just incredibly insensitive.

Post your pregnancy tests in the appropriate place!

Totally, op. Glad you brought it up this was my sentiment, too whenever I unfortunately opened one of them.

TiAmoTiAmo · 08/12/2022 10:27

They lure you in with misleading or deliberately obscure titles as well ... ughhh so selfish and thoughtless.

massivecringe · 08/12/2022 10:41

This is really quite a mean thread. I get your point op I do, but I think people on here have been quite bitchy about it. These women are desperate. I was one of them. Sometimes no there isn't a line, but sometimes there is and you just want some confirmation you're not actually seeing things and others can see it too. It's hard to believe when you've struggled so much

PurpleButterflyWings · 08/12/2022 10:41

@PAFMO

People have been moaning about the "line" threads for as long as I've been here (my "line" is now at university.)

I can't believe somebody actually put this. 'my LINE is now at university!' 😂 ALWAYS on these type of threads, at LEAST half a dozen people say that. Bet you thought you were so clever and original saying that! Wink

Also, your LINE may have been a baby, but it would have been a VISIBLE LINE!!! Not one that wasn't there, like people put on here!!!

@PAFMO

Presumably lots of thread titles could be "triggering" so here's the thing. How about you don't open them and move on?

What an ignorant comment. (Bet you thought you were clever and original saying THAT as well.) Wink As several posters have stated, sometimes it's not indicated in the thread title that it's an 'am I pregnant' thread?! Also, even if it DID indicate it, WTF is it doing on AIBU or CHAT? Hmm Go and stick it on pregnancy board where these threads belong! No-one wants to see them here.

PurpleButterflyWings · 08/12/2022 10:43

Not a mean thread, and people HAVEN'T been 'bitchy' Hmm But nevertheless, PUT IT ON THE PREGNANCY/CONCEPTION BOARDS. Why put it here FFS, where people DON'T WANT TO SEE IT. Surely putting it on the boards it BELONGS on makes more sense?!!!

massivecringe · 08/12/2022 10:56

@PurpleButterflyWings why is it any different to people posting in aibu for 'traffic' though ? As someone else has said, it's clear from the title what it's going to be, don't open it... it's pretty simple.

I don't understand the issue myself but we're all different

Have you not read ANY posts on here? It's jarring and upsetting for people TTC and who have suffered a loss/miscarriage. There is a specific board for pregnancy tests and suchlike. The PREGNANCY boards!!! Put them there. Apart from not belonging on AIBU and CHAT, they are super annoying because they're always negative pregnancy tests!!! Hmm

soundsofthesixties · 08/12/2022 11:20

I'm so old we had to wait until we'd missed 3 periods before we went to see a GP about being pregnant. I don't think it's particularly a good idea to check after being a couple of days late, could be a number of reasons why your period hasn't arrived bang on the day.

massivecringe · 08/12/2022 11:20

@PurpleButterflyWings the main thing I took from the replies was that it's more annoying than triggering ! I have been that person who has suffered loss and infertility so I don't need telling it is triggering. But most of the replies were 'there is NEVER a line' etc, and that, is just coming across as bitchy.

xogossipgirlxo · 08/12/2022 12:05

I don't blame these women asking if someone else sees the line. Sometimes they're desperate, and trying for a baby for ages is very lonely experience. But yeah, forum can be a mess.

Peoniesandcream · 08/12/2022 12:33

I agree with the notion of just not opening the thread if it's in the title. If you get that triggered over certain threads/ topics, what happens when you're out shopping or whatever and see babies/ children?

SarahShorty · 01/08/2023 17:52

@Peoniesandcream we keep it all locked in until we're alone and can sulk in private.

Alwaystired2023 · 01/08/2023 18:07

Maybe if these types of threads annoy you just don't click on them and don't read through?

You may, or may not, know that it can be quite stressful trying for a baby. Maybe some of these posters find comfort in the responses of other people, and genuinely would like their opinions.
