To ask if old school friends would recognise you now?

Someone from secondary school is trying to organise a 30 year reunion so lots of people being tagged in to a Facebook post. I recognise some names so do the normal (nosey) Facebook thing of checking everyone out and only about half are visually recognisable as older versions of their teen selves. I’ve barely changed so I think most would recognise me.

YABU I look nothing like I did at school
YANBU I’m a (slightly) older version

A man walking out of a busy supermarket shouted to me -“hiya clam!” - as I was going in yesterday. It was too crowded to stop and talk but it was the lad I set next to in 1988 at school when I was 17.
I’m now 52!

mast0650 · 01/12/2022 18:53

I think people would probably recognize me. I'm 51 now and 8 years ago I happened to recognize a school teacher on the train. I hadn't seen him since I was 18 so I wasn't 100% sure it was him but eventually asked if he used to teach at X school. He immediately replied "Jane Smith!!!". Except with my actual name, obviously. I think voice and mannerisms often change less than pure appearance though.

Keyansier · 01/12/2022 20:08

I haven't facially aged at all since school, I look exactly the same! So I would say for me, yes, definitely.

Chittering · 01/12/2022 20:18

In my 50s and living two hours away from where I grew up. I recently recognized and got talking to an old school friend because she looks just like her mum used to.

thistimelastweek · 01/12/2022 20:23

I very much doubt if people would recognise me without a bit of reminding

It's not so much I've worn badly but I'm a completely different shape and my hair has darkened a lot.

VioletCharlotte · 01/12/2022 20:27

Yes, I don't look that different. I'm friends with the majority of people I went to school with on Facebook, most of them haven't changed that much. When I see people from school when out and about, I always recognise them and vice versa. I left school in 1992.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 01/12/2022 20:28

I wash my hair now so I’m it sure my old school peers would recognise me 😂

KaleToChristmas · 01/12/2022 20:32

I would be recognised but I have red hair so it's easier.

Ericaequites · 01/12/2022 20:35

I’m three stone heavier and much more florid, but my looks haven’t changed much. I look just like my mother now, minus three to five stone and straighter hair. It occasionally shocks me when I look in a mirror.

ivykaty44 · 01/12/2022 20:35

it was a few years ago now my dd2 was queuing up in a busy coffee shop and a lady I went to school came over - she said

I knew you were in here when I saw that girl at the counter - she is the spit of you at that age. Indeed it was my dd2 she had spotted and she did look like me at that age.

So it wasn't me she recognised but my dd2

AuntieEntity · 01/12/2022 20:36

I haven't lived in my home town for 20 years and when I visited a few months ago with my DD a bloke I went to school with said "Hi Entity!" as I was crossing the road. Probably haven't seen him for 30 years. I feel like I've changed completely since then, but evidently my school friends would disagree.

Zanatdy · 01/12/2022 20:38

Yeah I don’t look hugely different, neither do many of my school friends. I’m friends with at least 80 from my old year of 130 on FB so no surprising reunion as we are all in touch on there anyway, which I love. Until FB I often wondered what had become of people. I was glad people did the same as I was very proud of my career / salary given I was the teenage mum of the year!!

Yarrawonga · 01/12/2022 20:55

I was a slightly podgy nerd at school. Now I’m not.

I attended pre-marriage classes in my home town. There was a girl from my class at school doing the course too. I recognised her but she didn’t recognise me.

olympicsrock · 01/12/2022 21:00

On holiday abroad recently , I bumped into a girl who was in my class when we were 12 , hadn’t see her since then. We are now 44 - both recognised each Other and knew first name and surname from school days.

What are pre-marriage classes?

Blendandmix · 01/12/2022 21:08

I look nothing like I did in school. I'd LOVE a reunion

Blendandmix · 01/12/2022 21:10

In school i was hugely overweight, had big ears and crooked teeth and zero confidence.

I'm now a size 8, had my ears pinned back and braces and have quite alot of confidence now 😂

BackToWhereItAllBegan · 01/12/2022 21:14

I think I look pretty much the same even 30 years later. Even my hairstyle is virtually the same just slightly more flattering with better highlights!

CitronVert22 · 01/12/2022 21:24

I'd say I look pretty similar, but my school friend's mum failed to recognise me at her wedding a few years ago! I was round theirs semi regularly.

BogRollBOGOF · 01/12/2022 21:36

After 10+ years I was recognised in the pub by a classmate... 50 miles from where we went to school.

I recently met up with several classmates after 20+ years and it's surprising how many of us looked very similar. Sadly it was for a funeral.

Monmouthy · 10/12/2022 20:00

I don’t think anyone would recognise me. I could think of nothing worse than meeting up with people from school 30 years later. Bullying fuckers.

Sugaspunsista · 10/12/2022 20:06

I look the same. Went to s reunion and everyone knew me straight away... it was a bit embarrassing as I didn't recognise a few of them

XenoBitch · 10/12/2022 20:11

I have some on my FB, and they just look like older versions of what I remember in school.
I did meet up with on a few years back. He looked the same (albeit older)... I was a fat mess.

Cleopatra67 · 10/12/2022 20:16

I went to a Reina few years ago and it was fascinating. Some people were totally unrecognisable and others hadn’t changed much. I’m 55 and instantly recognisable still.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 10/12/2022 20:21

Yes I have one of those faces that even though I look older looks the same, iyswim. You can recognise me from baby photos
