To ask if old school friends would recognise you now?

Someone from secondary school is trying to organise a 30 year reunion so lots of people being tagged in to a Facebook post. I recognise some names so do the normal (nosey) Facebook thing of checking everyone out and only about half are visually recognisable as older versions of their teen selves. I’ve barely changed so I think most would recognise me.

YABU I look nothing like I did at school
YANBU I’m a (slightly) older version

I’ve always looked old so everyone recognises me even though I barely knew them growing up. It’s a strange compliment when they say you haven’t changed.

RandomMess · 10/12/2022 20:41

I am distinctive so yep they would all recognise me. Alas I am rubbish at facial recognition and would struggle with the woman let alone the men.

OneDetectorist · 10/12/2022 20:43

No I wouldn't be recognised.

Weight loss, exercise, braces, contact lenses - I genuinely look like a different person.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/12/2022 20:46

I look similar

However I only recognise about 3 people - the rest all look ancient

Having said that, the 3 I recognise I've seen them animated - the other 100 I've only seen in pictures so that's probably why

The prettiest girl at school (completely stunningly beautiful) looks nothing like she used to - not bad or ugly or overweight (I promise not being cruel) but literally like a different person

An old classmate recognised me on the bus the other day, 25 years after I last saw her. I didn’t know who she was and she had to tell me her name and our class teacher. She had changed beyond all recognition.

Another old classmate who wore very thick glasses and would have been considered fairly plain went on to become a model. I saw her in a glossy magazine and recognised her face straightaway.

I work in a hospital, last year a woman insisted that I went in front of her in the queue at the cafe, and then started chatting to me about school. She remembered my name and said we were in the same year, but I had absolutely no clue who she was.

I went to a wedding in my hometown ten years ago and the taxi driver was an old friend from primary school and he had grown into this ridiculously hot guy! I was also considerably more attractive than I had been at school and we were both sort of gawping at each other - I had to introduce my boyfriend to him with a bit of a stutter Xmas Blush

I think I've aged better than most of my school friends but maybe everyone thinks that. I'd welcome a reunion!

pizzaHeart · 10/12/2022 20:56

I hope yes, but not sure, I haven’t been in touch with anyone and moved away almost 30 years ago. I’ve met people occasionally over the years when visiting parents but it’s always me who recognised them first, maybe I was just looking around more.
I think that I look about the same, just older, I wear glasses and have similar hair cut.

DahliaMacNamara · 10/12/2022 20:59

It's always the ones you haven't kept up with that look older. The ones you've aged alongside look as young as you do yourself. If not always the same shape as before.

illiterato · 10/12/2022 20:59

Yep- I’d say I’m recognisable. I just don’t look that different. Roughly the same weight, same hair colour and length. Wear contacts now but didn’t wear glasses at school. Most of my friends also recognisable. There are some people who do literally look like a different person though. Mainly because either really different hair or massive weight loss/ gain.

littlepeas · 10/12/2022 21:06

I'm not as shiny, but I think I would be very recognisable. This thread has made me realise how little I have changed in 25 years - how boring!

maddiemookins16mum · 10/12/2022 21:08

I’m a 5 stone heavier version of my 15 year old self.

AuntieEntity · 01/12/2022 20:36

I haven't lived in my home town for 20 years and when I visited a few months ago with my DD a bloke I went to school with said "Hi Entity!" as I was crossing the road. Probably haven't seen him for 30 years. I feel like I've changed completely since then, but evidently my school friends would disagree.

This happened to me too, @AuntieEntity. I’m rarely in my home town now as my parents moved away ages ago, but I did stop by about five years ago and someone recognized me in the high street! I recognized her as well, after 25+ years!

mackthepony · 10/12/2022 21:23

I'm thinner and more attractive but yeah, I guess they would

Still the same old Mack

lieselotte · 10/12/2022 21:38

Yes I showed a photo of myself when I was 20 to my son about 3 months ago and he said " gosh you look exactly the same".

I am 50. He was slightly generous as I didn't have eye bags back then Grin. It's interesting how some people change and others don't.

I'd not want to go back to a school reunion though.

lljkk · 10/12/2022 21:42

I don't think they'd remember me.

mdh2020 · 10/12/2022 21:49

I’m told I haven’t changed and, yes, I met an old school friend and she recognised me immediately.

tobee · 10/12/2022 22:29

If they remembered me at all they probably would iyswim. Although now I have glasses and quite pale and drawn lol
