Who had right of way?

I’ve uploaded a picture of the scenario. Cars 1,2 and 3. I’ve added the direction they were indicating to go. Car 1 was turning their right, car 2 was turning their right and car 3 was going straight. What order should the cars have gone in. By time car 3 got to the roundabout car 2 was approx where the 1 and 2 arrows meet. 3 stopped and gave 2 lots of abuse. Beeping, flashing and sticking fingers up. Meanwhile car 1 is patiently waiting for everyone to move so they can 🤔

Posted too soon. AIBU to think car 2 was to go first, then car 1 then 3 as they weren’t even at the roundabout yet

1 was correct to give way to 2. Whether 2 should have given way or not depends on how close 3 was to the roundabout, but if really as far away as shown, then 3 is being an idiot. If all three cars had approached at the same time then who knows, it's a stalemate 😆

SomeUnspokenThing · 30/11/2022 14:06

2 then 1 then 3. Was 3 really as far away as in the picture?

wombat1a · 30/11/2022 14:06

In theory you should give way to traffic on your right, which doesn't have to be on the roundabout at the time it can be approaching it. So on the assumption 1 & 2 where stationary and 3 was moving towards the roundabout 1 should give way to 2 and 2 should give way to 3 and at this point 3 has no one to give way too so I would put 3 as highest priority with 2 next and 1 last.

If you're in the UK then all three cars should still be sitting there now - all telling each other to go first. Unfortunately this is how many British drivers lose their lives as they all sit there forever more.

maranella · 30/11/2022 14:07

The rule is priority to the right, so car 2 has priority, followed by car 1 (who is waiting at the roundabout to go), followed by car 3, which isn't even at the roundabout yet.

wombat1a · 30/11/2022 14:08

As an addition, if I was doing 20-30 approaching the roundabout as #3 and #2 pulled out and stopped me from going through I'd be pretty ticked off with them indeed.

RudolphTheGreat · 30/11/2022 14:08

I think it's difficult to say without being there to physically judge the distance of car 3, everyone's reaction time and speeds.

It looks as though car 2 has time to go, but if they were in fact only half way round the roundabout when car 3 entered the roundabout, they possibly didn't have enough time and should have waited for car 3 to pass over first.

custardbear · 30/11/2022 14:08

Also I'd say 2 1 then 3

maranella · 30/11/2022 14:09

And let me guess, car 3 was being driven by an aggressive male.

A good old roundabout Russian roulette Grin

2,1,3

pocketvenuss · 30/11/2022 14:11

@wombat1a it would depend how far away and how fast 3 was moving. If 3 was where they appear to be in this diagram, 2 would be correct to enter the roundabout.

If 2 was at the point where arrows 1&2 meet, I can't see why 3 was even affected. Surely as 2 was in constant motion once entering the roundabout, they would be out of the way of 3.

Boomboom22 · 30/11/2022 14:11

Doesn't matter how close 3 was, give way to the right so if they got there and 2 was ready then it's 2s right of way, 2 is to the right of 3 even though it is a straight road the rules of roundabouts apply not main roads.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 30/11/2022 14:12

Whenever I ask MrB about rights of way, usually because I've been horribly cut up at some junction by an aggressive bloke, he always says:
"Which of you was driving the BMW?" 😂

WatchoRulo · 30/11/2022 14:13

There's no such thing as right of way but roundabouts operate with priority to vehicles from the right. It's hard to see how 3 had a chance to stop and hurl abuse if you were already out of their way at the point where the arrows converge.

Theunamedcat · 30/11/2022 14:15

I've been caught out by this same scenario car three nowhere near the island he sped up overtook everyone rode my bumper beeping at me screaming abuse I pulled into the police station he sped off the police said it was the fastest shat and run that week and this was the reason for their horseshoe style car park 😂 I gave it five minutes then went home fortunately I live close by

FOJN · 30/11/2022 14:16

Give way to the right but if car 2 assessed that they could clear the lane they intended to cross before car 3 reached the roundabout then I'm not sure what car 3 is getting wound up about. Car 2 did clear the lane by the sound of it so the driver of car 3 needs to stop being aggressive.

Years ago I was in car 1 turning right and car 3 drove straight into the passenger side of my car. Insurance settled in my favour.

Adultchildofelderlyparents · 30/11/2022 14:16

Difficult to judge without being there to know distances/speed, but going from this picture only I would expect the order to be
1, 3, 2

Lullabies2Paralyze · 30/11/2022 14:17

Assuming 3 is not driving 90 mph then 2 should have time to get out as 3 looks far enough away, though by the time 2 has cleared the roundabout 3 would need to be slowing down to give way to 1 (who may already have been on roundabout themselves by the time 3 gets there)

2 1 3

ErinAoife · 30/11/2022 14:19

Depend who was first at the roundabout as you always yield to traffic that's that is already on the roundabout and traffic coming from your right. You Don't enter a roundabout until it is clear from your right

chikp · 30/11/2022 14:19

3 should have slowed down as approaching the roundabout so it shouldn't have been an issue
