To think that not all 15 year olds have a North Face jacket?

DD15 is seriously nagging us about getting a North Face jacket to the tune of £300. Apparently, everyone at school has one, they're very warm, last forever etc.

I'm a bit surprised given the decidedly non-middle class demographic of her school tbh, but I have seen a lot of teens wearing them.

My first thought was that it's an insane amount of money to spend on a jacket. Her last one was from Urban Outfitters which I bought in the sale and I suppose that given that she's not going to grow very much more, I'd feel okay spending around £100 on something she really wanted.

But £300! Am I missing something here about how vital they are to a young person's life? It's quite possible that I don't really get how desirable they are.

Would like to hear from other parents of teens about how reasonable a request this is!

TIA

It's crazy how popular they have gone. I'm in a group on Facebook that sells fakes and the amount of parents buying for their kids for Xmas is unreal. The stuff looks the job and the kids are none the wise. It's all north face , monclear, balenciaga and Nike Air force.

aquashiv · 28/11/2022 23:40

A road man is a street Gee innit. Hoodie baggie joggers with pants revealing...Air force trainers and laces undone . Lots of arm crossing to cover the bollocks...an Allie G without the personality.
They listen to garage drum and base.

Christ I’ve just googled Canada Goose, as it’s been mentioned a few times. I might never recover. Does that price include a return flight to actual Canada?!
I must be in wrong business, need to become a successful roadman!!

mondaytosunday · 28/11/2022 23:41

My son got one on a trip to the States as his main Xmas present - I was most put out when I found out his (now ex) girlfriend 'borrowed it for keeps'!

Domino20 · 28/11/2022 23:41

My son ordered a fake one from China. I'm half convinced that it came from the real factory, the quality of it was so impressive. I had to take it to 3 different dry cleaners to find one that wouldn't charge me the £60 specialist cleaning fee as it looks so genuine. If you bought her one she wouldn't know herself it's fake, even comes with correct tags.

DS 14 is going on the school ski trip so he has a fully waterproof, windproof ski jacket with taped seams, snow skirt, fleece removeable lining etc. How Northface used to be before it became trendy. Cost £32 in a sale.

Rubixcubio · 28/11/2022 23:43

She should do jobs around the house to earn the money to buy one for herself, maybe you could put the first 100 and she could work towards the rest. That way she will learn the value of high priced items. Personally unless she has finished growing and she can use it for the next few winters, I feel it's too much money for a coat.

TheOrigRights · 28/11/2022 23:44

I was surprised when my 13 yo asked for one, as I always associated NF with outdoor gear. Times have changed it seems!
He hasn't gone on about it for a while - he has coats and jackets and hasn't asked for a while so maybe it's moved on round these parts (Essex).

Geppili · 28/11/2022 23:44

@milkysmum for their stash n cash.

Jyn · 28/11/2022 23:44

I bought mine from Cheshire oaks outlet some years ago, along with e tip gloves. I spent a lot of time outside at the time and it was a godsend.
it gets washed and tumble dried with tennis balls every year and is still as warm as the day I brought it home.
live just bought the matching thermoball boots for a winter trip to Paris. Ugliest things ever but incredibly warm.

notdaddycool · 28/11/2022 23:45

think I’ve got a fake in the roof, i should dig it out!

I’d be worried about the down filling in a knock off. There will always be the ethical argument over Goose down filled coats, but a Chinese knock off down coat really cannot be particularly ethical.

This thread is funny. I live in a posh village where all the teenagers are loaded and I've never seen one wearing a north face coat!

JCoverdale · 28/11/2022 23:51

The only people you see wearing NF jackets in my local town are drug dealers and male.

Cas112 · 28/11/2022 23:51

What's class got to do with this?

drkpl · 28/11/2022 23:52

I’m 25, and I admit I have coveted one for the last 2 years. I can’t even afford one for myself with me and dp working ft. I don’t know how parents do it with multiple kids. When I was 14 it was all about SuperDry coats, and they were about £80- which I thought was extortionate at the time.

I'll mention your concerns to him.

sausage767 · 28/11/2022 23:56

I'm a skier so have quite a few NF jackets. Never knew how trendy I am. I wouldn't be caught dead in one off the slopes though.
