To think that not all 15 year olds have a North Face jacket?

DD15 is seriously nagging us about getting a North Face jacket to the tune of £300. Apparently, everyone at school has one, they're very warm, last forever etc.

I'm a bit surprised given the decidedly non-middle class demographic of her school tbh, but I have seen a lot of teens wearing them.

My first thought was that it's an insane amount of money to spend on a jacket. Her last one was from Urban Outfitters which I bought in the sale and I suppose that given that she's not going to grow very much more, I'd feel okay spending around £100 on something she really wanted.

But £300! Am I missing something here about how vital they are to a young person's life? It's quite possible that I don't really get how desirable they are.

Would like to hear from other parents of teens about how reasonable a request this is!

TIA

Thank you! It's very kind of you to be doing my cyber searching.

Alas, as pps say, it's got to be this particular one and it's not in any sales.

Just tell her they're Cheugy. Might change her mind Wink

The only people you see wearing NF jackets in my local town are drug dealers and male.

Drug dealers will also be in Moncler and Canada goose and the ring leader will be in Prada coats. Nf is more of a shoplifter type coat.

Blueink · 29/11/2022 00:04

Nope (and some kid’s parents can’t afford new blazer) DD is trying to pull a fast one & being unreasonable and entitled - she must know you can’t afford it?!

Her reasoning is bs, 15 year old girls are still growing and also move on to the next fad very quickly.

crownandfillers · 29/11/2022 00:04

@JCoverdale in London at least.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 29/11/2022 00:13

I told my parents that EVERYONE had Doc Martens and Adidas tracksuits except me.

What I meant was a few loud kids had them and some people had knock offs and I was just an entitled obnoxious teenager 🤣 my mum of course told me to do one.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 29/11/2022 00:13

I also think with teens, jackets being ripped is an inevitability

LonelyBones · 29/11/2022 00:13

Ive bought 2 TNF puffer jackets for my 7year old from Vinted. They had been washed and not dried properly so the down was all bunched. The jackets were all flat and lumpy. Picked them up for the grand price of £10 each. Gave them a wash and dried them properly, so they are all nice and pouffy now. Try Vinted, you never know your luck!

Obki · 29/11/2022 00:17

I started working as soon as I got my NI number.

Given she's 15, will she ger her NI number next year and can she get a Saturday job to save for and fund the jacket?

It's a great lesson to work and save for a purpose.

Blueink · 29/11/2022 00:18

DM also not made in U.K. anymore, don’t come with the same guarantee and don’t last unfortunately

For Roadman see Top Boy sort of thing. Used to legitimately, be someone who was usually in a gang, doing crime, one would have been described - by which I mean in my 90s hip hop era, as being 'from the streets', but in UK we have roads. "Man's on the roads bruv" is how a lot of local boys would have described themselves. Trapping/drug dealing etc in NF jacket, Nike Tech & 95s, Shystie mask (aka a balaclava), joggers loose and low so you can balls your wraps. Its become a caricature though, so many people, often middle class, have copied their style, it's become a look of its own and now the only people who would be called roadmen are absolutely not legitimate gangsters or criminals, it's the ones playing at being bad.

Also its a specific style of NF coat, not the sensible anorak type things. Even the teens haven't gone that mad, yet!

NF have peaked and gone here in Hackney, do see a lot of them but they're on their way out, or so I'm told. DS had one 3-4 years ago, but there are loads of fakes about too.

Oodlesandoodles · 29/11/2022 00:22

North Face used to make good kit years ago, their stuff is shite now.

mitsy5 · 29/11/2022 00:28

There are so many different (but similar) styles of NF jackets. You could get one for £150-£200. Yes I know, still hell of an expensive. I seen a lovely brown, long length style on JD sports and near died at the price.

Batmanandbobbin · 29/11/2022 00:31

Berghaus is the new thing coming in, in my area anyway (I work in secondary and NF is dead out now 🙄).

TheSilentPicnic · 29/11/2022 00:38

I can't believe they cost so much there!! Lordy, they are about $100 here

@Shinyredbicycle
the fact your daughter wants a north face jacket doesn’t mean you haven’t done a good job as a parent.
dont let mumsnet make you feel shit.
for the record my son couldn’t give a flying fuck what he wears , the girls however that’s a whole nother story. They also think money grows on trees and that hair extensions and fake lashes are compulsory in life.
there alright kids though ;) x

echt · 29/11/2022 01:27

Just tell DD that North Face is the preferred casual garb of Daniel Andrews, the premier of Victoria. Whenever he did his daily announcements during lockdown, the wearing of North Face meant bad news, while open necked shirt and dark suit meant good. Or was it the other way round? Smile

He's a good egg, but no teen girl wants to look like a middle-aged man.

emptythelitterbox · 29/11/2022 01:37

yes the ol man jacket

Thank you. DD hasn't as yet ventured near false eye lashes and she's only been to the hairdresser's twice in her life, so this has come as a bit of a shock!

Must let DH know that is now very cool and down with the kids 😅 at state pension age just
He used to do mountaineering years ago and would have worn NF then. I bought him one for our 1st Christmas and he had it for years. Still does some hill walking. He purchased before covid 2 coats. A lightweight one and a heavier one for when really cold. Bought in Kildare village outlet outside Dublin similar to the Bicester one. God forbid that he should pay full price. Will probably be ten years before he decides to renew them.

MintChocCornetto · 28/11/2022 21:33

They're roadman wear now.

The days of TNF being a respectable outdoor brand are long gone 🤣

Very true. Once the preserve of grannies and dog walkers, now the drug dealing kids are all into them
Like Burberry once was, and then became very pedestrian.

“Balls your wraps” 😂
As any copper wouldn’t dream of looking there!
Saw a raid in Russia ( You tube) where the surgical- gloved police literally hooked heroin wraps out of people ‘s arses- it was revolting.

And poor addicts inject that stuff :(

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 28/11/2022 21:35

I have no idea what a road man is.

Is like a highway man, but modern?

No I don't think it's like highwayman. I've heard my own teen use this phrase and I think it's derogatory. It's not the same as "chav" I believe, I really can't help beyond that though. Derogatory, but not the same as chav.

LemonSwan · 29/11/2022 02:09

I am a big north face fan. Practically live in the stuff. But you have to be so careful nowadays what you buy!

Jacket above is a massive no no. Anything ‘lifestyle’ a massive no. anything non waterproof is no. Futurelight sounded super promising but sadly missed the mark as not being strong enough.

Drytex north face is still excellent technology. You can go through a rose bush backwards in that stuff daily for a decade and it’s as waterproof and breathable day 1 as day 10000. Thoroughly recommend.

Sensible people buy in end of season sales when the colour ways switch, so just before spring or just before autumn. Standard colours black sometimes don’t hit the sales as they are staples but worth a look.

LemonSwan · 29/11/2022 02:20

For example not my style, but if your daughter wants the puffer you would this one…

nearly the same but waterproof, breathable, dryvent, indestructible, has the same down, and same price.
