To think that not all 15 year olds have a North Face jacket?

DD15 is seriously nagging us about getting a North Face jacket to the tune of £300. Apparently, everyone at school has one, they're very warm, last forever etc.

I'm a bit surprised given the decidedly non-middle class demographic of her school tbh, but I have seen a lot of teens wearing them.

My first thought was that it's an insane amount of money to spend on a jacket. Her last one was from Urban Outfitters which I bought in the sale and I suppose that given that she's not going to grow very much more, I'd feel okay spending around £100 on something she really wanted.

But £300! Am I missing something here about how vital they are to a young person's life? It's quite possible that I don't really get how desirable they are.

Would like to hear from other parents of teens about how reasonable a request this is!

TIA

@Invisimamma that’s out of stock like owt else cheap

XS size is available

ILIWYS · 28/11/2022 22:21

DD15 is at a very "middle class" school and I think her coat was about £20 from New Look. Absolutely no idea what coats her friends have got.

JaceLancs · 28/11/2022 22:22

I must be getting old
coats of any kind were an absolute no no when I was at school - my DC who left school 15 ish years ago were the same
it was all about the trainers and the school bag or rucksack

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 28/11/2022 22:22

Just told DH who is bald wears glasses and is nearly 50 that he might get mistaken for a roadman if he wears his ancient north face coat.

He's off googling what a roadman is, I've explained it doesn't mean someone who mends potholes.

I'm hoping that fear of being the inspiration for the next series of OutLaws might make him finally retire the bloody coat and wear something nicer.

Scepticalwotsits · 28/11/2022 22:22

I remember when I was a student up north all the ‘charvas’ used to try and nick the Berghaus jackets.

tbh TNF used to be a good brand, as did Karrimor but since both were brought out they may as well just be any high street brand. Which is probably why they want them as they are seen as ‘fashion’ now.
The fact that JD sports sells them says itnall

im guessing www.thenorthface.co.uk/shop/en/tnf-gb/womens-1996-retro-nuptse-jacket-3xeo?variationId=LE4&ds_rl=1296071&ds_rl=1296071&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgJWIxfTR-wIVweDtCh1CsAAyEAQYASABEgJSZ_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

is where the £300 comes from but with searching just for about 20 seconds can find the same one for £160 and similar looking TNF ones for a similar price.

CornishGem1975 · 28/11/2022 22:23

Nope, mine wouldn't go near them - but then they won't go near most coats!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 28/11/2022 22:24

They seen to have 25% off at the moment if that’s any help? It does seem a hefty amount of money.

My 14 yo doesn’t have one and I don’t think she’d want one. By no means does everyone at her school have this - I thought teenagers shunned coats and warmth of any kind?

FridayNightIsWineNight · 28/11/2022 22:25

So I'm finally fashionable with my TNF gillet, jacket and coat!! I've had all 3 for years now, wear them very winter and they still look like new.
I got DS1 one a couple of years ago, but he's growing out of it now. The up side, the next one I get him (second hand) will be a mens medium - when he grows out of it, it can be donated to me......if I need another one by then!😁

Coulddowithanap · 28/11/2022 22:25

My DD also 15 doesn't wear a jacket as apparently they aren't cool. I don't understand kids!

BuddyTheElfOnAnEscalator · 28/11/2022 22:25

BogRollBOGOF · 28/11/2022 22:07

My North Face coat and I have had many adventures and misadventures together around the world over many years.

I find it bonkers that they are cool with teenagers. I do wonder what they think when an un-trendy middle-aged woman goes past in one!

Same. I’ve had my black TNF coat for 8 years - I bought it for proper mountain climbing (the type that takes a week to climb) but now it helps me survive the school run. How life has changed!

AriettyHomily · 28/11/2022 22:26

North face used to be awesome. Now round here it's only the drug dealers that would touch them and they're probably fake.

Geppili · 28/11/2022 22:26

All the roadmen where them round here.

notacooldad · 28/11/2022 22:26

Most of the teenagers that I work with got their's from Bury New Road!

OutDamnedSpot · 28/11/2022 22:27

I teach in Cumbria. Anyone wearing North Face would be laughed out of school here.

“bloody tourists…”

😂

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 28/11/2022 22:27

My DD doesn't gave a NF black puffer but every third person at her uni does so I would say they are very popular with teenagers. Could you give your DD money towards it and perhaps other relatives could give money for Christmas too.

DeeCeeCherry · 28/11/2022 22:27

North Face?

Roadman tings ennit.

Look up the 'Mans Not Hot' skit

Hellocatshome · 28/11/2022 22:28

My 15 year old doesnt. He has a £300 Stone Island jacket instead bought with his first ever wages from working all summer. Absolute waste of money but if you can't waste it when you are 15 when can you.

Outofnowhere · 28/11/2022 22:28

I bought a gilet version of the north face jacket for teenage dc last Christmas. She asked me to take it back and give her the cash instead. Now she’s changed her mind and wants one this Christmas after all! I’ve told her she’s having a laugh.

Yes, that's where the £300 came from.

I couldn't find anything cheaper from a proper site. I wouldn't mind a fake but she would.

DD and her mates tend to buy their coats from new look, Shein, Pretty little thing etc. Think dds was about £30 for an over sized puffs with a hood.
They wouldn't wear north face as said they are what 'road men' wear.

Okwotnow · 28/11/2022 22:31

My daughter has one it was about £200 but she has worn it day in day out over 2 winters so has got her money’s worth and it’s still going strong. Makes the price seem ok if you can afford it. She had hers as her main Xmas present 2 years ago.

chineapplepunks · 28/11/2022 22:32

I live opposite a secondary school and to be fair to your DD I see LOADS of the north face coats walking past my kitchen window! I cannot imagine paying £300 for one though!

lljkk · 28/11/2022 22:35

DS is nearly 15 & would find the idea of a jacket that costs that much - absurd.

Flubbler · 28/11/2022 22:35

No idea what a roadman is 😂but round here these jackets are the uniform for shoplifters and trouble causers. As a retail worker 90% of the kids that are stealing and abusive are kitted out in a north face jacket and a JD string bag.

Lapland123 · 28/11/2022 22:36

I must be miles behind the times… I had no idea you could even find a teenager’s coat costing that amount!!!
