To think that not all 15 year olds have a North Face jacket?

DD15 is seriously nagging us about getting a North Face jacket to the tune of £300. Apparently, everyone at school has one, they're very warm, last forever etc.

I'm a bit surprised given the decidedly non-middle class demographic of her school tbh, but I have seen a lot of teens wearing them.

My first thought was that it's an insane amount of money to spend on a jacket. Her last one was from Urban Outfitters which I bought in the sale and I suppose that given that she's not going to grow very much more, I'd feel okay spending around £100 on something she really wanted.

But £300! Am I missing something here about how vital they are to a young person's life? It's quite possible that I don't really get how desirable they are.

Would like to hear from other parents of teens about how reasonable a request this is!

TIA

I love TNF! ❤️

Invisimamma · 28/11/2022 21:58

Black north face jacket £63...not £300. You can probably find another discount code to stack on that too or use a cashback site.

North Face is considered cool now?

Well I never. Don't you get them in Mountain Warehouse shops?

Beepbeepenergy · 28/11/2022 22:00

@Invisimamma that’s out of stock like owt else cheap

RemindMeAgain · 28/11/2022 22:01

DSD had a north face (not a £300 one) it was lovely but it got nicked at school. The coat of choice for teens round ours this year is a zavetti Canada, they sell them in Footasylum and other places like that, I have to say it is a lovely quality, warm coat, I think it was £115 and we’ll worth it, do you think they could be persuaded with one of these? X

No, of course not. I meant that given how expensive these jackets are, I was surprised to hear that a school with a high % of children on FSM in one of the most deprived wards in London was full of children wearing them.

I fear you may be very out of touch with the roadman brands of choice

THisbackwithavengeance · 28/11/2022 22:03

Round here it's all Zavetti jackets.

My DD and her pals all have them, they go out looking identical in Zavetti jackets, oversized joggers and Air Force trainers.

They think they are the Bee's Knees!

I know! DH is well chuffed. He's been wearing NF for years and has become inadvertently trendy.

This meme cracks me up.

My North Face coat and I have had many adventures and misadventures together around the world over many years.

I find it bonkers that they are cool with teenagers. I do wonder what they think when an un-trendy middle-aged woman goes past in one!

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 28/11/2022 22:09

15yo dd1 has a North Face jacket. It was £75 in the Millets sale and to be fair is still going strong 3 years later. It was in fact cheaper than the black puffa I've just bought DC2 from M&S (£80).

Still tickles me that anything from the Millets sale would be seen as desirable by a teen, but here we are.

mrsh1807 · 28/11/2022 22:09

Same. Vinted. EBay. Wherever. That’s where I’ve got my kids North Face jackets from. Massive second hand market.

Delphinium20 · 28/11/2022 22:10

Looks like your child and my DD (13) are the ONLY children on the planet who don't have a North Face jacket but think they need one. I just had this conversation this morning before school and was told she'd be bullied if she didn't have one, despite her attending a public school where at least a quarter of the kids love in poverty. She won't wear the generic warm jacket I purchased for her last season (perfect condition, warm and cute) and would prefer to freeze in her hoodie. We live in a very cold climate. Think somewhere like northern Norway.

FiveMins · 28/11/2022 22:11

I can't believe I am now, by all intents and purposes, a roadman.

chickeningonup · 28/11/2022 22:12

I got mine for £90 in a July sale in Cotswolds

I don't find it particularly warm though 🤷🏽‍♀️

roarfeckingroarr · 28/11/2022 22:13

As if we needed proof that teenagers are a strange species

CitronVert22 · 28/11/2022 22:14

At least they want warm practical coats! I got my NF hoodie out the other week and I can't lie to it's lovely and thick and warm to snuggle in.

chickeningonup · 28/11/2022 22:14

Also I'm a 32 year old mum of 2.. from NI 😂 I liked the colour

DS8 has a black one.. I think it was around £60 in a sale

Backtoblack1 · 28/11/2022 22:14

More chav than middle class these days. Teenagers love them - JD Sports has loads of them

chickeningonup · 28/11/2022 22:16

@FiveMins same. I also have a Napapijri one but I do look like a fifteen year old boy in it.

fannyfartlet · 28/11/2022 22:16

My 15yr old DD wanted one and I refused to pay that much so she imported one from the US for around £70.

ditalini · 28/11/2022 22:17

This is Ireland, but holds for West of Scotland lads as well 😂

EmergencyPoncho · 28/11/2022 22:18

Honestly yes, look on Vinted. I'm sure in theory, it would last forever, but it'll go out of fashion and so be hugely less desirable. For teens I mean.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 28/11/2022 22:19

DD (then 17) really wanted one. We went to the trafford centre, she was pleased to see the one she wanted was on offer, then there was a 10% off offer if you signed up to their club (free).

Then she paid half from her wages and she was happy I paid the other half as she was originally thinking she was going to be paying all of it.

verytired42 · 28/11/2022 22:19

It is a lot - but they do last and are very warm. I am sitting in my NF gilet, received as a gift in 2004. Worn several times a week every winter ever since.
