To think that anyone who lets off fireworks not on the 5th of November is utterly selfish?

It’s taken us exactly 25 days to coax our cat to leave the house after she was scared by an early firework display. She was out for 10 minutes this evening and guess what, some idiot has set off a load of noisy bangers - nothing to see, just a load of noise. The cat is now shaking under the bed.

People always say this happens on mnet, ive never ever known it happen in RL.

The only times i ever hear fireworks are Diwali, 5th nov & NYE.

miceonabranch · 26/11/2022 21:04

The sooner they're banned the better. The feral public are no longer able to be trusted to behave in a responsible manner with these things.

Cheesuswithallama · 26/11/2022 21:04

I love fireowks but imho they got noisier.
I saw silent one and I think they should start phasing silent and low noise in and phasing noisy ones out.
Aome just bang with no soarkle. Disappointing like non alcoholic beer

Inthought that too but yesterday and today someone did around mine!

luxxlisbon · 26/11/2022 21:06

YABU to think the day you want to mark with fireworks is acceptable but other occasions other people want to mark aren’t.
It’s all a bit NIMBYish to allow it on the 5th Nov.

Ihatecocomelon · 26/11/2022 21:06

Same this evening around 3pm and again around 8pm. Feral dickheads who need to be shipped off to some island with others like them so they can all be that's together.

XenoBitch · 26/11/2022 21:06

There has been loads going off near me. Even in the day, which is just even more of a waste of money than normal.
My dog is ok with them, but I know that other pets really suffer. You can medicate and prepare for the 5th Nov. You should not have to for the rest of the year.

PurpleButterflyWings · 26/11/2022 21:08

100% agree @DairyMilkBargain . Fortunately I live in a low density middle class low population rural area now where fireworks only go off 2-3 nights per year. But when I lived in a big town 10+ years ago, they were going off for about 8-10 nights during November, and at LEAST 6 or 7 nights over Christmas/New year. Also, during the summer some nights for weddings! Utter menace. Should be banned. Only big displays should be allowed. They should not be sold to the public

Honestly people near me set them off all the time, all year round.

Ihatecocomelon · 26/11/2022 21:08

*twats not that's

sst1234 · 26/11/2022 21:08

People do not need to live their lives according to the needs of your cat. It’s utterly selfish of you to expect that.

I don’t think the OP means that she specifically WANTS fireworks on 5th November, just that she accepts it

I agree OP. absolutely no need for it

Msgrieves · 26/11/2022 21:13

Funnily enough there was just a load of fireworks really close right now, luckily my cat doesn't give the slightest shit. Nobody except you really gives a fuck about you, or your cat. Come to terms with it. This is literally a me me me society.

DairyMilkBargain · 26/11/2022 21:14

oooh I’ve never had an AIBU before when people actually agree with me? I would happily ban fireworks completely including the 5th November but do realise this would be selfish. And in reply to pps, I live in a very middle class rural village 😀

I did hear some earlier. It's not good but there's not just November 5th is there

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 26/11/2022 21:15

Also I never understand people setting them off in the day

Thedogseyesareintense · 26/11/2022 21:16

Totally agree

My lovely little dog takes weeks to get over the November onslaught and still shakes now when we suggest a walk. Something he normally loves. The damage gets worse each year.
Friday night next door just randomly had a massive firework display in their garden with absolutely huge rockets- no warning given to us and ddog happened to be out having a sniff and a wee when they started. He’s been pretty much shaking under the coffee table ever since and that’s with the medication the vet gave us for him.

Dishwashersaurous · 26/11/2022 21:16

Diwali??

I know it's not Diwali now but having a blanket ban isn't practical

Nothing displays a “me me me” attitude more than someone saying they or a loved one or pet is suffering and someone responds that no one gives a fuck about them.

My neighbour set off some fireworks a few weeks ago, it woke up my newborn, my toddler had a nightmare and my dog was shaking and scared. It was an awful night. Why does their enjoyment of a firework trump my children having a quiet nights sleep?

Well, some do, but 65% (currently) think YABU

The me me me people are the ones sending their cash up in flame into the sky, and traumatising both pets and people in the process. There is no need for it at all.
Keep it to certain dates. People with PTSD, and pets can prepare. They can medicate, or go elsewhere for a night.
I know someone whose dog was so distressed after some knob let off a firework in the day, long after Nov 5th, they ran into the wall and smashed a leg so bad they have had to have it amputated.

redbigbananafeet · 26/11/2022 21:21

Some utter tears were getting them off in Glasgow city Centre at 1pm this afternoon. My dog was nearly under the passenger seat terrified.

@Msgrieves

What a thoroughly rude and unpleasant post. Everything that is wrong in society is in that post!

Readaboutyourself · 26/11/2022 21:23

I’d love a ban. We’ve had them here every weekend since Halloween & a trembling old dog. Poor chap.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 26/11/2022 21:24

Whilst I agree with you that sales of fireworks to the public should be seriously restricted, I think Diwali, Chinese NY and NYE are 3 other occasions where fireworks should be expected. I'm sure I've missed some major occasions.

I dont think fireworks should be available in supermarkets.
