To think that anyone who lets off fireworks not on the 5th of November is utterly selfish?

It’s taken us exactly 25 days to coax our cat to leave the house after she was scared by an early firework display. She was out for 10 minutes this evening and guess what, some idiot has set off a load of noisy bangers - nothing to see, just a load of noise. The cat is now shaking under the bed.

Whilst I agree with you that sales of fireworks to the public should be seriously restricted, I think Diwali, Chinese NY and NYE are 3 other occasions where fireworks should be expected. I'm sure I've missed some major occasions.

I dont think fireworks should be available in supermarkets.

I can't imagine anyone not agreeing with that. With set dates, you can prepare, be that for your pets or yourself.

justgettingthroughtheday · 26/11/2022 21:30

They should be banned apart from organised events with local people given adequate notice. The loud rockets should be banned completely.

The public cannot be trusted with them. Shops cannot be trusted not to sell them to teenagers.

In the past month alone there have been several incidents of teens setting fireworks off in kids playgrounds. 2/3 of the park is now unusable. Another incident with a firework being put through letterbox. Only by luck did the house not catch fire.

Why are they on sale?

surreygirl1987 · 26/11/2022 21:34

Yep I fully agree with you, OP. And actually, I think it's only a matter of time until silent fireworks become the norm. The fact that silent fireworks exist means that anyone who sets off noisy ones is just selfish. My little boys (toddler and preschooler) are terrified of fireworks now - last time it was like bombs landing on our house. Absolutely no need.

People always say this happens on mnet, ive never ever known it happen in RL.

The only times i ever hear fireworks are Diwali, 5th nov & NYE.

We've just had a whole load go off around our area so it does happen. We have them going off two or so weeks before bonfire night and then intermittently until nye

Devoutspoken · 26/11/2022 21:37

So people celebrating other festivals from all others cultures can do one?

Or find other ways to celebrate.

UrsulaPandress · 26/11/2022 21:40

Silent fireworks. All the oooh without the noise.

Devoutspoken · 26/11/2022 21:41

Xenobitch, so just 5th November then? Isn't that a bit xenophobic?

surreygirl1987 · 26/11/2022 21:44

Silent fireworks. All the oooh without the noise Exactly. They're available to buy now, so if people are choosing to buy noisy ones instead, they're being selfish and choosing to crease noise disturbance.

No, all celebrations. How we celebrate things can and do evolve.
No reason to think that setting off small missiles will be a thing of the past.

XenoBitch · 26/11/2022 21:45

Won't be a thing of the past, that should say.

Devoutspoken · 26/11/2022 21:46

Xenobitch, yes good point

2tootired · 26/11/2022 21:49

I long for the day when it's organised ones only, not on sale to the general public and ideally silent fireworks.

Newrumpus · 26/11/2022 21:52

miceonabranch · 26/11/2022 21:04

The sooner they're banned the better. The feral public are no longer able to be trusted to behave in a responsible manner with these things.

Speak for yourself!

helloisitmeyourelookingfor · 26/11/2022 21:55

Loads round here tonight

It was the local town's Christmas lights switch on -they do it every year

Goawayangryman · 26/11/2022 21:57

I think it's probably time for home fireworks to be banned, for many reasons not least environmental. Their fans leave loads of plastic and explosives residue on our local rec at regular intervals.

I do think it is probably better in the long run to desensitise dogs to fireworks. Cats, less sure you can do this, do they respond like dogs do to graduated training, possibly not?

And of course that does nothing about the people with PTSD.

Fireworks are going off around here right now. What's the occasion tonight??

SemperIdem · 26/11/2022 21:59

I truly do not understand why they are still freely available to the general public. It should be organised displays only, regardless of the celebration they relate to.

Also can’t see why noiseless fireworks can’t be used in said organised displays.

Sandrine1982 · 26/11/2022 22:00

I'd love to see them banned. I totally agree with you OP. It's unbelievable how some people think it's acceptable to fire them at random times, scare pets, wake up children ...
This country has no culture....

You are bloody lucky then. The fuckers let them off constantly between Halloween and New Year's Day here 🤬

ExtraOnions · 26/11/2022 22:07

I love fireworks .. we have a family get together on the 5th and let loads off.

I don’t like cats shitting in my garden, attacking birds, dog shit bags hanging on trees, or dogs running up to me when out - unfortunately I’ve got to put up with that all year, not just the odd day.

Mulhollandmagoo · 26/11/2022 22:11

I hate them, they scare my dog and my young child! I think they should be set off on specific days so we can prepare for them, I think that's a fair compromise.

Staged organised events - yes but general sale around these times - no. People will just stockpile them.

Ihatethenewlook · 26/11/2022 22:31

Me too. And dogs. I get far more disturbance from them crapping in my garden and killing wildlife (cats) and barking and running up to me on walks (dogs) than I do from fireworks.

Well, maybe make like others have said on this thread. Work on getting desensitised to them.
