We pay £1600 rent and DH refuses to contact the landlord

Our washing machine/ dryer doesn't work properly. It doesn't drain the water and we haven't been able to use the dryer function for a month because it just turns itself off.

DH has checked the pipes and managed to "fix" it temporarily. However, now it's even worse than it was before. It's a very old machine.

DH refuses to tell the landlord because he doesn't want to "bother" him. He thinks he can fix it, but he's wasted so much time trying to fix it already.

Aibu to think this is absolutely ridiculous? We're paying a huge amount of rent and should have access to a washing machine that works.

Yeah it's ridiculous but why can't you contact the landlord?

sunshineandshowers40 · 26/11/2022 18:27

Why don't you contact the LL?

PixieLaLa · 26/11/2022 18:28

You contact them….?

Orii · 26/11/2022 18:28

He doesn't want me to. He wants me to "give him a chance" to fix it.

Of course it’s ridiculous. Why can’t you contact them yourself?

VerifiedBot2351 · 26/11/2022 18:28

Don’t be silly. Just contact LL yourself.

Orii · 26/11/2022 18:29

I know how ridiculous this sounds. I told him the LL would probably prefer we contact them instead of doing a rubbish job at "fixing" it himself.

He still refuses.

Cornettoninja · 26/11/2022 18:29

Is he worried about being labelled a difficult tenant?

Tell him to stop trying to fix it. That’s the landlords job and it’ll just end up being blamed on him if he fiddles with it.

He’s had his chance. Just tell them ffs 🙄I’m not sure what other advice you’re looking for

LittleBitAcorn · 26/11/2022 18:30

I'm a LL and I replace broken appliances within 72 hours, as often repairing is a waste of time/money.

Just contact them yourself and say what you've said here :)

endofthelinefinally · 26/11/2022 18:30

Of course you should contact the LL. I doubt the LL would want your DH fiddling about with the plumbing.

CressidaV · 26/11/2022 18:30

🙈I hope it's not what I think Flowers

FlounderingFruitcake · 26/11/2022 18:30

I don’t think that’s a huge amount of rent. But actually it’s completely irrelevant, you rent a property with a washer dryer so they should work. Contact the landlord yourself. You don’t need DH, who is yes being weird about it, to give you permission or do it for you.

I definitely wouldn't want my tenants attempting fixes. You're in the right here.

You've given him a chance. It hasn't fixed the machine. Just contact the landlord yourself and get him to fix it / replace it. And tell your husband that he is an idiot.

Mucking about with an appliance and/or the plumbing in a house owned by someone else is worse imho. Could even be something in the agreement stating you mustn't/they won't be liable for personal injury or damage etc

Just meant a large amount in relation to our area/ size of flat (one bedroom).

I’m a landlord and it is extremely irritating for tenants to do this. Phone me, I get someone round or I buy a new one depending on how old etc. I have had tenants attempting to “fix” stuff and it invariably ends up with more cost involved… I got very badly burnt with a tenant’s solution to a bathroom shower leak.

Twizbe · 26/11/2022 18:43

Just contact LL yourself.

Merryoldgoat · 26/11/2022 18:43

How do people live like this? I’d be exhausted.

Meltingsocks · 26/11/2022 18:45

Just call the LL! Your husband isn't the boss of you!

Weird.

WeeOrcadian · 26/11/2022 18:48

You live there too. Just call the bloody LL.

The machine doesn't belong to you - so he's pissing about with someone that, potentially, is dangerous or will break.... Leaving you with a replacement bill.

Jesus. Step up and call the landlord. It isn't your property to dick about with.

Sorry OP but are you sure all is well with the rent?
