We pay £1600 rent and DH refuses to contact the landlord

Our washing machine/ dryer doesn't work properly. It doesn't drain the water and we haven't been able to use the dryer function for a month because it just turns itself off.

DH has checked the pipes and managed to "fix" it temporarily. However, now it's even worse than it was before. It's a very old machine.

DH refuses to tell the landlord because he doesn't want to "bother" him. He thinks he can fix it, but he's wasted so much time trying to fix it already.

Aibu to think this is absolutely ridiculous? We're paying a huge amount of rent and should have access to a washing machine that works.

Stop enabling his mad behaviour and just contact the LL yourself.

Orii · 26/11/2022 18:52

Yes, definitely. I transfer the rent from our joint account each month. It's definitely always paid on time.

But that's the benefit of renting , you tell them the problem & they sort it out

WallaceinAnderland · 26/11/2022 19:00

YABU OP. Just call the LL

Orii · 26/11/2022 19:00

He says the landlord might be annoyed that we have a problem and sell the flat.

Pick up the phone
Call the landlord
Job done
I'm a landlord i get any repairs done ASAP. Tenants are paying me good money. My house doesn't come with any white goods though but if it did I would sort it straight away

Dragonskin · 26/11/2022 19:07

Orii · 26/11/2022 18:28

He doesn't want me to. He wants me to "give him a chance" to fix it.

DH, you have until (choose date) to have this reliably and permanently fixed or I'm going to contact the landlord.

I'm sure the landlord would much rather get it sorted than bodged by your husband whose ego doesn't seem able to handle the fact he can't fix it

WallaceinAnderland · 26/11/2022 19:09

He says the landlord might be annoyed that we have a problem and sell the flat.

Why? It's much cheaper and easier to repair/replace a washing machine than sell a flat.

Oh great. 😥Call the LL Flowers

Seasider2017 · 26/11/2022 19:10

If I was paying the much a month I’d want a new one !
for goodness sake, ring when he’s not there or you go to the shops

unless your ringing every week complaining something wants fixing , then why on earth would he want to sell it
The landlords not selling because you don’t contact him! If he wanted to sell property he’d do it anyway any time
your dh is being ridiculous

Newlifestartingatlast · 26/11/2022 19:12

If you don’t have a drier, I assume you are drying clothes inside currently at times at least. On radiators or rails

now that is going to be massively risky for your tenancy agreement compliance

In a typical load of washing there is 2 litres of water that needs to evaporate to “dry” them .

so that 2L of water evaporating into the house and increasing humidity.
a very quick way to mould , particularly if you are keeping house in cool side due to energy costs.

any sensible landlord , who has the space, will put a drier in their rental property for this reason . The fact you can’t use it will probably cause concern for them, given it’s autumn/winter and you can’t dry outside most days. If you read your contract it may even say you mustn’t dry washing inside except in drier.

your partner is an ass. Just call landlord or agents immediately and say you don’t want to dry clothes inside due to humidity it’ll create and risk of mould.

Summerfun54321 · 26/11/2022 19:16

Absolutely ridiculous. I’ve been a landlord and would actively discourage any tenants from trying to fix things themselves. I’d much rather pay the money to get stuff fixed properly than have someone untrained tampering with appliances themselves. You’re paying customers.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/11/2022 19:17

If he won't call because he thinks the LL will say '"£300! Fuck me, they're taking the piss - what I'll do is spent £3000 forcing them out, lose three months' rent on getting to lettable condition and £450 on a replacement machine - that'll show 'em!'' -

well, I guess he gets to do the every other day launderette run.

Or you could contact and ask permission to book a repair by somebody who knows what they're doing or replace it yourself because it's not working.

thelobsterquadrille · 26/11/2022 19:18

Why are there so many threads at the moment about husbands who don't seem to let their wives do anything?

I mean - why is it upto him whether you call the landlord or not?

silverclock222 · 26/11/2022 19:21

As a PP and a LL tell your DH stop mucking about and contact me, that's what you pay your rent for.

Bunnynames101 · 26/11/2022 19:26

Call your landlord. You're an adult woman in 2022, not 1950. You don't need permission.

Last time I was renting my cooker broke. Called landlord, he ordered one off ao for next day delivery and even sent someone round to wait for it (I couldn't miss work) and fit it. If you have a good landlord this will be their reaction.

JustAnotherManicMomday · 26/11/2022 19:29

Contact the landlord yourself. You may actually be in breach of your tenancy if you don't. I am fairly sure our old one stated we had to let them know about any repairs needed. If he tries to fix it and it causes damage then your liable for it.

Rockingcloggs · 26/11/2022 19:38

Why do you need his permission to ring the landlord of your home to fix something you use? Whose your boyfriend Kim Jong Un?

He's not your gaffer, just ring the fucking landlord and get it fixed, job done.

ThreeblackCats · 26/11/2022 19:44

Just contact your landlord. You’re a grown arsed adult, you don’t need your husbands permission!

DenholmElliot11 · 26/11/2022 19:45

Orii · 26/11/2022 19:00

He says the landlord might be annoyed that we have a problem and sell the flat.

Yes thats true. He might. But that will take months. meanwhile, you need to wash your clothes.

Can I ask why you haven't told the LL yourself?

rainbowunicorn · 26/11/2022 19:48

I still don't understand why you can't just call the landlord. Is your husband in charge of your brain as well as his own?

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/11/2022 20:03

This doesn’t make any sense OP

Your husband can’t ‘refuse’ for you to contact the landlord, you are joint tenants.

Just contact the landlord and tell your husband that you did so because you don’t want the landlord claiming you damaged the machine by trying to fix it and charging you. You shouldn’t try and fix your landlord’s possessions.

If you can’t assert yourself like this, then you have bigger problems than a broken washing machine. Do you feel you can’t do something if your husband tells you you can’t?

Notanotherone6 · 26/11/2022 20:10

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 26/11/2022 18:37

What does this mean?

Probably the usual bullshit about 'controlling' partners and that she needs to 'LTB'.

Just phone the landlord, op.

Zanatdy · 26/11/2022 20:12

One of the benefits of renting surely, you just contact the landlord and they get it fixed or replaced. I’d just contact them as he’s being ridiculous

FrownedUpon · 26/11/2022 20:13

Your DH has probably made a bodge of his ‘fix’ and made the problem worse, so perhaps he’s now embarrassed to draw attention to it.
