To leave group chat?

I was added into a group chat for an ex-colleague's leaving do which was last week. I haven't spoken to this colleague since she stopped working with me which was 6+ months ago, so was surprised to be initially invited to the leaving do and added to these chats. I don't dislike her, but we have nothing in common and I find her overbearing.

No one really posted in the chat since last week aside for a few well wishes for her new job as the leaving do is over. I sent my well wishes and left the chat. Now the person who's leaving do it was has private messaging me asking "if I'm feeling okay" as apparently I "keep leaving the chat".

Aibu to have left the chat? I hate having unnecessary group chats clogging my phone as it makes me less likely to reply to the people I do want to talk to. It's not a chat I want to keep up with and feel like I've made a faux pas if I don't reply instantly.

I don’t fully get why people do this - isn’t it easier just to mute it?

But equally you can leave if you wish it’s up to you.

Lemonella · 14/11/2022 21:56

I perversely love leaving groups people have added me to without asking. I find adding people without their consent arrogant and rude.

Lemonella · 14/11/2022 21:58

Also, the leaving do has been and gone. What purpose does the group now have? Do they want to discuss the aftermath or share photos of it? I would leave without question.

Oysterbabe · 14/11/2022 22:00

You can leave silently now so they don't see a notification.

Oooh how I need to leave one but don't want the fallout!

WhatICallMyUsername · 14/11/2022 22:16

I got overexcited about this and forgot to say please @Oysterbabe 😅

UWhatNow · 14/11/2022 22:18

YANBU. I’d just rise above the whole thing - ignore her and get on with your life. She left. You weren’t mates. It’s not worth stressing over.

mashh · 14/11/2022 22:27

Oh ffs she's only gone and added me back in the chat

I'll look passive aggressive leaving a 2nd time

I want to leave the chat because although I have it muted and archived, sometimes I still get notifications of someone quotes me or @'s me on WhatsApp. So if I haven't replied in a timely manner (ie instantly) I'll get @mashhh?????

This ex-colleague also asks me loads of personal questions which I can't stand. Eg about my dating life, sex life, family relationships, heritage etc. Like a Spanish Inquisition. Bare in mind we're not friends and have literally not spoken since she left work so I find it tiring

Notforme123 · 14/11/2022 22:36

She’s acting passive aggressive by adding you for a second time. Leave again and change your settings so you can’t be added to a group without obtaining your permission first.

Lemonella · 14/11/2022 22:37

Just type something like ‘leaving as got so much on’. And then literally never respond again.

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 14/11/2022 22:41

Leave again and block her! That's so rude adding you back.

Penguinsaregreat · 14/11/2022 22:45

She is very cheeky. I’d ignore everything she says, then leave again.

AlisonDonut · 14/11/2022 22:46

Leave the chat and then block her, who the fuck does she think she is?

So change your settings so you can only be invited not added. I find people who don't have this setting activated but are precious about being added to groups weird.

Leave again. I fucking hate group chats when I have no interest in saying anying.

kneeldownandenter · 14/11/2022 22:59

You have to leave again or you are showing you are a big pushover !

Leaving again isn't passive aggressive. That's not the right term. I'd say it's assertive !

Of course YWBU. It was set up for an event, which has now passed. So normal people then leave.

Her adding you back in is just weird. I would just leave again.

ForestLilac · 14/11/2022 23:10

‘’Now the person who's leaving do it was has private messaging me asking "if I'm feeling okay" as apparently I "keep leaving the chat".’’

Thats really weird as you’d only left once at that point.

I’d leave and see if she adds you again. Keep doing it until she blinks. It’ll become a fun game and it’ll guarantee you’ll never have to talk to her again.

Honestly I'm tempted but the rest of the chat may think I'm a drama queen haha

I've ignored her message and will ignore her group chat. I'll strategically leave in a few days so it doesn't look like I've got an "issue" with her. 🙄
