Sausage roll instead of a sandwich ok for lunchbox?

SausageRollDebate · 08/11/2022 21:01

I’m out of bread, I get paid tomorrow so will go shopping during my lunch break for work. I have everything else apart from lunchbox drinks (which DC isn’t bothered by anyway) – box of raisins, some carrots, chocolate bar. I also have cheese so can grate some of that to include (DC eats grated cheese by the bowlfull)

Lunchbox policy (yes that’s a thing at our school) only says; “a balanced lunch with at least 1 portion of fruit or vegetables with no nuts, peanuts, seasame seeds (including no hummus) or kiwi - please only include 1 chocolate bar or 2 biscuits"

So do you think a sausage roll will be ok?

DC is primary aged, and seems to think it has to be a sandwich or wrap.

As a one of I think it’s fine.

984673P · 08/11/2022 21:04

I think that will be absolutely fine.

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 08/11/2022 21:04

Yes absolutely. Pastry and sausage is hardly different to a cheese sandwich - still protein and carbs.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 08/11/2022 21:05

It’s absolutely fine!

BertieQueen · 08/11/2022 21:06

That will be fine. Some kids don’t eat sandwiches/wraps and take things such as crossiants/brioches, sausage rolls, quiche etc.

Traisonthewine78 · 08/11/2022 21:06

I think sausage roll woud be fine. If you're worried and want a different idea, mine has pasta instead of bread. Wouldn't eat a sandwich 🤷🏻‍♀️ i stir some pesto in but pasta sauce would work just as well and go well with cheese too.

pantsville · 08/11/2022 21:07

I think it’s fine, obviously, but if my child were worried about taking in the “wrong” thing I’d do my best to get some bread in if I could. Purely because I wouldn’t want them to be anxious over it.

Lazydaisydaydream · 08/11/2022 21:07

I send sausage rolls and pasties all the time, not sure why a previous poster thinks it’s only ok as a one off?

I don’t think lunch has to be a sandwich - I definitely don’t eat a sandwich for lunch every day so why would I expect my kids to?

SausageRollDebate · 08/11/2022 21:09

Thanks everyone, I will email the school in the morning just to reassure DC it's ok, bread is on my shopping list I didn't realise we had none or I'd have borrowed a couple of slices off my mum when I was there earlier.

Do not email the school about this Op, you’re creating work for busy staff over a non existent problem. A sausage roll is fine, you are completely over thinking this!

WisteriaLodge · 08/11/2022 21:11

It's fine. I give my DD a sausage rolls in her lunchbox fairly frequently to be honest, every time I make her a sandwich it comes back untouched, a total waste. I also give her cheese dippers. I think she was just fed up with bread day in day out

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 08/11/2022 21:16

What @SandysMam said! Give yourself a break!

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 08/11/2022 21:23

Don’t email the school! If you want to reassure your DC just tell them you’ve asked and it’s fine. You don’t need to actually ask!

SausageRollDebate · 08/11/2022 21:24

Thank you won't bother the school, will just send it

Not to dissimilar from a sausage sandwich, and as the rest of the lunch is on the schools list it's pretty balanced lunch box.

TenThousandSpoons · 08/11/2022 21:27

It will be fine. It’s surprising the school allows chocolate bars - this isn’t allowed in my kid’s school. Sausage rolls are definitely ok. Protein in carbs, same as a ham sandwich.

AliceMcK · 08/11/2022 21:48

Sausage rolls are on my DCs school menu so can’t see it being a problem.

fyi mine got fed Greggs sausage rolls for breakfast on the way to school yesterday as I had nothing in.

SandysMam · 09/11/2022 07:13

Anyone else woken up in the mood for a sausage roll this morning?? 😁

decafsoyaflatwhite · 09/11/2022 07:22

If they’re allowed to bring in a chocolate bar then I’d very surprised if a sausage roll isn’t OK! The fact that they have to tell parents to include a portion of fruit or veg suggests there have been some pretty poor lunchboxes in the past. Yours will be absolutely fine 🙂

I have never known a school have a blanket ban on allergens that aren’t nuts before though. Has that always been the case do you know?

If your child is anxious just put a note in the lunch box in case anyone asks.

lljkk · 09/11/2022 07:49

DS used to have a ssg roll at lunch most days.

@Traisonthewine78 Pasta sounds great instead of a sandwich, but just in case your school has a no nuts policy, pesto has nuts in it. My little one has nut allergies and can't have pesto!

shinynewapple22 · 09/11/2022 15:36

Even if it doesn't wholly come under their wishes for a healthy lunch box I doubt if they would remove it and leave your child with no food.

Fancying a sausage roll now ... a veggie one ... but all that crunchy, greasy pastry ... yum !

SausageRollDebate · 09/11/2022 18:32

Sausage roll happily eaten, apparently their friends wanted one as well, so DC's started something. I mentioned it to the HT as DC went in this morning and the HT said she sends her own DCs with sausage rolls sometimes so no problem.

If they allow chocolate or two biscuits then it’s not as strict as all that !!
sausage roll will be lovely
