Sausage roll instead of a sandwich ok for lunchbox?

I’m out of bread, I get paid tomorrow so will go shopping during my lunch break for work. I have everything else apart from lunchbox drinks (which DC isn’t bothered by anyway) – box of raisins, some carrots, chocolate bar. I also have cheese so can grate some of that to include (DC eats grated cheese by the bowlfull)

Lunchbox policy (yes that’s a thing at our school) only says; “a balanced lunch with at least 1 portion of fruit or vegetables with no nuts, peanuts, seasame seeds (including no hummus) or kiwi - please only include 1 chocolate bar or 2 biscuits"

So do you think a sausage roll will be ok?

DC is primary aged, and seems to think it has to be a sandwich or wrap.

Pretty much identical ingredients to a ham sandwich, just a different end result.

I want a sausage roll now

I sent my DD in with a sausage roll instead of a sandwich in the past (many years ago she is 27 now) as she hated sandwiches, turns out she didnt like sausage rolls either and tried to flush it down the loo!

I think that's fine. I don't think any school has the right to police lunch boxes. They cannot dictate what your children eat.
And, I am going as far as to say that if a child has any allergies to those foods you quote, they should eat in another room. I don't see why the rest of the lunch sitting should be deprived. I daresay that will be an unpopular comment. But, having said that, I wouldn't apply that to aeroplane passengers. We wouldn't want them sitting on the wings of aircraft!! 😱

Sausage roll is fine, though I'm a big rolling my eyes at the only 1 chocolate bar or 2 biscuits policy. In our school, it's always been strictly no chocolate/sugary treats. I don't think there's anything wrong with a small chocolate bar/biscuits btw, but I can't imagine they would somehow thing a sausage roll is less healthy than a chocolate bar. Ours have sausages and mash as a school dinner like once a week, which is basically the same.

Agree! I don't have children, and if I did have them they would have grown up in a more sensible era - but there is no way a school would be telling me what to feed a child.

Of course it’s fine I don’t know why you needed to ask? I done a big online shop that didn’t show up so was left with nothing for my kids lunch the next day so had to make do with that was in, no one would question this! My son often goes with a cheese and onion roll instead of a sandwich not sure why you needed to ask MN if it’s ok 🤔

High in saturated fat and I'd imagine salt is probably why pp's have said it's fine as a one off. I agree as a one off no problem, but nearly every day and you're lightly to be storing up health problems for later IMO.

I send sausage rolls and pasties all the time, not sure why a previous poster thinks it’s only ok as a one off?

I don’t think lunch has to be a sandwich - I definitely don’t eat a sandwich for lunch every day so why would I expect my kids to?

Because as OP said, some schools don't allow such foods. As a one off though, they aren't likely to kick up a fuss even if there is a policy against it.

A sausage roll or other savoury pastry is a perfectly fine alternative to a sandwich and your DC's school is being way too prescriptive in other choices.

@Traisonthewine78 Pasta sounds great instead of a sandwich, but just in case your school has a no nuts policy, pesto has nuts in it. My little one has nut allergies and can't have pesto!

Proper pesto does not contain nuts, while it does contain pine nuts, they aren't actually nuts, they are seeds.

So the poor kid with the allergy has to sit alone for lunch everyday just so others can have one item? They will have enough restrictions in life anyway, often not being able to go to restaurants etc let's maybe not pile it on more at school! Also, many nut allergy sufferers would be at risk even if a child came back to class after lunch with it on their hands/ clothes or even breath so the blanket ban can literally save lives.

Kiwi is a surprisingly common allergy, I'm guessing there is a kid in the school with it. Often goes hand in hand with a strawberry allergy.

@Fattoushi Yes, pine nuts are seeds and proper pesto shouldn't contain nuts. But unfortunately this isn't the case for most store bought pesto which actually tend to contain cashew nuts. I always thought pesto was nut free too but discovered this after my son had a severe reaction to it and I've checked most pesto in stores and they almost always have cashews in them! So we just totally avoid pesto for him now.
