To want to see and end to free Tote bags

I was sent one in the post Confused recently, which I didn't ask for and am never going to use, I have more than enough already. Surely they are meant to last for years and we all have enough tote bags now?

I have a back seat full of underused cotton totes that I have been sent. I shall drop them off for the foodbank as I only like the ones I want, because they're the right size etc.

VeryQuaintIrene · 08/11/2022 20:40

THat's a really good idea about the food banks. Now what to do about all the damn calendars?

They’re really bad for the environment, by some measures worse than plastic bags. Cotton uses an inordinate amount of water to produce and most bags don’t get used nearly enough to justify (if that’s the right word) the environmental impact.

Any suggestions on what we should be using?

Thank you for saying this so well. Exactly that, it's bad for the environment and I've got far more bags than I need already. Defeats the purpose of trying to help the environment. I didn't realise charity shops or food banks might take them, will donate some.

Presume the point is, one bag should last the person a couple of years or whatever. The one I use I've had about 3 years I think.

For those who haven't had a free tote bag, get yourself a student who needs to go to some university open days. You will come back with many, many bags, pens and lanyards - all of which your child will never use as they are "so lame"

Redcisco · 08/11/2022 20:47

I can’t get enough of free tote bags. I use them for everything.
For odd socks missing their soulmates, waiting to be reunited
For separating packing in the suitcase so I can easily access stuff and then reuse them to transport dirty laundry home again
For washing sneakers and other delicates
For tidying my kids rooms in a rush - I’ll have a couple of tote bags on my arms and put e.g all the
puzzle pieces in one bag, all the playmobil in another, dolls accessories in another, and then I can have dd put them away properly in their rightful boxes when it’s a more suitable time
Giving people a bag of stuff without it looking tacky in a plastic bag but not having to ask for the bag back
… to just name a few

MrsJBaptiste · 08/11/2022 20:51

I've been looking around Universities with my son - free tote bags everywhere. Most boys do not want one! We have a few under our stairs, I might use them at some point... 🤷

Lolreally · 08/11/2022 20:53

I dont care about tote bags I want free socks 🧦

Hamsterdamn · 08/11/2022 20:55

I get free socks. Those bamboo ones. I used to give them to the DC but now all our massive flippers are too big. I take them for my tiny footed work mate.

Recycled plastic or reusable plastic, apparently

“an average cotton shopping bag would need to be reused 131 times to account for its higher impact on the production side” compared to single-use plastic bags.[6]”

Has anyone got a Loughborough Uni tote? I’ll swap it for…what do you fancy!

Schroedingersimmigrant · 08/11/2022 20:58

Ok no one still said who is sending them all that tote bags! Go on. Share your secrets😂

Suemademedoit · 08/11/2022 21:00

I also have loads, use them all often. Some in the car. Some to give things to people (don’t want them back, but I also receive things from people in them), D.C. bringing spare or gym clothes home, taking laundry from here to there, grocery shopping, library books, collecting conkers….basically anything I need a receptacle for!

Good call giving extras to the food bank. I have loads to our old nursery for sending babies’ dirty clothes home in

Those are the ones my SIL gets. BAM I think. She gave DD a couple of pairs. They were so soft. I wanted free socks. I signed up to their marketing stuff, but no free socks for Dobby.

PeekAtYou · 08/11/2022 21:02

@Schroedingersimmigrant I'm waiting for the inside scoop too. Thanks to the people suggesting uni open days but Im not planning to go to any

mintywinter · 08/11/2022 21:10

I have had free socks before <stealth boast> and was happy to receive them. I don't mind if it's something I can use, but no more bags. Or free calendars.

Was it NRBY? I just got a free one from them with my order.

bellac11 · 08/11/2022 21:16

No one gives me free bags

We have tons and tons of shopping bags that live in the cars, so we always have bags on us when we go shopping

Each one gets used plenty, surely when you go shopping you use several bags? We use around 6 bags each shop.

mintywinter · 08/11/2022 21:18

No- I just took a look there, those clothes look nice and very expensive Grin

I’ve never been sent a free tote bag and don’t actually own a tote bag! Who are all these companies sending freebies?
I have a stash of bags for life I use.

WhiteFire · 08/11/2022 21:24

I end up with free tote bags when I go to conferences and such like - I can't throw them out.

We recently had an office clear out, I rescued a virtually unused Tesco jute bag from the skip that someone had chucked in. I muttered loudly about that.

mondaytosunday · 08/11/2022 21:30

We are doing the rounds if open days for uni. Every one has given my daughter a free canvas tote bag with a few bits inside. They are useful for the open day, but we've got four now!

Kite22 · 08/11/2022 21:54

I've never been sent a free tote bag !
Why doesn't anyone send me any ?

Re Universities - we did get quite a few with dc1 and dc 2, but things were in much shorter supply when looking round with dc3.
Like @Redcisco though, I do use them for lots of things.
I like to keep my things for one 'activity' in the one bag (like my music just lives in my choir bag, etc)

I’m starting to think I don’t buy from posh enough shops to get free tote bags 😂
