To not open windows at home ALL THE EFFING TIME

R1cciteddy · 05/11/2022 14:36

My mum is driving me mad with this… she constantly has her windows open at home. No matter the weather. Strangely it’s the kitchen windows she keeps shut. She’s always having a go at me for not opening my windows enough. I’m sick of it I don’t want to freeze. I do sometimes open windows when it’s cold for a bit of ventilation but NOT ALL THE TIME! Yes, my dad pays the bills, not her. Ps my bathroom and kitchen windows are open often. Please help as I’m made to feel like a bad person and that my daughter will have respiratory issues when she’s older due to ventilation. Yes my mother is nuts so they will be open when she visits! AIBU not to open them enough!?

The first thing I do on a morning is open all the windows, rain or shine. Makes everything feel/smell fresh!

PriamFarrl · 05/11/2022 14:39

I always open the windows for an hour or so. The house needs an airing.

LolaSmiles · 05/11/2022 14:39

YABU for the dig about your dad paying the bills, not her.

I don't like my house when I've not had the windows open. It feels stuffy

Skelligsfeathers · 05/11/2022 14:40

Perhaps she is trying to tell you that your house stinks.
Plus your dad pays the bills?' If they are married their joint money pays the bills

7Worfs · 05/11/2022 14:40

Bedrooms are aired thoroughly every morning here, the rest of the house in short windows ( heh, pun) several times a day.
In the summer all windows and doors are open all day.

R1cciteddy · 05/11/2022 14:44

Wow I’m very surprised glad I posted… and we’re all in the UK here with the energy bill crisis? How will you pay when it gets really cold. And I mean having the windows open all the time?

I don't run my heating when the windows are open.

I'll get through the winter this year the same as every winter, air the house in the morning, then close the windows, then the heating is off all day (because my thermostat is set to 16 during the day and my house doesn't get that cold), and then it's on briefly in the evening at around 18.

We dress for the season and don't expect to be warm sitting still in the house wearing a t shirt or thin jumper in the middle of winter.

GrandOleOpryNights · 05/11/2022 14:51

We rarely open ours in colder months. I like to be warm.

Same here.

userxx · 05/11/2022 14:54

My bedroom windows are always cranked open, even when it's snowing. The other windows are opened each day for an hour or so. I need fresh air in my house.

The heating isn't on when the windows are open.

Awrite · 05/11/2022 14:54

Yeah, pretty crap to reference your Dad paying the bills.

I live in Scotland. Get plenty of fresh air when I go outside. My windows stay closed from September to about May.😉

gamerchick · 05/11/2022 14:55

I like to blast fresh air around the house first thing but in the colder weather it's just a quick few minutes. I couldn't have them open all the time.

Ignore your mother. She's at the extreme end and that's fine but she doesn't get to impose it on everyone else in their own houses.

Sirzy · 05/11/2022 14:55

I don’t have them open when the heating is on (that hasn’t been on yet) but I do open at least bedroom and bathroom windows every morning for a bit. When it’s not really cold bedroom windows stay on vent if not open.

BogRollBOGOF · 05/11/2022 14:57

It's good to change the air, but houses need to be warm and dry too. It's not necessary to have windows open all the time.

I hate going to my ILs as they treat the house like a wind tunnel and aren't happy if there isn't an artic wind blasting through. It's bloody freezing and very uncomfortable for sitting around in for hours.

PruSarne · 05/11/2022 15:00

Currently a window is open a little in every room in my house. The downstairs ones get shut when it gets dark, the upstairs are open 24/7.

FlounderingFruitcake · 05/11/2022 15:03

I think ideally every room should get a bit of air every day. Just a few minutes if it’s chilly out. It’s not an all or nothing between stuffy house and howling gale!

Bestcatmum · 05/11/2022 15:05

There is absolutely no reason to have the windows open in winter unless you are insane. If the house smells of dog/cat then light an incense stick.

I'm surprised at people who DONT open their windows.

GasPanic · 05/11/2022 15:08

You can use the trickle vents rather than the windows.

PatienceOfEngels · 05/11/2022 15:11

If I'm at home I will open all our upstairs windows for the morning but our heating upstairs isn't on (downstairs isn't on right now either) and internal door from upstairs to downstairs is closed. If it's too windy though some of them tend to bang, and we have lots of neighbours with open fires/fire pits so it can get stinky summer and winter evenings so I don't leave them open all day. I love fresh air, but would never have a window open in a room with heating.

IamSmarticus · 05/11/2022 15:12

Not if you don't have trickle vents! I don't open my windows at this time of year, it's far too cold. Maybe the kitchen/ bathroom if it gets steamy but that's about it.

GasPanic · 05/11/2022 15:13

Funny, I was trying to explain this to someone who was designing green houses.

The idea was you never open the windows. There is active ventilation that keeps the air circulating, and the whole thing depended on not opening the windows.

I tried to point out to him that some people will just open the windows anyway no matter what you tell them and will not keep them shut, but he said no they would keep them shut and it would be fine.

Go figure.

ScrambledOrPoached · 05/11/2022 15:15

Honestly OP, you do you.

i have literally never opened my windows in the winter. I don’t pay for heating to have the windows open!

last year I read on MN about how I’m killing everyone in the house not doing so, so for about two days I ‘aired the house’.

bloody freezing, house took so long to get up to temperature, now I stick to opening the bathroom window only as needed.

Why?

Weebachu · 05/11/2022 15:19

I always have our bedroom window open slightly, I can't stand stale air or a stuffy bedroom and we prefer the bedroom to be cooler.

Bathroom windows are usually open during the day too to air it, otherwise it gets manky.

Even if it's cold I need some proper fresh air through the house.
