To not open windows at home ALL THE EFFING TIME

R1cciteddy · 05/11/2022 14:36

My mum is driving me mad with this… she constantly has her windows open at home. No matter the weather. Strangely it’s the kitchen windows she keeps shut. She’s always having a go at me for not opening my windows enough. I’m sick of it I don’t want to freeze. I do sometimes open windows when it’s cold for a bit of ventilation but NOT ALL THE TIME! Yes, my dad pays the bills, not her. Ps my bathroom and kitchen windows are open often. Please help as I’m made to feel like a bad person and that my daughter will have respiratory issues when she’s older due to ventilation. Yes my mother is nuts so they will be open when she visits! AIBU not to open them enough!?

My bedroom windows are always cranked open, even when it's snowing. The other windows are opened each day for an hour or so. I need fresh air in my house.

The heating isn't on when the windows are open.

Same here.

Also, it is more difficult to heat up humidity so if you don’t ventilate you accumulate moist (breathing, cooking, etc) and that makes the room colder.

Vintagevixen · 05/11/2022 16:54

Windows are open now (though not fully) and its blowing a gale where I live by the seaside! However I have been out all day so I will leave them slightly open for at least an hour - temp is 19 degrees downstairs at present. Then if temp dips below 17 I will put heating on - guaranteed it will be off within 45 minutes, the air is dry and not moisture laden (have a hygrometer) and heats up quickly and makes me too hot.

I think I may be your mum - I'm a bit obsessed with ventilation. Bathroom window always open (second floor so safe), bedroom windows open all year even if only a crack. I'm always flinging windows open. If you don't the risk of damp and mould particularly in an old house like mine is high - condensation from breathing, cooking, showering, drying things, mopping floors etc needs to be vented.

OperaStation · 05/11/2022 16:55

It’s personal choice. I can’t sleep if the bedroom window is closed. I also like to air the house sometimes. Other times I just want to be warm.

Why are you letting your mum bother you so much? Why don’t you just ask her to stop commenting on it?

Also, agree with others that the reference to your dad paying the bills is not ok.

PickAChew · 05/11/2022 16:58

Older house and I ventilate it every morning unless we have extreme weather. Obviously, I don't have the heating on, at the same time but the house feels much dryer and warmer, later on, for the change of air.

newfence · 05/11/2022 17:04

My bedroom window is open all day, as are children's bedroom window and bathroom. We don't have heating on upstairs, only in the living room. I have a thing about having to have my house aired, though, can't bear it feeling stuffy.

Wow I’m very surprised glad I posted… and we’re all in the UK here with the energy bill crisis? How will you pay when it gets really cold. And I mean having the windows open all the time?

I open my windows for 10 minutes in the morning when the heating is on (if it’s colder outside, otherwise heating stays off until the windows are closed) to let out the damp air in the mornings. Especially the bedrooms.

It doesn’t take more than 15 mins of an open window to air the room.

PinkButtercups · 05/11/2022 17:09

My windows are on the latch 24/7 unless it's really cold but even then the windows are opened daily.

ScreamingMeMe · 05/11/2022 17:11

Oh yeah I definitely air out my place every morning. Starts to smell a bit stale otherwise. Just for an hour or so though.

I always open the windows for an hour or so. The house needs an airing.

Unless your house is an old one, it will have more than adequate ventilation without doing this. You are really wasting heat.

realynotfair · 05/11/2022 17:13

I never open my windows. YANBU.

ScreamingMeMe · 05/11/2022 17:13

I can't stand artificial air fresheners and stuff like that, so fresh air it is.

emptythelitterbox · 05/11/2022 17:16

Her house, her rules.

I wasn't sure by your post if you still lived at home.
How often are you over there?

nokidshere · 05/11/2022 17:17

My bedroom windows haven't been closed for years and the radiator in there is turned off.

In the rest of the house the windows are always open in the living room (and no heating on) if I'm home alone. If the others are here I leave them open for as long as I can get away with it until they complain they are 'freezing'.

The first thing I do on a morning is open all the windows, rain or shine. Makes everything feel/smell fresh!

Me too....first thing I do

Rosio · 05/11/2022 17:20

I open our bedroom window overnight as otherwise the condensation covers it by morning. But I close them about 10am and leave closed all day until I go to bed. All the other windows are shut, maybe open kitchen window if I'm cooking rice or pasta

Charlize43 · 05/11/2022 17:33

A lot of people open their windows in the morning to create air circulation and prevent getting condensation and black mould.

LovePoppy · 05/11/2022 17:35

Maybe it’s because I’m in Canada, but in the winter my house only gets aired when doors open lol

SirenSays · 05/11/2022 17:36

Are we sisters? My mum is the exact same way. She says it's Fresh! While everyone else says it's Freezing!

How else to you stop it smelling like cooking? Especially curry!

How do you figure that?

New double glazing and double glassed doors. There isn’t any ventilation.
Moreover, I’ll open my windows if I want. My thermostat is set to 16 in the mornings and it’s not often below that. Opening my window for an hour won’t change it that much.

Thatboymum · 05/11/2022 19:42

I open mine at the first click for 30 mins every morning and that’s plenty regardless of weather to get rid of musky smells from people and dogs sleeping in rooms

Itsabitnotcold · 05/11/2022 19:57

God no. I rarely open windows in winter. It's freezing out there! I have one unused room that I dry clothes in and I open the window in there but I close the door. When I go in to close the window or get the washing it's bloody freezing. How do people do that to their whole house?

Athenen0ctua · 05/11/2022 20:39

Where I live it's not freezing yet (SW). No frost. House was 15 with window open.

Murdoch1949 · 05/11/2022 20:40

My patio door is open all day every day probably until mid December, then a couple of months of just open a few hours. Bedroom window open permanently. I love fresh air!.

beachcitygirl · 05/11/2022 20:46

Open every day - fresh air. Nothing like it.
