To think flight announcements should be banned.

We went away last week. On the outbound flight we had an announcement and round of applause for someone's birthday. On the way home yesterday we had the same for a couple returning from a Las Vegas wedding.

I understand they're special occasions/trips but does the whole flight really need to know about it and clap? I bet half the plane were celebrating something special, can you imagine if everyone asked for a shout out, we'd never have got off the run way!

Happy to see that 70% of people think YABU, OP.

I am shocked that's it's that low. Shock Thought it would have been at least 90% who thought the OP is being unreasonable.

@Endlesssummer392 YABU. And you sound like a miserable mood-hoover.

Potterylady13 · 27/10/2022 22:52

YANBU I don't give a s* what everyone is celebrating! Don't care, don't want to know. It's just the same as shout outs on the radio - no one cares! 😩

The people who the shout-outs are aimed at, and the people sending them, AND the people who know them CARE!

FFS what is wrong with a few people on this thread? Confused Some people sound truly miserable. Bet they hate Valentines Day, Christmas, people being sent flowers, soft toys, romantic gestures etc etc... The bitterness and jealousy is screaming out on from some posts on here.

slightly different perspective here as I used to be cabin crew!

honestly, making personal announcements like this used to annoy me, but only because on some flights we barely had time to get water let alone eat food or go to the toilet, never mind make an announcement about a birthday or whatever. People think it just takes 2 minutes but that's 2 minutes I would rather spend trying to eat some food, and inevitably when you make an announcement like that it causes excitement and people want more drinks/snacks, give you rubbish for the bin, or then other people want announcements and it just gets too much.
Sometimes we are just too busy to do it and frankly I cared more about taking a water break than announcing about a strangers wedding anniversary

If the flight is quiet and we're not particularly busy then its not usually a problem, or if its a child's birthday etc then we would obviously try our best to do it. If its a busy flight and an announcement for an adult who is capable of understanding that its not a priority among the 3 million other things we have to do, then I wouldn't have bent over backwards to do it.

personally I think announcements should be safety/allergy/professional reasons only but that's just my own opinion.

ConfusedGin · 27/10/2022 23:20

Whilst I can understand that some people enjoy that sort of fuss, I would personally be hoping for the ground to swallow me up. A public proposal is my idea of hell.

Cynically, I wonder how many of these people are excited about the announcement or ask for it in the hope that what they will actually get is free booze / food / more attentive service because it's their wedding / honeymoon / birthday / retirement.

Each to their own I suppose, but proposing to someone as they come out of an airline toilet is comically unromantic... I'd have found it cringeworthy, not sweet...

I think the way it was done was part of an 'in joke' for the couple. I suppose not everyone would appreciate an orchestra and a horse drawn carriage type proposal Grin.

LadyApplejack · 28/10/2022 09:59

I've never had this happen but it sounds nice! If you don't care that fine, but others do. Just hang in there for the 10 seconds until it's over.

Achangeiscomeing · 28/10/2022 10:06

I was on a flight to Crete with B.A and the pilot announced he felt privileged to fly his best friend to his wedding and he thanked him for asking him to be best man the couple and there family were on board and everyone clapped it was so nice

DuckBushCityLimit · 28/10/2022 10:11

Sounds a bit cringey and attention seeking to me, but there are so many annoying things about flying that I don't think this would make my top ten, tbh.

ICanHideButICantRun · 28/10/2022 10:11

Isn't it just people hoping to be upgraded?

Babdoc · 28/10/2022 10:23

The young generation seem to think no personal experience is valid unless inflicted on the general public as well, via social media or announcements.
I have no wish to be dragged into their performative celebrations or expected to applaud - they are of no concern to me.
Thankfully, on all the many flights I have taken in the past 40 years, this has never happened.

HJ40 · 28/10/2022 10:26

Which airline? I've never known this!

MrsTumblebee · 28/10/2022 10:32

Endlesssummer392 · 27/10/2022 21:48

I think you're all right that I am being unnecessarily miserable. I was just irritated by it as I hate flying and I'm a very private person who would crawl under my seat if an announcement like that was made about me. I find it hard to understand why anyone would want that but you're right that some people love all that stuff and rightly so, it is nice to celebrate life's high points. I mean I still don't think it's the time or the place for it really but it shouldn't have annoyed me so much.

I fly often and I’ve never come across these announcements. I will admit though that my airline of choice makes a few general announcements after take off then the pilot will say - we won’t bother you with anymore announcements until shortly before we’re preparing to land and we hope you’ll all now settle down to sleep or enjoy the inflight entertainment.

Then if they really want the passengers to sleep they put the heating up higher and make you sleep.

xogossipgirlxo · 28/10/2022 10:33

You sound very bitter. Why does a bit of joy bother you?

MrsTumblebee · 28/10/2022 10:34

ICanHideButICantRun · 28/10/2022 10:11

Isn't it just people hoping to be upgraded?

I was thinking along the same lines and the announcements are now a way of placating people.

AutumnScream · 28/10/2022 10:46

This reminds me of the scene in friends where hugh laurie is on the plane being miserable.

Yabu we should actually be pleased to hear nice news a lot its what life is about, not all doom and gloom and dont talk to me.

I follow a good news page on Instagram and there was one video last week of a lady getting an announcement on a plane because she had gone into remission from a cancer she had suffered for years and was on her way to a once in a life time holiday to celebrate. Everyone was clapping and cheering and she cried it was such a lovely video.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 28/10/2022 10:49

I couldn't get worked up about it. But I disagree that the cheaper the airline the more announcements - I always fly Ryanair and I can safely say they would grudge an announcement asking for an epi pen if someone's throat was swelling shut.

KnottyKnitting · 28/10/2022 10:56

Gah! I feel your pain - I had the misfortune to be on a flight with two stag parties and a hen do recently ( around 60 of the passengers) The stewards let them go up and sing through the intercom a number of times during the flight ( as if the flight wasn't bloody noisy enough as it was with passengers out of their seats shouting down the plane and getting roaring drunk...)
killjoy alert

QuizzlyBears · 27/10/2022 21:01

I fly long haul at least once a month with a major carrier and have never known this happen.

Same. It sounds dreadfully common. Like the kind of thing a Tui flight would do. Not a National carrier.
