To think flight announcements should be banned.

We went away last week. On the outbound flight we had an announcement and round of applause for someone's birthday. On the way home yesterday we had the same for a couple returning from a Las Vegas wedding.

I understand they're special occasions/trips but does the whole flight really need to know about it and clap? I bet half the plane were celebrating something special, can you imagine if everyone asked for a shout out, we'd never have got off the run way!

Oh for goodness sake. The world is a miserable shithole. Then we have people like you who are just so damn miserable, making it worse.

We need EVERY SINGLE positive and happy interaction we can lay our hands on.

I can't believe anybody would complain about this. Could you not just clap and smile and be happy for the sake of it??? Pull your head in.

YANBU. The cheaper the airline, the more announcements IME.

I fly Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz about ten times a year and have never heard any of this.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 27/10/2022 21:40

I think it's quite sweet to hear those type of announcements. It's nice to have a little bit of happiness.

GADDay · 27/10/2022 21:41

Happy to see that 70% of people think YABU, OP.

I remember going to the canaries with Ryanair. There was a constant stream of drivel it was like torture, scratch cards, food promotions, drink promotions, duty free, competitions, charity collections, promoting the airline, all x 100. I had such ringing ears by time I landed and needed silence!

Same experience with Ryan air and easy jet 6am flights before and all I wanted to do was fucking sleep grrr

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/10/2022 21:46

I think it’s fine as long as they do it right at the beginning or end. If they did it whilst people were trying to sleep that would be annoying!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/10/2022 21:47

PS not done it myself and no plans to!

Endlesssummer392 · 27/10/2022 21:48

I think you're all right that I am being unnecessarily miserable. I was just irritated by it as I hate flying and I'm a very private person who would crawl under my seat if an announcement like that was made about me. I find it hard to understand why anyone would want that but you're right that some people love all that stuff and rightly so, it is nice to celebrate life's high points. I mean I still don't think it's the time or the place for it really but it shouldn't have annoyed me so much.

I just don't know why anyone would want something like that announcing to a plane full of strangers, I mean who actually cares? Not me that's for sure!

Let's just get through the safety announcements and get on with the flight.

What is it about MN that attracts people who do this bewildered “But… but… that’s not what I’d do!!” act? Most people in real life understand that everyone has different like and dislikes.

youhadmeatsausageroll · 27/10/2022 22:02

YABU and a fun sponge

Maybe you shouldn't read the AIBU board. This is the exact place where people come to gauge opinion on wether other people have the same likes/dislikes as them hence the attraction. Not really shocking to find that here 😆

I go abroad fairly often but have never heard an any announcements like this on a plane

CharlotteStreet · 27/10/2022 22:04

Makes a change from the nut allergy announcements I suppose.

Now that I don't mind. I also don't mind screaming kidd or people who recline their seats so I'm not a completely miserable cow 😁

Let’s just ban everything. The human race is clearly an evolutionary cul de sac whose entire existence should be brought to as swift a conclusion as possible for our own good.

Not everyone who posts in AIBU acts like anyone who doesn’t do or like the same things as them is weird.

WeAreTheHeroes · 27/10/2022 22:12

I'm amazed Mr O'Leary doesn't charge for inflight personal announcements.

Thank your lucky stars you've not been on a flight with the choir I'm in...

You asked what it was about MN that attracts 'bewildered' people who dont understand others likes/dislikes and I've explained to you that it's because you're on the AIBU board. Nothing to do with acting like people are weird. This is the place to come to get other peoples opinions, yes everyone's posts will be different but you shouldn't be surprised that people are here to get a better understanding of others likes and dislikes.

I fly quite often and have only witnessed one event. A couple were in the queue for the loo and when the lady went in, the guy asked someone sitting on the front row to hold his phone and press record on the camera. As she came out of the loo he was down on one knee with a ring. It was very sweet.

Each to their own I suppose, but proposing to someone as they come out of an airline toilet is comically unromantic... I'd have found it cringeworthy, not sweet...

Theluggage15 · 27/10/2022 22:33

My husband arranged one for me, it was my birthday and we were on our way to a special holiday. I enjoyed it. And it was done by the captain during the flight , not as part of his pre flight checks on the runway.

cc1997 · 27/10/2022 22:44

Just because you wouldn't like it doesn't mean that no one else can like it. Surely you can understand that other people might like to celebrate in different ways to you?

It also wouldn't delay a flight, don't be daft.

willithappen · 27/10/2022 22:45

YABU

It's a few seconds, get over it.

Mojoj · 27/10/2022 22:46

You sound like a bundle of laughs.

Ponoka7 · 27/10/2022 22:49

My DD was bridesmaid and on the flight home they congratulated the new Mr and Mrs. It was a nice ending to the wedding trip. I always cheer along when something like that happens, as said, celebrate the positives, soak up the good vibes.

Topseyt123 · 27/10/2022 22:50

This wouldn't bother me. It isn't publicity I would seek.

Many years ago now, we were on our honeymoon around the Far East we were presented with a cake and a bottle of champagne by Singapore Airlines. There was no public announcement, it was brought out to us.
