To sit open mouthed at my MIL when she took it upon herself to offer my DD calpol without consulting me first!!!!

I honestly could not believe it, we do not visit frequently so there is certainly not an understanding between us that she should take her medication upon herself.

DD has a cold, it sort of came on yesterday afternoon. MIL said to DD, "its ok, i'll get you some CALPOL that will be nice" . Not, "oh LEM i have some calpol if you want her to have it" It was pretty bloody obvious she would have dosed it anyway, but DP knew what was good for him and asked me if it was OK. I said no, and felt bad because i thought i was being petty but she didnt have a temperature, and i thought that i might give her some medised at bed time to stop the runny nose (and help her sleep ) We did as it goes. So whilst i didnt have any problem with calpol per se it was just my MIL assumption that she could just give it to her. Then THEN she put vaseline under DDs nose, which i HATE, never mind the fact that it came from their bathroom and was not newly opened so god knows what they had been using that for .

I love my MIL but i am so glad she lives over an hour away!!

Over reacting IMO.

Cappuccino · 27/01/2008 17:15

don't understand prob with vaseline

I probably wouldn't have a problem with the calpol either

sorry

niceglasses · 27/01/2008 17:16

I can understand you might be a bit upset, but it wouldn't bother me tbh. I guess your MIL knows what she is doing and has had her own kids. She probably thought she was helping you.

sherby · 27/01/2008 17:16

I would have a problem with the calpol as she may not have known if you had already given her some.

MrsMag · 27/01/2008 17:17

Calpol - she should have checked with you first
Vaseline - you are being a crazy lady

Cappuccino · 27/01/2008 17:18

snort at crazy lady

does everyone else use vaseline once and then throw the rest away so that every use comes from a new jar?

CaptainCod · 27/01/2008 17:19

oh fgs you are so oevrreacting

CaptainCod · 27/01/2008 17:19

i htink they usedt he vaseline as anal lube didtnt hey>

TrinityRhinosDhWonHerAnIPOD · 27/01/2008 17:21

she should check incase your dd had already had as much as she could have

but chill out
I take it she said it infront if you........therefore you were there to stop her....so no prob

Unfitmother · 27/01/2008 17:21

Bit over the top perhaps?

worzsel · 27/01/2008 17:22

completly overreacting unless the childs less that 6 weeks or so.

I think its easy to get wound up about what mother in laws do, mine used to drive me up the wall but reaslistically you have to remember that they have your childs best interests at heart.. she's not going to posion her or anything !

lucyellensmum · 27/01/2008 17:23

yeah i know

but thats the whole point i AM crazy!! I actually am almost phobic about vaseline, my mother used to force it onto my top lip when i was little, these things scar you for life you know!

But yes, MIL just being kind, i know that

ChippyMinton · 27/01/2008 17:25

She should've asked you not your DC, but she was just trying to be helpful don't you think?

Did you DD hate the vaseline?

hercules1 · 27/01/2008 17:25

yabu on both the calpol and vaseline.

Cappuccino · 27/01/2008 17:27

it is part of growwing up to realise that you have to moisturise your nose when you have thecold, rather than waiting till it is over and it starts falling off in bits

Aero · 27/01/2008 17:27

Yes, an over-reaction I think. Your
MIL was just thinking of your dd and doing her best to make her feel better. Agree perhaps she should have checked in case you'd already dosed her, but your dh was there to sort it out so no damage done. Her intention was in dd's best interests. If your dh hadn't been there and she had already been dosed, then you'd presumably have let her know anyway not to give her any more.

Divastrop · 27/01/2008 17:29

defo should have asked before giving calpol, you could well have already given her some so that was just stupid of her not to ask.

whats with the vaseline?was she planning to execute somebody?i dont understand

WanderingTrolley · 27/01/2008 17:31

lol at anal lube

wtf does MIL have Calpol in for?

Does she have a habit? Is she recently out of the Priory for paracetamol suspension abuse?

Vaseline on top lip is vile, so you have my sympathies there.

GOD OYU LOT ARE UTTER FrAEIKS

TigerPants · 27/01/2008 17:34

MIL just sounds helpful and concerned.

She should have checked with you or her father re the calpol.

But to get narked about the vaseline issue seems to be a waste of stress.

Cappuccino · 27/01/2008 17:35

they sell it as lip balm in little tins

obv they think it is good for top lips

lucyellensmum · 27/01/2008 17:36

i know i know i know - i am being unreasonable!! I know this now and will mend my ways accordingly. but the vasaline - i mean, thats evil!!
