AIBU?
To want a reasonably priced wardrobe
Dishwashersaurous · 15/10/2022 18:18
Finally, after years and years, getting round to doing up my bedroom.
Therefore going to replace a hanging rail with an actual wardrobe. Hurrah!
However, was naively 😲 about the prices. Well north of £1000 for a large wardrobe. Is this just what these things cost?
Please tell me your secret shops for wardrobes
Am I being unreasonable?

Victorian wardrobes can be picked up pretty cheaply in auction houses.
toomanyflapjacks · 15/10/2022 18:22
Wardrobes are expensive. I got a relatively reasonably priced one from Dunelm a few years ago but have had some incredible second hand bargains on Gumtree and Facebook marketplace (including a Laura Ashley wardrobe made of beautiful wood for £70).

Well, I ripped a page out eldests maths book, drew up what I wanted roughly to scale, waited till Christmas where I bought the old bugger a mitre saw as his big present and said merry Christmas, here’s your big present and you can use it to build me this. He goes off to timber yard and gets what’s needed then a week later I have my wardrobe complete with mirror sliding doors, pigeon holes and a tall rail in my side and two rails on his. I’m such a bitch at times 😁

Second hand. I had a lovely one I practically gave away when I moved into a house with fitted wardrobes.
Worthyornot · 15/10/2022 18:39
I would never buy Ikea again. Rubbish, cheap quality and waste of money.
MichaelAndEagle · 15/10/2022 18:40
Ikea pax are the better flatpack type, good and sturdy, can get the interior fittings you want.
If you want a solid wood affair I'd also suggest looking second hand.
TuxedoJunction · 15/10/2022 18:40
Bought a lovely one from Facebook marketplace. Came apart in three pieces so could fit up the stairs. Think I paid about £150 for it. Neptune does a similar looking one for about £1500(!)
ReeseWitherfork · 15/10/2022 18:46
Honestly, don’t fuck around, buy and IKEA pax. Bedroom 1: went with habitat, broke after about 18 months, got a pax
Bedroom 2: went to dunelm, shit storage, got a pax
Bedroom 3: saved the money, went straight to ikea
None of them have broken.

Ebay. Quadruple solid wood wardrobe. It's absolutely beautiful and will last a lifetime. Only £200
CornishTiger · 15/10/2022 18:50
@Burnt0utMum I’m assuming second hand though? Not something we can buy is it? If so link please!

Yeah 2nd hand, sorry should've said!
Thrownunderabus · 15/10/2022 18:53
Where are you looking and what type?
I’ve just googled large wardrobe and a fair few have come up well below that.
Cinders88 · 15/10/2022 18:56
I bought a solid oak wardrobe on Gumtree for £50. It was too big for our car so the very generous seller brought it to our house and wouldn’t accept any extra money for it! You can get some awesome things on second hand sites, sometimes for very cheap if the person needs rid to make space for something else. Worth checking it out.
Dishwashersaurous · 15/10/2022 18:57
Sorry should have been clearer. I want to buy something once that will last 30 years plus. Therefore really don't want flatpack.
Although if ikea pax is the only option will have to do that.
Where do people buy second hand stuff from. I can never find furniture on Facebook or gumtree but might just be my area
travailtotravel · 15/10/2022 19:01

I'm surprised to hear that. We got IKEA pax for dc over ten years ago and they're still fine.
QuebecBagnet · 15/10/2022 19:09
I love my Ikea Pax. Great quality. Have one with a sliding door and it lights up inside when the door opens. Love it.
GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 15/10/2022 19:10
My friend got a gorgeous wardrobe for her new house, I think possibly walnut. She went and looked around second hand shops that are in a student area around the local uni. It's gorgeous, needed a good wipe down and polish but it's beautiful and apparently cedar lined according to her BIL. Might be worth trying OP.
JudithHarper · 15/10/2022 19:11
We just got a wardrobe from our local community furniture place. Doors are solid mahogany and the thing weighs a ton. £90 delivered.
incognitopurple · 15/10/2022 19:11
They’re extortionate. B&Q and Argos have some offers on at the moment.
