To want a reasonably priced wardrobe

Finally, after years and years, getting round to doing up my bedroom.

Therefore going to replace a hanging rail with an actual wardrobe. Hurrah!

However, was naively 😲 about the prices. Well north of £1000 for a large wardrobe. Is this just what these things cost?

Please tell me your secret shops for wardrobes

Join the local Facebook community pages. They tend to have more generous people than marketplace.

Sorry should have been clearer. I want to buy something once that will last 30 years plus. Therefore really don't want flatpack.

Although if ikea pax is the only option will have to do that.

Where do people buy second hand stuff from. I can never find furniture on Facebook or gumtree but might just be my area

I’ve just done a quick search for wardrobes near me and there’s a solid pine one for £80 and a vintage style one for £30, which could be repainted if need be. Just check regularly and something might come up near you. Also, you could edit your search area to maybe 10 miles away or so instead of just your exact area. You could get a solid piece of furniture, and even if you need to rent a van to collect it, it could end up being a lot cheaper than buying new?

I find the trouble with wardrobes is that they don’t often offer adequate storage. I bought a beautiful second hand one once that got relegated to a coat cupboard in the study because it only had one rail and one drawer. Now obviously that’s on me for not buying one with more versatile storage. So yes, quality and craftsmanship are good, but really prioritise how much you actually need to fit in it. Else you’ll just end up sacking it off many many years before 30.

(Having an ikea Pax has essentially meant all my clothes are in one place - no jumpers shoved in vacuum packs for the winter for example.)

If you have one in your area British Heart Foundation furniture shops are v good - combination of second hand pieces and new furniture donated by suppliers. Might not immediately have what you want but turn over is usually pretty good

Thanks all.

I'm obviously not in a furniture selling area. I have settings of 35 miles and am on all the local groups and no furniture ever.

And no charity or other second hand shops selling furniture either..

John Lewis ‘home’ are much better quality than ikea pax and not much more expensive. The pax one I had fell apart after I had to dismantle to move - the John Lewis one is still going strong. Also look a lot nicer.

Ikea Pax!! Fantastic quality.

TheNoodlesIncident · 15/10/2022 20:19

If you can't source second hand near you then why not go for an IKEA one. There are different options to choose from so you can tailor it to suit your needs. We've bought lots of IKEA items over the years and they are all going strong. They are not remotely flimsy, they are exceptionally sturdy and, we found, really really difficult to break up even when you try.

MarieCondom · 15/10/2022 20:21

Auction houses, as mentioned upthread. You can get fantastic stuff there for a fraction of the price of IKEA (or similar). There must surely be some near you, OP!

Magn · 15/10/2022 20:39

Plenty of professional sellers on eBay will deliver fairly reasonably. Even if you pay £100 for delivery on a £200 wardrobe you're quids in compared to a new one. Potentially also post on your local page saying you're looking to buy one. We recently got rid of some furniture that cost a fortune new and could barely even give it away, gutting.

Glittertwins · 15/10/2022 21:39

Our IKEA pax have survived 22 years, been dismantled and moved house. Moved them around current house, still no problem.

justanothermummma · 15/10/2022 21:42

We did Ikea Pax, made a fitted frame around it and painted the doors to match - it's like they've always been there and it was under £500.

ghostofadog · 15/10/2022 21:46

Have you tried auction houses? I would never have thought of it but we recently used one for a house clearance - things like wardrobes don't fetch much money so you could get something really nice. Auction places will collect things so I assume they will also deliver for a fee. If you definitely want new then go for ikea pax, best storage you can get because you can customise them to suit what you have, and they're strong and sturdy.

If you want fitted, check out local joiners. Will be pricey, but bespoke. If you want freestanding, second hand is great option. Check out Pinterest for examples of upcycled wardrobes.
