Life Admin, what is it?

OneSugarOneSpoon · 13/10/2022 21:37

Have seen the phrase a few times now, where people have little free time as they're doing this " life admin" most days
What exactly is it? My bills go by direct debit, shopping on line, kids stuff from school doesn't take that long...so am I missing something?

OP posts:

No one has given examples of things they need to do regularly that most people don’t.

OK it that wasn’t the question, the question was ‘what is life admin’ and anyone whose give examples has seemingly been jumped on

The question was what is life admin and why is it taking so long that it apparently means people have no free time.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/10/2022 13:31

It’s called being a grown up. Some on MN like to pretend it’s a full time job (especially some SAHP).

whereas back in rl, most of us manage these ‘tasks’ without needing to takeca day off or it interfering with our daily lives.

Anamechangeisasgoodasarest · 14/10/2022 12:28

I properly laughed at this comment 😂

Don't forget all the additional tasks involved such as remembering to buy toilet paper (hours of research to determine best value/comfort) planning a route to the bathroom, unwrapping the toilet paper and fitting it onto the holder. Disposing of the empty loo roll, remembering to have a hot water supply enabled. Turning the tap (on and off). Soap planning, towel planning. Navigating your way back from the bathroom.

Exhausting I tell you, exhausting.

Yes I'm sure this post is really hilarious for all those struggling to pay for anything including loo roll or those with no transport to the shops or family to help out. This includes those who have physical disabilities (literally millions of people).

Your lack of imagination and empathy is frankly astonishing. And disgusting.

I hope some day you get to experience the sharp end of this (albeit briefly if you're lucky). Maybe you'll grow in humanity.

No but the sending it back after you drunk ordered it, is.

😂

That was bit of an overreaction there

Some people find life admin harder than others. Some people have more complicated lives than others or specific barriers and challenges. Surely this can't be that difficult to understand?

I don't find that difficult to understand. What I do think is that often people who say 'life admin' make their life more complicated than it is. Some of the tasks being included are silly. One poster has written sort school dinners/pay for school dinners/make packed lunches/sort lunch most days as four separate 'life admin' tasks. The point is that this isn't a poster-specific challenge. We all need to feed ourselves and our children. But anybody could have a massive to-do list of 'life admin' if they dragged it out like that.

Make sure car has petrol
Fill car with petrol
Pay for petrol
Ensure adequate fuel for daily travel purposes

That's what people are scoffing at - not people being overwhelmed with caring duties and other issues. People making a huge list out of small work.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 14/10/2022 13:29

Because 'Life Admin' is a barrell of bollocks dressed up by some to make themselves look way more important with all this stuff they have to do, when in reality its just general day to day living that someone has given a wanky name.

WTF is your problem? You might imagine you seem fiery and fun, but you're really coming across as rather pathetic.

Pathetic because I dont think there is such thing as 'life admin' justm living your life? okay.

There are a few posters on this thread that could have got plenty done on their 'life admin' list if they were not sat posting about how much they have to do on MN

Exactly this!

Why would booking insurance or a holiday take longer if you have caring responsibilties?

Are you serious?

Read slowly: it wouldn’t take longer, there’s be less free time in which to do those things.

Although it COULD take longer if you were on the phone and were suddenly having to hang up because you’re needed.

Cannot stand this obtuse attitude of people being baffled that other peoples lives aren’t identical to theirs

Well I don’t see it as that, it’s just a buzz word to describe something that’s always been there. Happens all the time

And people gave answers - it does take time up.

I don’t understand what the problem/confusion is

I've never seen a more spectactular case of extrapolating a meaning that isn't there than this response

Oblomov22 · 14/10/2022 13:58

I too don't get the drama. I just get on with it.

CallTheMobWife · 14/10/2022 14:03

The complainers seem terrible confused
"people are pretending it a full time job" No, no-one is.
"why the drama about it". There is no drama
"people are trying to justify themselves". Nope, no-one is doing that.

Yes, its just life, its being a grown up. But so is working, we talk about that. So is parenting, we talk about that. So is marriage, we talk about that. To talk about things, you need to use words. We're just naming the thing, that is all.

Why are so many so confused by this?

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 14/10/2022 14:04

I don’t think some people are martyrs over ‘life admin’ or whatever you wanna call it. I roll my eyes if someone is complaining they do everything but won’t say to their DH “Oi lazy, get the dinner on and wash up too”.

Equally there are martyrs who go the other way and are all “well I just don’t see the problem, to me it’s a breeze spending 2 hours a day doing boring shit, what are people even complaining about?”. What do you want, a medal?

geraniumsandsunshine · 14/10/2022 14:05

Bully for you

CallTheMobWife · 14/10/2022 14:05

Oh, and another good reason to name it is that it makes it easier to share it. IME, and research agrees, what we are talking about falls very much into womens work, for many, Unseen and unappreciated by men. Wifework.
By naming it and talking about it, we can look at that and move towards sharing the load better.

mogsrus · 14/10/2022 14:07

And there’s all next week not been touched yet, as gran said, many times

Parker231 · 14/10/2022 14:08

It’s only womens work or wife work if you let it. Everyone I know shares the admin of having a home and family. Believe it or not men can buy school shoes, childrens birthday presents and pay for school trips.

arethereanyleftatall · 14/10/2022 14:10

@celestialsphere

Have you seriously just said that everyone has the same amount of life admin?!?

There's been some fairly stupid stuff written on this thread, but that one's special.

Um. No. People have different amounts.

The single parent with 4 children in 4 different schools, one with significant medical needs, one who competes at a high level of dance, one with adhd, whose car is constantly breaking, and whose mother needs help doing anything on the computer,
Might possibly require a little bit more of life admin hours than the
Childless adult with no hobbies who doesn't have any friends and thus never goes anywhere.

I'm a bit surprised I've just had to explain that.

I have just realised though that it's pointless trying to explain this to people who lack empathy. They'll never get it, and will just pop up on the next thread saying 'I just don't get it. I do it whilst I'm waiting for the kettle.'

mogsrus · 14/10/2022 14:10
