To think we're missing girl/boy bands?

My 6yo dd is starting to get quite into music and we've been listening to the fun kids radio. One thing that I've noticed is that there aren't really any groups that are current anymore. I've played a spice girls and a busted cd to dd and she really liked them. I was quite young when the spice girls got big but do remember listening to them, and then when I was a bit older girls aloud got big and I went to seem them live. My younger sister also liked girls aloud and then the Saturdays and then when she was a bit older little mix. I remember being really excited to hear whenever the current band had a new album out or was doing a live performance on telly or whatever. Now Little Mix is gone and BTS are on a break there doesn't really seem to be any groups that kids can follow (and buy loads of rubbish merchandise!). AIBU to think we're missing these bands- we don't have X factor or pop idol anymore so people don't get the same opportunity I suppose!

Also, mixed bands! S Club 7 were so good!

YANBU, I was a child of the 90s early 00s and it was such a varied scene musically. Even though I was a Brit pop fan, I still liked all the pop bands of the time. Today's pop scene is a bit wishy washy, no real identifying features between acts and their music. Very monotonous. Or maybe I am now just old 🤣

Black pink is the big one I think

They were! I loved their TV show as well.

waitaminutehangon · 13/10/2022 11:13

@Rowthe oh I'd never heard of them! Will have to look them up!

Dd is of a similar age and I've just got her into BSB haha

But yes modern pop is not really kid friendly, the amount of swearing etc is just ridiculous

waitaminutehangon · 13/10/2022 11:15

@OldClothes yes! And the Christmas film they were in about a family staying in a department store was so good!

We're missing 'bands' full stop. This is the era of the solo artist, with a handful of notable exceptions.

Agree. Bands like Spice Girls and S Club managed to be (or seem) cool w/out swearing.

Chickychoccyegg · 13/10/2022 11:17

That's true, my dds are really into kpop bands, which are basically boy or girl bands, some sing a lot in English, some all/most in Korean, but its not bad.
The most well known ones are obviously bts and black pink, but loads out there.

waitaminutehangon · 13/10/2022 11:18

@SleeplessInEngland yes definitely! I think it comes from the lack of the tv shows as girls aloud, little mix, jls, one direction etc were all off these shows!

Have to admit I barely recall that one...they did quite a few films didn't they?

waitaminutehangon · 13/10/2022 11:20

@OldClothes yes they did a lot! I've still got a few of the old vhs tapes of their films! Might have to hunt down a vhs player and watch them!

Went to see Steps in August. Still as good as ever. Dd is 15 and begged to be left in the car. Then sulked when we got there.
Joined in singing and dancing though😁

waitaminutehangon · 13/10/2022 11:25

@Rowgtfc72 steps were sooo good! I loved their cover of Tragedy!

@waitaminutehangon There's a podcast as well now I've heard.

HashtagShitShop · 13/10/2022 11:29

Definitely. My childhood to late teens was classic pop and I loved it. Busted, mcfly, boyzone, westlife, sclub 7, sclub juniors, aqua, bsb, cleopatra (comin at ya!), 5ive, b*witched, bbmak, liberty x, hearsay, all saints, sugababes, take that, spice girls, steps.... Etc etc.

Amd smtv live with them all on on Saturdays. I wish ant and Dec would let them rerun it. It'd still be fun.

Rowgtfc72 · 13/10/2022 11:59

@waitaminutehangon 25th anniversary tour. How old did that make me feel! Fortunately most people there were my age.
Thought I had a favourite song but when pushed I couldn't choose one😁

waitaminutehangon · 13/10/2022 12:05

@Rowgtfc72 I'm jealous! I can never get my head round it when teenagers now don't like pop from back then but then remember that I didn't like the music my parents listened to when they were young!

Found the credits to LA7. Great series 😁

OldClothes · 13/10/2022 12:09

Damn, link failed.

Kanaloa · 13/10/2022 12:11

There was also a weird movie S Club were in (that I sometimes think I hallucinated because nobody has ever heard of it) where they went on holiday then an evil mastermind was making like clones if S Club without belly buttons.

APlanetFarFarAway · 13/10/2022 12:12

I think this why k pop is popular with teens.
They're all bands.

megletthesecond · 13/10/2022 12:13

They are a bit thin on the ground these days. Black Pink are very good though.
