To think we're missing girl/boy bands?

My 6yo dd is starting to get quite into music and we've been listening to the fun kids radio. One thing that I've noticed is that there aren't really any groups that are current anymore. I've played a spice girls and a busted cd to dd and she really liked them. I was quite young when the spice girls got big but do remember listening to them, and then when I was a bit older girls aloud got big and I went to seem them live. My younger sister also liked girls aloud and then the Saturdays and then when she was a bit older little mix. I remember being really excited to hear whenever the current band had a new album out or was doing a live performance on telly or whatever. Now Little Mix is gone and BTS are on a break there doesn't really seem to be any groups that kids can follow (and buy loads of rubbish merchandise!). AIBU to think we're missing these bands- we don't have X factor or pop idol anymore so people don't get the same opportunity I suppose!

I think this why k pop is popular with teens.
They're all bands.

Good point.

waitaminutehangon · 13/10/2022 12:18

@OldClothes Loved LA7! They did one where they were taken back to the 50's as well! Was odd but I must have watched it about 1000 times!

Was going to say kpop. DD loves Blackpink

OldClothes · 13/10/2022 12:20

@waitaminutehangon LA7 was my fave series. Who was your fave member?

SparklyLeprechaun · 13/10/2022 12:26

DD is into K-Pop. Distraught that BTS are on a break, but watches Blackpink and other bands I've never heard of. I can't say I miss bands, there were a lot of really samey ones in the 90s, and I think the same about K-pop. The really good ones are few and far between.

waitaminutehangon · 13/10/2022 12:27

@OldClothes I loved Rachel Stevens! Who was your favourite?

OldClothes · 13/10/2022 12:30

I liked Rachel but loved Hannah. Thought her clothes were so cool, especially the bandanas.

CaveMum · 13/10/2022 12:34

I really miss bands with female lead singers! I was a teen in the mid-90s and we were so spoilt with the likes of Skunk Anansie, Garbage, Elastica, Sleeper, Republica, etc.

Agree that pop seems to be missing something at the moment, my kids just don't seem to "get" music the same way we used to (granted they are only 8 and 5!): ToTP was compulsory viewing as was listening to the Top 40 on a Sunday afternoon!

OldClothes · 13/10/2022 12:39

@CaveMum I miss those days!

CaveMum · 13/10/2022 12:48

Just for you @OldClothes

OldClothes · 13/10/2022 12:49

Thanks @CaveMum 😁

CaveMum · 14/10/2022 20:32

TOTP 1993 on BBC4 tonight for those feeling nostalgic!

PoundOfNesh · 14/10/2022 20:38

Most kids are into K-pop which are mostly boy and girl bands

Yes it was seeing double! They didn’t have bellybuttons, that’s how you knew which ones were the clones 😂 so random. Because of that movie whenever we’re on holiday my sister and I always say ‘we better get dressed, can’t be in the lobby in our pee-ham-as.’

babyfeeding · 14/10/2022 21:50

I loved s club 😆 always wanted to be Hannah ! And I think they must've been buzzin to spend most of their time filming in America

NDMum · 14/10/2022 22:03

BTS aren't on a break, they have a concert tomorrow

Oblomov22 · 14/10/2022 22:04

Actually I agree. It's good for young people and teens, but there's not much out there.

HighlandPony · 14/10/2022 22:06

Yabu. Thank god that stage in music is over!! The only good thing to come from girls aloud was watching Alex turner sing love machine live.

JamSandle · 14/10/2022 22:07

Yes! It's fun, optimistic and light. I loved it as a kid.

waitaminutehangon · 15/10/2022 07:34

@HighlandPony I loved the Arctic monkeys in the 2000s! Whenever I hear Flourescent Adolescent I feel about 15 again!

@Kanaloa that's funny! I haven't seen it in years! Can't believe it's nearly 20 years old!

Arctic monkeys and kasabian were two of my favourite from then and that’s all I listened to on the drive from Berwick yesterday. We had some great local bands too. That was more my scene. Wouldn’t be caught dead in an atomic kitten or the likes queue or doing some daft wee dance routine. That was my sisters deal.

Stars71 · 15/10/2022 10:53

None of those mentioned were bands. Bands play instruments.

miaherridge07 · 19/01/2025 06:41

Absnt Mind they’re a new boyband they’re really good
