To feel excited to be quoted in the media?

I know people quite rightly get annoyed when threads about their personal business get picked up by the tabloids.

However, Facebook just showed me a story taken from a thread here and my comment is one of the ones they've chosen to quote (was the one about buyers bringing a gang of people to a measuring up viewing). I feel like I'm winning at life now!

Although I wish I'd spent a bit more time on my punctuation.

Does everyone hate it when newspapers pick things up from here or does anyone else secretly enjoy it?

If this is what brings you joy in life I’d consider that very sad

TheCatsPyjamas1 · 12/10/2022 21:50

I hate it! One of my threads from years ago got picked up by the media and I was so embarrassed. It was about a really boring topic too, so no idea why they chose to write about it - must have been a very slow news day!

MarianneVos · 12/10/2022 21:55

Admittedly I might feel differently if it was me as the OP. But I read the article and thought 'that sounds a bit like what I wrote!' and then checked back and saw it was exactly what I'd written, and it made me feel a bit like I'm an actual famous person.

I’m very curious as to whether Mumsnet actively reach out to journalists to sell content. Like I see stories lifted from Mumsnet into the Daily Mail true stories column, and it says at the bottom that the DM will pay for similar stories.

Mumsnet own the copyright to the stuff we write in here, it’s in the terms & conditions. So the question is, which is more likely? (1) journalists spend ages searching Mumsnet for interesting threads then steal them from Mumsnet, or (2) Mumsnet keep an eye on the most active threads and approach lazy journalists to buy the rights to some stories 🤔

OnTheBrinkOfChange · 12/10/2022 22:16

It really is the laziest journalism. There is a headline that tells the story. Then they tell the story twice more. Then they show a screenshot of the conversation on the stairs. Job done.

So close to being famous! Yeah enjoy it, don't listen to the grumpy pps on here

MbatataOwl · 12/10/2022 22:19

Write in to The VIZ op. They used to send you a knacker sack pencil if your claim to fame was lame enough. They might still do!

PickAnyName · 12/10/2022 22:22

If you have been quoted in the media and you are happy about it, that's great! Well done!

LimboLass · 12/10/2022 22:25

Well done op.

When will you be releasing your memoirs?

SameToo · 12/10/2022 22:37

I hate it. But funnily enough when I made a thread about it on here the posters all jumped down my throat about how ‘they can use it, it’s not your property’ crap 🙄 good old mumsnet.

Tallisker · 12/10/2022 22:39

I found a post I made on here word for word in a comment in The Times. A BTL comment, not in the actual paper. I was quite impressed and the response the comment got was good.

LampHat · 12/10/2022 22:39

Happened to me too on a different subject! Equally excited, equally sad 😉

All evidence points to you being the sad one.

Enjoy your moment OP, if they quoted you it’s because you said something funny, true or striking in some way.

ColeensBoot · 12/10/2022 22:46

Oh I don't know, it's a good way to get news coverage. Your Irish dancing competition stitch up came from Mumsnet. I saw the thread. 2 data later on the daily mail. Next day on the times. Exactly what the poster wanted. And she didn't know how to break the news

ColeensBoot · 12/10/2022 22:46

Bloody autocorrect.

Pretty rude.

I have been quoted in the paper before. Off various message forums, and on twitter, and yes it is quite exciting and flattering. YANBU @MarianneVos

LondonQueen · 12/10/2022 22:57

One of my comments under a previous username were featured in a certain trashy newspaper (if you can call it news). I was quite embarrassed and changed my username as a result.

B1pbop · 12/10/2022 23:00

Hate it. I used to post here years ago and one of my threads was picked up by the DM. I’d asked a genuine question and people shot me down and then it got picked up by the newspaper so it was like a double whammy. Put me off posting for years.

aluminiumwaterbottle · 12/10/2022 23:07

I’ve had a thread about a male family member’s disgraceful behaviour picked up by the Daily Mail. I had posted on MN as I knew he wouldn’t read MN. The DM on the other hand….I was mortified

AnApparitionQuipped · 12/10/2022 23:08

Never had a thread picked up but have several times had my comments quoted, probably because they've been early comments on a thread rather than because they've been especially profound.

I've been quoted as 'One mum commented ...' which amused me because I'm one of them there childfree Mumsnetters.

surreygirl1987 · 12/10/2022 23:15

Haha one of my posts got picked up by the media once - I was the OP. I loved it!

I think you taking the time to write a bitchy comment is sadder.

Sparklingbrook · 12/10/2022 23:43

I’ve been quoted loads of times. I don’t care one way or the other. I posted it on here so it’s out there anyway. 🤷‍♀️

HarrietSchulenberg · 13/10/2022 00:24

I was quoted along with my username once. I was actually quite delighted (it was a goood quote) but I couldn't share it IRL as it would have outed me. Am still a bit miffed, TBH.

Muddays · 13/10/2022 00:32

Well done for passing the beige censors. Mine are usually deleted.
