To feel excited to be quoted in the media?

I know people quite rightly get annoyed when threads about their personal business get picked up by the tabloids.

However, Facebook just showed me a story taken from a thread here and my comment is one of the ones they've chosen to quote (was the one about buyers bringing a gang of people to a measuring up viewing). I feel like I'm winning at life now!

Although I wish I'd spent a bit more time on my punctuation.

Does everyone hate it when newspapers pick things up from here or does anyone else secretly enjoy it?

OP posts:
iloveeverykindofcat · 13/10/2022 08:32

Its perfectly legal with or without MNs permission (fair use/fair dealing) but it probably wouldn't pass an institutional ethics board for a study. It might but probably not. You'd at least be asked to anonymise quotations and you wouldn't link.

If this is what brings you joy in life I’d consider that very sad

This is just being a killjoy. OP just got a buzz from something that happened that she enjoyed... She doesn't make out like this is the only thing to ever bring her happiness.... Ever just had an amazing coffee or croissant and just been like omg my life rn :-)?

And op I would feel the same as you, don't know why just would have a sense of satisfaction

slo · 13/10/2022 08:45

I dislike the idea but I also wouldn't know.

I don't read the papers any more, as they are full of rubbish like threads from Mumsnet. Tedious piles of gossip and ads.

VampiresWife · 13/10/2022 09:03

An old username of mine was plastered everywhere for a bit because I started a very sweary thread about swearing. There was even an article about it in a 'serious' publication about how sweary MN was and the first paragraph was a direct quote from my OP. It was surreal. I had to name change which was a shame as I loved that name - a comedian who tweeted about the thread said it was the 'best username on the internet' <preens>

It's also happened on Twitter a few times. Various tweets on various subjects have been in the papers. Huffington Post and the Metro have linked to my tweets loads especially. Unfortunately one also ended up on the BNP website - not complimentary to them at all, so I got lots of unpleasant messages afterwards.

Vulpine · 13/10/2022 09:06

I'm always amazed that people get disgruntled by threads appearing in the papers, a story is a story, what ever its source.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 13/10/2022 09:15

One of my threads was picked up by The Mirror. I was referred to as “the outspoken woman”. I imagine that was code for “total bitch”, but I rather liked it 😁

BTL meaning buy to let? Or something else I've not heard of?

Below the Line. Just means a comment on an article 😊

No, I was nowhere near as well known here as AF! But my username did have a rude word in it 😊

That's what you should call your autobiography!

InCheesusWeTrust · 13/10/2022 10:29

I git printed once or twice as a comment😂
Made me giggle. Shame it was the boring ones though

IsaidWhot · 13/10/2022 10:32

@MarianneVos 'Totally agree with person! Hang on, it's me!'🤔😁

Letthekidsplay · 12/10/2022 23:26

I think you taking the time to write a bitchy comment is sadder.

True! Enjoy your harmless pleasure, OP. What I find sad is the number of people who come on here to insult people.

Fifthtimelucky · 13/10/2022 10:44

I agree.

A document I wrote at work for an internal audience was leaked and excerpts were published in Private Eye, with my name quoted.

It was over 20 years ago and I still have a copy of it!

Iwantmyoldnameback · 13/10/2022 00:43

My ambition is to be quoted on the dark side.

@Iwantmyoldnameback

What's the dark side? (I had to ask!)

TimBoothseyes · 13/10/2022 10:56

After MN's interview with Boris Johnson I briefly became a global news story and Twitter went nuts All I kept thinking was "that's me, omg". On the plus side though Tim Booth tweeted how proud of his eyes he was. Only DP and DD know who the person behind the question is though.

ILoveRumblyRabbit · 13/10/2022 10:58

I had a thread appear in the fail once. It was such a boring subject that it had other posters questioning whether I worked for the media. I don't. If the content is good enough to appear in publication though, I'd want paid for my contributions 😂

As pp have said, if it brings you joy to think that you've made someone feel like shit over something completely harmless and a bit sweet, that's sad. Generally when people feel good about themselves, they don't need to do that.

Anyway, I get it OP. I've been been quoted, but I was disproportionately proud when a thread I sort of attached myself to got into Classics Grin

I remember that!! Fair play to you.

UnderCoverFieldAgent · 13/10/2022 12:21

Whenever a MN thread is shown in the media, I always scroll anxiously and then breathe a sigh of relief when I’m not there. Hasn’t happened yet 🤞

KangarooKenny · 13/10/2022 12:23

I got a slight thrill when I was quoted in the DM, but I’ve not got a life 🤣

Keyansier · 13/10/2022 12:25

How funny. I've just googled my name and found a few 😂

melchim · 13/10/2022 12:31

I started a thread once about DS asking me an embarrassing question.

It got picked up and covered in a few other parenting news sites around the internet. I was a bit shocked.

I also noticed someone posted it on the MN Reddit sub and everyone agreed I was definitely a troll making up stories. It was 100% true though

red4321 · 13/10/2022 12:56

Thanks, makes perfect sense now. I was wondering about the disproportionate number of MNetters with an interest in buy to let properties...

If you were The Dowager Cuntess, I have to say I loved that one 😁
