To want to put stickers on idling cars

I am getting so tired of the amount of traffic on the school run and especially people standing around with their engines running which increases the health problems involved a lot. Ideally the road would be closed completely to non-residents but as that seems too complicated to achieve at least the idling should be somehow dealt with as it’s not hard or disruptive to turn an engine off! I thought about getting stickers made asking people to turn it off and subtly sticking them on people’s car if they are idling but I don’t know if it’s too passive aggressive an approach? I’m not the most confrontational person and would struggle to just ask people (although I have done before) and also think the being shamed for it could be helpful! So I’d like to know people’s thoughts before doing so. There are endless meetings about the traffic situation at school yet nothing seems to be done and I thought this could be a small victory at least.

Yes that's incredibly passive aggressive. You're so bothered about this issue that you can't be bothered to politely speak to the people doing it? You don't need to be "confrontational" because a reasonable conversation isn't a confrontation.

The reaction you get when someone catches you sticking something to their car will be much worse than a polite "please could you turn your engine off" would get.

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/10/2022 13:14

Yes, just ask them. Some adhesives can damage paint.

AlmostSummer21 · 11/10/2022 13:19

I generally don't sit in my car with it idling, but I will admit to having done it years ago to warm up a bit while waiting for one of the kids training sessions to finish.

but, if you had an issue with something I was doing, I'd be fine with you asking me to stop (I might, I might not depending on what it was & why I was doing it), I'd be furious if you stuck stickers on my car & there's no way I'd stop doing what ever was bothering you then! & I would tell you to get your hands off my car!

I noticed one primary school with a large banner outside it giving stats on how much exhaust an idling car pumps out in a given time. Maybe approach the school with this as an idea?

CarsPunsAreExhausting · 11/10/2022 13:24

Thank you for the replies and noted, I will try and do something else.

The replies read like this is my personal issue but it really shouldn’t be as it’s incredibly dangerous for young children to be breathing in these fumes on every school run. Might be worth reading up more on the issue if you personally have no problem with it.

There is your answer. Get a life OP! 🙄

Thanks, I like this idea and will ask the school if they would allow this.

You’re not wrong, it is a problem. You say though that you’re not good with confrontation: I’m afraid you’ll get a whole lot if you walk around stickering cars.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 11/10/2022 13:26

Yeah, don’t go sticking things into cars.

People sitting idling their diesel mega beast SUVs drives me hatstand. As an old instructor used to say, “It’s illegal & killing the polar bears.”

From t’internet;

Also known as stationary idling, Section 42 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 prohibits leaving your engine on when it is not needed. This act enforces Rule 123 of the Highway Code, which states “you must not leave a vehicle's engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road”.

CarsPunsAreExhausting · 11/10/2022 13:26

@Twigfen Educate yourself on idling car fumes around little children before you tell me to get a life please 🙄

erikbloodaxe · 11/10/2022 13:27

You're not confrontational but are considering doing something confrontational.
I AM confrontational, it doesn't bother me at all speaking out and I would absolutely not be putting stickers on people's cars.

Why don't you try it OP and see how well your idea of being non confrontational goes.

mountaindewview · 11/10/2022 13:27

Whilst I'm sympathetic truly, please consider that some people may be disabled and that there's a reason for them having the car idling.

In my case, even now, it's to keep warm enough.

If you stickered my car I'd report you to the police

Wishyfishy · 11/10/2022 13:29

Can the school send round an email reminding parents simply that idling is illegal?

CarsPunsAreExhausting · 11/10/2022 13:30

@MrsSkylerWhite Yes I have accepted that this is a bad idea and will try and think of other options. That’s why I asked for advice, as I wasn’t sure.

OP posts:
mountaindewview · 11/10/2022 13:31

It's not illegal if it's necessary.

I have a blue badge.

For me, it's necessary.

I don't need to educate myself, I know plenty thank you. Your on a crusade to nothing and you not the school is going to change what people do with their vehicle.

How about encourage people to plant more hedges and trees in their gardens and schools that is scientifically proven to absorb harmful emissions. But no you just want to moan on MN.

Ps every time you post it produces harmful CO2 emissions also, but then you don't care about that do you 😄

CarsPunsAreExhausting · 11/10/2022 13:32

They have sent emails and have mentioned it in the school newsletter to no avail.

OP posts:
CarsPunsAreExhausting · 11/10/2022 13:34

@Twigfen I asked for people’s opinions, I thought that was what MN was for but maybe not!

I detest idling vehicles too!
For the majority it's selfish and lazy, if it's to keep warm bring a thicker jumper or coat!

mountaindewview · 11/10/2022 13:38

It's no recommended to wear a thick jumper or coat in the car.

I can't get a coat or jumper on without having to get out of the car, and that's painful for me.

I do have a light blanket in the car that I pull across from the passenger seat.

But I will not be compromising my seatbelt safety by wearing thick coats or jumpers.

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 11/10/2022 13:40

I doubt you will win this battle

Also, telling people to 'educate themselves' makes you sound like a pompous know it all.

You actually made me laugh!!! I'd love for you to do this because I think you'd be in for the shock of your life in terms of car owners NOT being ok with you putting anything on their cars and also, it's none of your business!!!!!!

Please get a hobby.

Nut.

CarsPunsAreExhausting · 11/10/2022 13:43

Wow, I will know not to come here for advice again…

If you asked me, and I said no, I'm disabled - what would your response be?

If you asked me, and I said ok, and then suffered with pain - what would your response be?

If you asked me, and I said ok, and then went home and cried because it was another way in which I was failing as a human being - what would your response be?

So you report someone to police fr doing something annoying but not illegal (sticker) therefore alerting the police to your illegal activity? (Idling)
