To want to put stickers on idling cars

CarsPunsAreExhausting · 11/10/2022 12:58

I am getting so tired of the amount of traffic on the school run and especially people standing around with their engines running which increases the health problems involved a lot. Ideally the road would be closed completely to non-residents but as that seems too complicated to achieve at least the idling should be somehow dealt with as it’s not hard or disruptive to turn an engine off! I thought about getting stickers made asking people to turn it off and subtly sticking them on people’s car if they are idling but I don’t know if it’s too passive aggressive an approach? I’m not the most confrontational person and would struggle to just ask people (although I have done before) and also think the being shamed for it could be helpful! So I’d like to know people’s thoughts before doing so. There are endless meetings about the traffic situation at school yet nothing seems to be done and I thought this could be a small victory at least.

Yanbu. But you can't. Most of them are selfish and won't care.

I got the traffic warden, Community police and councillors onto our local idlers.

If you want to suggest that drivers change their behaviour, here's some advice on the best way to approach it.

All good and well until one day you pick the wrong person and get assaulted or worse.

FatKyle · 11/10/2022 14:09

You might choose the wrong persons car to put your passive aggressive sticker or leaflet on op. I certainly wouldn't do that.

Also if my car engine was running, I wouldn't turn it off because you asked me to. Because it would be running for a reason, and that reason would be none of your business.

Strawberrypicnic · 11/10/2022 14:10

Hope you won't be discouraged from taking some action by this thread OP, these topics always descend into aggression (ironically while telling you not to be passive aggressive). I agree stickers won't be effective but it's an important issue for all of us.

mountaindewview · 11/10/2022 14:10

No harm but I wouldn't be explaining my disability to anyone except the police or some other person authorised to ticket me for idling.

It's none of their business unless they've the right to have my disabilities explained and I wouldn't be telling some nosy bastard with a clipboard who's appointed themselves the traffic monitor.

mountaindewview · 11/10/2022 14:12

Seriously.

Some parent from the school knocks my window and thinks they're entitled to be told about my disabilities and how they affect me?

Why?

Maybe this is the best solution here! Thanks for sharing.

Advising women to approach strangers cars is never a good idea. May be you should consider that fact, also children watching their parents do this will encourage them to do the same.

I do not see how you cannot see this.

I'm not advising anyone to approach strange cars - I wouldn't want to do this either. People have shared other ideas on this thread that wouldn't involve the OP risking their personal safety.

@mountaindewview

The exact wording from the highway code from which the law (42 of the 1988 traffic act) is applicable:

Rule 123

The Driver and the Environment. You MUST NOT leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road. Generally, if the vehicle is stationary and is likely to remain so for more than a couple of minutes, you should apply the parking brake and switch off the engine to reduce emissions and noise pollution. However it is permissible to leave the engine running if the vehicle is stationary in traffic or for diagnosing faults.

So no. You cannot leave the engine idling to keep warm, even if it affects your disability.

I would like to do something and I’m at least getting some insights on pros and cons of different approaches.

Yes I am also finding it amusing that people calling me passive aggressive are being insulting and passive aggressive in the process. Nothing lost by being polite.

Should not must

And must not leave unattended - I'm in the car I can't get out of it easily.

Leave the engine running unnecessarily- it is necessary for me.

mountaindewview · 11/10/2022 14:19

Generally, if the vehicle is stationary and is likely to remain so for more than a couple of minutes, you should apply the parking brake and switch off the engine to reduce emissions and noise pollution.

Sorry - generally, means not in ever specific case , and should not must means it is not an absolute legal instruction.

So no. I'm not acting illegally.

Iluvbunns · 11/10/2022 14:20

mountaindewview's vehicle is not unattended and not being run unnecessarily, it's keeping her warm to to a disability issue. So your quote proves nothing. Where is the legal definition of unnecessarily and where does it exclude their disabilities.

FatKyle · 11/10/2022 14:22

Well I'm sure the MUST NOT capital letters will definitely make people obey the instruction...

Itstarts · 11/10/2022 14:23

or leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road.

Only 2 noted exceptions: However it is permissible to leave the engine running if the vehicle is stationary in traffic or for diagnosing faults.

Should not must because this is the highway code. The 1988 traffic act is what makes it law but it won't let me copy and paste from there.

Sorry, but what you are doing IS breaking the law. However necessary you might feel it is, it is not necessary in the eyes of the law.

mountaindewview · 11/10/2022 14:23

The law does not say that those are the only two exceptions permitted. If it was it would say that.

Ask them politely, don't give up, it's an important issue, I can't believe people think it's ok

mountaindewview · 11/10/2022 14:25

Sorry bad phrasing.

If those were the only two permitted exceptions, the law would say that. It does not.

Quality parenting right there, hey kids stand up for what you believe in approach any one you want,. Unbelievable parenting 😂😂😂

bloodyplanes · 11/10/2022 14:28

Idling may well be illegal but i can sure as hell say i have never ever been approached or reprimanded by the police for doing it! Neither has anyone else I know! The police have better things to be doing! I have done it to keep the car warm or keep the air con on when my kids were small and if anyone had stuck a sticker on my car they most certainly would be getting confronted!!

Angelinflipflops · 11/10/2022 14:30

Iluvbunns, yeah clean air is hilarious
