My GHD has died - what now?

HowDOyouspellIt · 06/10/2022 22:59

My trusty GHD has died after many noble hours (years) of taming this unruly mane. What do I replace it with?
Do I go for another GHD? Do I get an AirWrap? Is there another straightener I should be looking at?

(Clearly I am posting here for traffic, but just in case I'm called up on it , my AIBU is "AIBU to think you lovely people can solve my dilemma?")

Cloud 9!!!

Jayne35 · 07/10/2022 11:44

I had GHDs for years, then I tried Remington's and I love them, much cheaper and as good as, if not better than GHD's. I have very tight curly hair prone to frizz. I also have some steam straighteners which are pretty good but the plates are a bit big for shorter hair (you also need smaller straighteners to do the roots).

Cloud 9s much better than ghds in my opinion I have an airwrap and it’s fine but I wouldn’t say it’s life changing .

cannaethink · 07/10/2022 12:22

I’ve got an ancient set of wide plate GHDs which are awesome. I’ve got normal sized Cloud 9s too but in comparison they are nowhere near as good!! I use them for my fringe because the wide plates are too wide. They’re not as hot. My hair stays straight with the GHDs but goes fluffy and flyaway quite quickly after using the cloud 9s.
I dread the day my GHDs give up!

I've had my large paddle GHDs for 15 years and still going strong. They only don't get used as I cut my hair shorter and have the skinny ones now. Had them for 3 years.

Dyson straighteners have been amazing for me and my DD very strong/thick hair. Never tried GHD's so can't compare I'm afraid. Love the Hairwrap too!

my trusted ghds died a couple of years ago and I replaced with Remington shine therapy which are excellent

I have these ones.

Got them in the sale in boots for £25.

Yes, £25.

I don't straighten my hair as much as I used to before kids. But these are excellent and do as good a job as the more expensive straighteners I've had (I've had GHDs and FHIs back in the 00s).

afrikat · 07/10/2022 12:37

I love Corioliss ones

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 07/10/2022 12:38

Mine died after 10 years. They literally fell apart at bottom haha. I bought more ghds and have had these 4 years now. Love them!

GabriellaMontez · 07/10/2022 12:39

Fix it yourself with a repair kit bought online.

TequilaNights · 07/10/2022 12:47

Cloud nines for me too, different league to GHDs, as already said, the original creator sold off GHD and made Cloud Nines.

TequilaNights · 07/10/2022 12:49

Will also add that I have lower back length hair, thick and wavy, my cloud nines straighten it with ease!

SomeSquirrelsAreBlack · 07/10/2022 12:51

I was trying to figure out which relative a GHD would be

I thought German Shepherd.. then Greyhound.. it wasn't until I read the replied I realised haha!

mrs55 · 07/10/2022 13:15

I will say the new ghds only go to180 there nothing like the old ones cloud nine wide plate ones glide so much nicer than ghds too the old style ghds were good but the new ones I find arnt hot enough and don’t glide well

There are companies who specialise in fixing GHDs. You post to them and they post back really quickly.

Fraaahnces · 07/10/2022 14:31

Oh I forgot… I have the GHD Glide heated brush. It’s not a round one with a dryer function, but a heated paddle brush. It’s FAB for de-frizzing quickly and easily. If your hair is thick, I’m sure it would work even better than on my fine, cat hair. There are heaps of alternatives, you don’t need a GHD one.
