My GHD has died - what now?

HowDOyouspellIt · 06/10/2022 22:59

My trusty GHD has died after many noble hours (years) of taming this unruly mane. What do I replace it with?
Do I go for another GHD? Do I get an AirWrap? Is there another straightener I should be looking at?

(Clearly I am posting here for traffic, but just in case I'm called up on it , my AIBU is "AIBU to think you lovely people can solve my dilemma?")

Cloud 9 or Corioliss

OxanaVorontsova · 07/10/2022 01:11

my trusted ghds died a couple of years ago and I replaced with Remington shine therapy which are excellent

ZestFest · 07/10/2022 01:23

I have used my Cloud 9s exactly twice. I just don't get on with them. So if anyone wants to buy them off me...! 😂

Fraaahnces · 07/10/2022 01:26

I know a couple of people who have the air wrap and find themselves rarely reaching for it. The Dyson hairdryer is bloody brilliant.

I think its bedtime. Was trying to figure out GHD - Grand Honoury dad, daughter? Then you said mane... so um German Hollster Draughtshorse ? 🤔😅

Same!!

I have a pair of Babyliss straighteners I bought in 2007 and they're still amazing!

I know, I'm shocked too but they're very well made and perform better than any GHDs I've ever used

LilacPoppy · 07/10/2022 01:40

Cloud 9

ChelseaRobertsofMalibu · 07/10/2022 01:40

These are identical to mine. Highly recommended. At £35 they're cheap enough to have as a spare/travel pair even www.babyliss.com/uk-en/berry-crush-230-hair-straightener-2183RU.html

I remember the panicked rush to the shops with my feral wet hair scraped into a bun, the morning my GHD died.

These days I rarely use a straightener though and prefer a hot brush - I have the Revlon one. It adds a lot more body and bounce, plus it dries your hair at the same time.

Cloud 9

Notarealmum · 07/10/2022 02:59

On the subject of Cloud Nine, has anyone used the travel sized version and if so how does it perform? I’ve got relatively thin hair and only use straighteners on the ends, but any travel sized I’ve used before straighten for about an hour and that’s it.

allboysherebutme · 07/10/2022 03:08

Cloud nines. X

TugboatAnnie · 07/10/2022 10:04

If your GHDs are old and trusty I would get them repaired. Mine have been repaired twice at £25 each time. The newer ones don't feel the same apparently so if I was replacing them it sounds like Cloud Nines are the way to go.

desperatehousewife2 · 07/10/2022 10:13

I used GHD for years but then bought a Steampod and haven’t looked back, much kinder to hair and takes me less time to straighten. Get the 3.0 version if you can afford it though, much less cumbersome than the older type

Randomness12 · 07/10/2022 10:20

Everyone that is saying cloud 9 are better than GHD and have been converted can I ask why?? I am an avid GHD user, on my 4th set but I fear they won’t last much longer. Why are cloud 9 better than GHD? Someone mentioned healthier hair, are they not as hot? But how does that work?

cheshiremom · 07/10/2022 10:22

Another vote for cloud nine here

They're like the original GHDs I had c. 20 years ago. When they died, I got another pair of GHDs but they weren't as good - didn't seem to grip the hair as well and didn't straighten anywhere near as good as my original pair. Cloud 9s are just like the original ones I had - grip the hair really well, extremely hot and my hair is straight after putting them through once.

whoruntheworldgirls · 07/10/2022 10:27

Lloreal Steampod, amazing, so much better than the GHD's

Thatiswild · 07/10/2022 10:28

I remember reading years back on Mrs Gloss & the Goss I think that the original people who made GHDs aren’t involved anymore and they aren’t as well built so don’t last but the original makers now make Cloud 9s so they might be worth a try. I bought my GHDs in 2006 and they are still going, I too have embraced my curls since then but my daughter uses them now. Probably the cheapest per use cost item I’ve ever owned to be honest!

Mercurial123 · 07/10/2022 10:29

Another vote for L'Oréal Steampod 3. Less damage than ceramic straightners. GHDs quality has declined over the years.

KimberleyClark · 07/10/2022 10:29

I had an original pair of GHDs that lasted 11 years before giving up the ghost 4 years ago. I replaced them with GHD Gold and am perfectly happy with them, can’t really tell the difference.

NKFell · 07/10/2022 10:35

We need a Cloud Nine vote button!

Cloud Nine's all the way!

123becauseicouldntthinkofone · 07/10/2022 10:39

I have had GHD, Cloud 9, tried the dyson but still cant beat my Remmingtons

lovelypidgeon · 07/10/2022 11:16

@OxanaVorontsova @ChelseaRobertsofMalibu

Those of you who like some of the less expensive straighteners- can I ask if you had the older ghds or the newer ones (which most seem to agree are not as good)? If the former, do you find that the other brands you've recommended are as quick to use?

I have some nearly 20 year old ghds and even I (with next to no patience or skill in hairdressing) can run them through my hair quickly once and get decent looking hair for the whole day/night. When I used cheaper brands before I got them I had to spend ages straightening and it didn't last as long.
My ghds are still going strong but in a moment of madness I let DD take them to University with her so I've spent the last few weeks looking like a scarecrow, but can't really justify the price of cloud 9s at the moment.

Iamclearlyamug · 07/10/2022 11:38

I'm on my second set of Remington silk straighteners - they are amazing! I have very thick curly (mostly frizz) hair, these go up to 235C and actually keep my hair straight for longer than half an hour. Only about £45 too - bargain!
