AIBU?

To be shocked about 3 people being stabbed over a phone?

girlfriend44 · 06/10/2022 17:50

A gang tried to steal a man's phone in London thus morning resulting in 3 being stabbed.

When I heard it I thought they were probably trying to steal a load of phones then I read it was one?

Was it really worth all that over one phone?

Life is worth nothing to people who are happy to take one over a phone.

girlfriend44 · 06/10/2022 17:58

Wish they'd get a job and then their own phone?

Of course this situation is awful and tragic, but this comment is a bit tone deaf. Do you not understand that many people can't just "get a job" and are forced to live in dire poverty, thus feeling the need to resort to desperate measures?

A dog walker as well. They ran his dog over to steal his phone. Killed the dog .
Crazy world

NCandatingcrisps · 06/10/2022 18:03

This kind of crime is increasing because they know they can do what they like and get away with it.

Desperate measures….yes, it is pretty desperate to attempt to kill three people. I just don’t believe that there is no other way that the stabber could not support themselves other than by trying to kill people.

Absolutely this.

I can’t believe this behaviour is being defended based citing poverty as a justifiable reason to steal and stab! Its criminal activity and totally indefensible. Of course these morons should get a job to buy their own phones!!

Yes. We need much harsher sentences

Killing someone is not desperate measures. They could try getting a job, if they aren't picky about what they'd do.

People who resort to ‘desperate measures’ steal food from supermarkets. They don’t go around in a gang on electric bikes, stabbing people and stealing phones.

These are likely to be young people (probably under 20), what other ways do you think they’ve tried to get a job and get out of poverty? If, indeed that is their situation.

In London, you get free travel until 15 on buses, reduced rate if in education and there’s also an apprenticeship Oyster Card. There is 24/7 transport, meaning you can travel pretty much anywhere at any time to get work. There are many, many more opportunities than in the rest of the country.

Florenz · 06/10/2022 18:11

Crime is out of control in London at the moment and they have a very weak mayor who isn't willing to do anything about it.

CookieDoughKid · 06/10/2022 18:13

Life isn't that meaningful to them. Their brains are pretty conditioned to act selfishly and take risks. It will take a whole lot of psychological conditioning and reform for them to change and that's got to come from them. As it is, they feel they can do what they like and no one is gonna come after them.

Fairyliz · 06/10/2022 18:14

I assume they are on drugs rather than poor people desperate to steal something to sell for food?
Why do we ignore this time and time again choosing to blame poverty/the government?

Ponoka7 · 06/10/2022 18:15

This was Kent, not the Bishopsgate incident. The men stopped in a car and jumped out with weapons. The victim let go of one of the dog leads and the men ran the dog over. This crime hasn't been committed because of poverty.

EfficientDynamics · 06/10/2022 18:15

London, shock!

Erm? I wasn't defending the behaviour at all, I clarified it was awful and tragic. I felt the statement "just get a job" was a bit tone deaf. Views from all sides should be welcome here otherwise it's not a discussion but an echo chamber.

This is basic criminality, not people stealing because they're desperate to eat

They might also live in poverty but has it passed you by that there are countless job adverts, businesses are desperate for staff. I havent seen businesses advertising like this for decades,, they're resorting to putting posters in their shop windows now

Jobs are there for those that want them, but its likely that people that think nothing of carrying weapons and using them to take a phone are not that employable.

roundtable · 06/10/2022 18:19

Perhaps people could vote for parties that don't take policeman off the beat and chronically underfund services?

There's no fear as there's no law about and the country is so divided with us and them. It's going to take at least a generation to sort out again. Progress was being made with sure start centres and early intervention but they've been gone for over a decade now. Then the curriculum was made harder but everyone is supposed to stay in education until 18, specialist funding was cut to the bone - I could go on. We're now seeing those kids grow up.

It's a sad situation. Prevention is better than a cure but that takes times. Politics just seems to be about short term gimmicks and being popular.

roundtable · 06/10/2022 18:20

My thoughts are with his family. They must be devastated.

NCandatingcrisps · 06/10/2022 18:20

The Met police have completely different priorities than one would expect. They are pretty thin on the ground too. Knife and gun crime is completely out of control, as is burglary, robbery and car crime. The latter 3 just mean waiting a couple of weeks for a crime number. Mugging, assault, no response unless there is actually a dead body.

LimpBiskit · 06/10/2022 18:21

You clearly live a sanitised life as this happens every day.

megletthesecond · 06/10/2022 18:22

They'll already have criminal records and not be able to get a job.

Some people did stop an attempted phone theft the other day. There's a video of the thief being rugby tackled and put into a headlock.
