To flush slugs

Romeoalpha · 05/10/2022 20:48

Inspired by the spider in the bin thread. Conscience pricking me a bit.

I have (had) a problem with slugs in the kitchen at night. They get in somewhere behind the fitted units but I’m not sure exactly where / how.
I dropped them outside for a while but they eventually came back.

So I started to flush any I found down the toilet. The slug problem is now very much reduced. I know that to flush the slugs was not kind. But was I unreasonable?

@BlackCatTabbyCat 😂

Ywnu

Icecreamandapplepie · 05/10/2022 21:34

My nan used to have a bowl of salt shed drop them into, then sit smoking her fags as they shrivelled up on rhe table next to her 😳

eatyourcrustspls · 05/10/2022 21:34

We moved house because of slugs. We had hundreds get in. All over our brand new kitchen. All over our son's toys. Hideous awful things. I can't pick them up as I have this irrational fear of them. I salt them. No regrets.

Icecreamandapplepie · 05/10/2022 21:35

A bowl of beer works.

They love the stuff, get tipsy, fall in and drown.

Not a bad way to go?

Joolsin · 05/10/2022 21:36

You're very kind to them, OP, my dad used to burn them with a blowtorch! 🔥

sayanythingelse · 05/10/2022 21:41

YANBU but I say this as someone who also has an uncontrollable slug problem in the kitchen.
They're vile and I hate it when they escape the kitchen and slime all over my carpets. Once they even slimed all the way down the hallway, up the wall and all over my winter coat. I washed it, hung it back up and the buggers slimed all over it again 😡
I flick them outside but I don't blame you.

boatahoy · 05/10/2022 21:49

YANBU and I wouldn't give flushing them down the loo a second thought. I can only imagine those who think yabu have never had an issue with the disgusting, slimy blighters.

MrsHamlet · 05/10/2022 21:50

Putting them next door won't help. Someone told me they have a homing instinct.

sqirrelfriends · 05/10/2022 21:53

Nah, I hate the bastards. They eat everything they can get their slimy maws on including half of my garden.

used to use beer traps but have had much more success with bran. They love it more than anything else and will crawl over a lettuce to get to it. Unfortunately it also dehydrates them.

TheSausageKingofChicago · 05/10/2022 21:53

We also have slugs. Slimy little bastards. Apparently Victorian houses are bad for them because they have no foundations or something.

But did you know they are nocturnal? So if you leave the kitchen light on, they mostly stay away. We do get the odd rogue, but I’d say 10% compared to leaving the light off.

SirenSays · 05/10/2022 21:54

I couldn't carry a slug into my bathroom and flush it, it wouldn't even enter my head. What if they come back?!

Qwerkie · 05/10/2022 21:55

I used to feed them to our chickens in a savage hunger games sort of way. collect them off my plants and chuck them in the chicken pen - the chickens went loopy for them

I can't bring myself to care about the fate of a slug, the vegetable eating cunts.

😂😂 I agree.

Feelinglow27 · 05/10/2022 21:59

I always wonder at these people who judge whether a life is worth living based on looks/ usefulness/ inconvenience to humans.

MsBombastic555 · 05/10/2022 22:03

HeckyPeck · 05/10/2022 21:24

They definitely will.

They are probably organising their attack now OP.

😂 definitely. I can picture them now. It's a cute picture in my head. They look displeased. And YABU OP. Sorry x

Isleoftights · 05/10/2022 22:05

Solution.....GET A DE-HUMIDIEFIER ! Had slug problem in kitchen. Got a de-humidifIer, which dries out all the hidden nooks and cranies in the kitchen you can't see, and they dsisappeared.

Grendalsmum · 05/10/2022 22:10

Get a hedgehog? Anyway - it's only the little grey ones that eat veggies. A lot of the big ones eat other slugs!

This is the post of the day. 🤣

I have a massive fear of slugs 🤢 absolutely vile creatures I couldn't go near one to pick it up but I definitely wouldn't put it down the toilet only because I'd be constantly worrying it would slither its way back up and into my bum.

🤣🤣🫣

BeserkGiraffe · 05/10/2022 23:07

I usually put them in the green bin. I think of it as a kind of slug anti-purgatory where they can feast, before their inevitable demise when the bin is collected.

It seems the right fit for them as I cannot think of anything else that more closely fits the definition of garden waste.

VestaTilley · 05/10/2022 23:12

YANBU. I used to just put salt on them. I know it’s cruel, and I do feel guilty - but seeing six of the slimy little fuckers eating from my cats food bowls (in our old home, thank goodness) tipped me over the edge.

figtrees · 06/10/2022 00:06

I found one in the kitchen today. By found I mean I stepped on it and felt its guts swish up between my toes.

Let out a scream so loud my boyfriend and my dog both came running to defend/help me. I didn't even know I could scream like that!

Of course I flushed it! On my way to the shower to wash my toes that will never feel clean again. I'm hanging that foot out of the bed as I write this as I don't want my unclean slug toes touching the sheets.

YANBU!

That seems like a good solution, make the chickens happy. Or maybe put on a bird table for those of us who are henless?
