To think all the best ideas have now been thought off?

Do you think all the technology ideas like FB, Twitter, Deliveroo, Dating Websites, Friends Reunited airbnb, and so on have all been taken now.
Does anyone wonder what the next big thing will be or has it all been thought of now?
What are we missing if anything?

I was thinking the same the other day actually 😂 I don't think we can get much more innovative technology wise, surely?

Cornettoninja · 04/10/2022 20:25

there’ll be more to come no doubt about it. Ingenuity is often a response to circumstance and nothing stays the same forever.

pigsDOfly · 04/10/2022 20:44

Of course there's more to come.

You don't know what you don't know so it's understandable that we don't know what more can be achieved.

I can remember my very tech savvy son, then aged around 14/15, saying the same thing.

He thought that technology was so far advanced there was nowhere further to go.

He's still very tech savvy and is now 42.

A lot has changed in those intervening years.

declutteringmymind · 04/10/2022 20:44

No. It's just the beginning I think.

CellarBellaatemycoal · 04/10/2022 20:48

No …there’s so much to come. I can’t wait for the day you can smell perfume samples through an Iphone.

CaptainThe95thRifles · 04/10/2022 20:49

Well, yes, many of the best ideas have been thought of - the wheel, stirrups, the internal combustion engine, sliced bread* - but I'm quite sure someone will come along with another daft money making gimmick on the internet soon enough! The real advances are in the things you can't imagine being automated or changed, so unless you're the one who sees the niche, you won't even imagine it until it's here.

(*slightly erratic selection of "major" advances in technology!)

LemonsOnSaleAgain · 04/10/2022 20:50

The job I do now didn't exist when I was 14/15 and I never would have even imagined it back then. There is more to come.

AsAnyFuleKno · 04/10/2022 20:51

There's room for more invention - wireless electricity for instance (so no cables or batteries, your appliance would just draw electricity from your mains).

Holographic style immersive 3d viewing tech for the home.

Hoverboards and flying cars from Back to the Future Grin

Hyperloop network for all travel, domestic and international

Basically, anything that's impossible but desirable/useful might in theory be invented in the future.

HappyDad2DS · 04/10/2022 20:51

Charles H. Duell was the Commissioner of US patent office in 1899. Mr. Deull's most famous attributed utterance is that "everything that can be invented has been invented."

Note: people are now claiming he never said this, but it does illustrate the point that thinking we've reached the limits of human endeavour is not new. I think (and hope) we have a fair way to go!

dottypotter · 04/10/2022 20:52

Interesting.

I had a dream the other day that you could step into your screen and transport anywhere in the world

sounds mad but one day it could be reality rather than my mad brain in overdrive

donttellmehesalive · 04/10/2022 20:55

I imagine the victorians thought they were at the peak of industrial innovation

Definitely more to come

TheYearOfSmallThings · 04/10/2022 20:55

I mean we are short of realistic and achievable ideas for generating clean energy, reversing climate change, preserving the planet for future generations. I don't think we can stop thinking quite yet...

InCheesusWeTrust · 04/10/2022 20:55

There is loads to come in Uk!
Flying cars, teleporting, houses iwth insulation and proper fucking insulating windows, aliens, dna mash ups (Need a light at night? Have it always at the tip of your finger with FirefingerDNA(TM)! Firefly dna mixed into finger of your choice!), Mini ever growing veg and fruit rooms for nonstop supply at your leasure..

So much to look forward to!

Nuclear?

InCheesusWeTrust · 04/10/2022 20:57

I also want smrll videos where you can record smell with the video and send it. Like "smell this sea!"

FourTeaFallOut · 04/10/2022 20:57

Hanging out for the nanobots for all and a Star Trek food dispenser here.

FourTeaFallOut · 04/10/2022 20:57

And a robot from the Jetsons.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 04/10/2022 20:58

Nuclear?

I don't feel we have quite ironed out the problems with that in terms of waste products.

InCheesusWeTrust · 04/10/2022 20:58

We just need governments to give up all the secrets they are hiing. Like Stargate. We know they have it!

I thought that fusion is clean. Except helium? Which can be repurposed?

Everylittlethingsgonnabealright · 04/10/2022 21:00

Loads more to come! I think we’re only just scratching the surface

Some current technology eg social media algorithms are making us mentally ill.

Imagine technology + emotional intelligence!

There was a fantastic advert on TV during the first one or two lockdowns - back when we didn’t have a vaccine - which imagined how hopeful the world might be like if we overcame Covid and leaped in medical sciences and other technology. That’s where I think we’ll go eventually.

Fairislefandango · 04/10/2022 21:00

Of course not. Listing things that already exist and saying they've already been invented so there's nothing left is really daft! If you'd asked someone before the invention of all those things you memtioned, they wouldn't have thougtof them as possible inventions either!

Back in the 1980s, there was a BBC 'smellivision' experiment.

Before you get excited by this amazing technological leap ... a scatch and sniff card was included in the Radio Times, with instructions as to when to scratch which bit during the TV programme😂

The 'newly mown grass' smell was quite realistic, I remember.

YellowRedBlueGreen · 04/10/2022 21:02

Cars with built in breathalysers that refuse to start if over the limit
