Hotel gate - couple refused to pay their Wedding Bill shamed on Social Media

A hotel in my area 'The Townhouse Durham' was ripped off by a couple. The couple are trying to avoid paying there bill by complaining.

There is a huge backlash against the couple with people sharing their own problems they've had with the couple - they seem like a pair of scammers.

HOWEVER

I'm finding the Hotel a BU now, they seem to be really enjoying the drama and stirring the pot with updates on social media in a vendetta against the couple, it looks cheap IMO. If their is a complaint in place, perhaps libelous and a breach of confidentiality?

Thoughts?

Nah, pay the bill or get your photo in the windae.

Bllueblazerblack · 29/09/2022 22:59

If the allegations are true then the behaviour of this couple is despicable. However, I found the venue's posts in particular claiming that one of the couple's PIP is now being checked is also absolutely wrong.

StrawberryRed · 29/09/2022 23:03

Reading back I managed to mix up my there and their. I'm tired, sorry!

Yes I feel its all a bit unnecessary. If they scammed then name and shame however they are now leading a public witch hunt.

Wow. I'd be wary of having any dealings with a business that behaved in such a volatile way.

Am kind of over the whole social media outrage thing tbh. Mostly it's way ott and disproportionate wrt what's actually gone on.

I agree with this.

Rapidtango · 29/09/2022 23:06

I suppose if the couple had paid, none of this would be happening.

purpleme12 · 29/09/2022 23:06

I kind of agree OP

This. They’ve only got themselves to blame.

The defaulting couple are responsible for any problems they're now encountering, if they hadn't tried to rob the hotel none of this would have happened. Hopefully others will think twice about defrauding hoteliers, any hotel, restaurant should name people like this.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 29/09/2022 23:08

Also fairly local to the hotel and I thought their behaviour was very distasteful. After the initial post they have posted private messages people have sent them and behaved very unprofessionally. The couple should pay but the townhouse will never get my custom after seeing their standards on social media.

AchatAVendre · 29/09/2022 23:10

Have they still not paid?

They need to pay. End of story.

Skatewing · 29/09/2022 23:11

It's about time businesses and staff that are treated poorly fight back.

Lapland123 · 29/09/2022 23:12

but the couple are thieves- the gloves are off! The hotel should do and say whatever they want, they are the victims

jakesbakes · 29/09/2022 23:14

I think there's been a time where a lot of businesses had to put up with crap like this just to look professional and stay professional just for the sake of their businesses. It's time to fight back people like this and believe me I would support the business to name and shame people like this. I do wonder if it was the other way round where the business took a deposit and on the day said sorry we can't deliver to someplace else, imagine the outcry on the reviews etc?

BruceHellerAlmighty · 29/09/2022 23:19

They're sharing personal text messages allegedly from the couple that other people have screenshot and sent them though. It's all very ranty, unfocused and uncontrolled and they're looking a bit slingshot.

OldTinHat · 29/09/2022 23:20

From what I understand, they're regulars at the hotel, had an agreement to pay the bill after the wedding when they got paid, they say they will pay but are disputing service in that they didn't get what they agreed on food wise?

Maverickess · 29/09/2022 23:23

People are pulling this kind of crap more and more, I work in hospitality and it's become quite common for people to refuse to pay over some over inflated issue, create one that's untrue or decide to take issue with something they've already agreed to, say they didn't agree and then claim they've been treated unfairly and therefore shouldn't have to pay.
I don't totally agree with all of the actions of the hotel over the online stuff if I'm honest, but I do think that if it's ok to name and shame a business and individuals that work in it (I've been publicly trashed on SM, by name, through my job) then it's ok to name and shame guests who behave like this.
People are encouraged and take pleasure almost in trashing businesses online to get something free, or for attention, this is the other side of the coin.
At the end of the day if they'd paid their bill there wouldn't be a situation at all.

BruceHellerAlmighty · 29/09/2022 23:24

Ah right that makes sense. I wondered if there was some kind of personal beef going on. They really need to take it down a notch. They've already got thousands of people posting about how this couple are cunts and deserve to die etc, as is always the way with these shamings, so mission accomplished fwiw.

HollyJollyXmas57 · 29/09/2022 23:24

drpet49 · 29/09/2022 23:06

^ I agree. Seems fair.

reallypuzzledoverthis · 29/09/2022 23:26

The hotel should have taken payment up front like any other wedding supplier

rwalker · 29/09/2022 23:29

piss takers serves them right

Rapidtango · 29/09/2022 23:31

OldTimHat, there's online reviews from the couple stating what brilliant service they had from the venue - I think the 'dispute' is a pile of poo.

PearlWithTheGirlEarring · 29/09/2022 23:33

Oh what a tangled web we weave and all that. No sympathy for them.

malbecbox · 29/09/2022 23:44

I've followed this with interest. Both seem to have form for scamming, talking the talk, convincing stories etc etc. lots of people saying at least one of them have scammed them including removals firms and other businesses and ex partners in the Canaries for one of them.

The cctv proves their buffet claims are fabricated.
If a PIP claimant who walks with a stick is seen throwing moves on a dance floor I'm fine with their claims handler looking into it further.
They have been seen locally going round multiple McDonalds asking for the monopoly thingys in the last day or two. Not exactly terrifies behaviour.
Just pay the outstanding bill. The Townhouse have even said they will waive the disputed corkage bill as an olive branch.
I think the townhouse have pulled a blinder. The social media support and follows is worth more than the outstanding debt.
