Vinted out of pocket

abw94 · 28/09/2022 12:26

Just sold an item on Vinted for £3, buyer selected Royal Mail as delivery service (didn't realise you could deselect these). The postage sent was £2.15 but when I came to sort the postage on the Royal Mail website it was coming out at £2.85 so 70p out of pocket. Whilst this isn't a lot I would have to print the label off at work, drive to a post office which is completely out of my way by 10 minutes. I messaged the buyer informing her I would be out of pocket and her attitude was 'right ok?', I messaged again and had a response 'lol I've cancelled it'.

I was going to cancel it anyway as I would have come away with £2.30 and after driving to post it and packaging I would be left with next time nothing.

Am I unreasonable for not wanting to be 70p out of pocket? 😂

Just as a side note, Royal Mail did have the option to collect from my house but the next available day was next Wednesday as Saturday and Sunday was unavailable and Vinted gave me 5 days to post the item so this wasn't an option.

YABU sorry. It's easy to switch off what methods you don't want to use. It's 70p. I'd have just took the hit this time and then changed it.
You're lucky she cancelled it, if you had I think it would've given you an automatic bad review.

mummyh2016 · 28/09/2022 12:29

Are you new to vinted?

abw94 · 28/09/2022 12:30

Well I've learnt you can turn them off now! Nope used it for over a year but never had to send via RM.

Hotandbothereds · 28/09/2022 12:33

Yabu you it’s your responsibility to sort out the delivery options you’re willing for people to use, it’s annoying but it’s not the fault of Vinted or the person buying.

SuzieBishop · 28/09/2022 12:51

This happened to me too OP - I had just started using Vinted and so I was out of pocket a pound or so. I've now turned off the royal mail option and only do Evri!

Greysofa · 28/09/2022 12:51

I don’t offer Royal Mail anymore for this reason. Vinted is great in some ways but the postage situation at the moment is shocking be it with Royal Mail, Evri or any of the others!

abw94 · 28/09/2022 12:54

The issue with RM is there's so many options Vinted obviously haven't got it on their systems which is leaving sellers out of pocket.

Maybe I'm too comfortable with having the label being sent to me and all I have to do is drop it off!

SpinningFloppa · 28/09/2022 12:56

I had this happen to me bought an item and selected Royal Mail the seller then cancelled the item telling me it was going to cost more than she had put for her to post it, was really annoying because she waited a week before telling me! So yabu

I told her the issue within minutes of her ordering...

I mean it’s 70p. I’ve have taken the hit because I made the mistake and well, I like to put good out there.

But practically what you could have done is contacted her and told her you weren’t able to get to the post office but if you cancelled the sale you’ll re list with Evri and she can buy it again and you’ll send.

that would have been a better way than just sending her a random note about your error

So you would go out of your way to sort postage out, get packaging, drive 10 mo it's out of your way for.... £2.30?

If it was £5+ I wouldn't have said anything but it's absolutely pointless for £2.30.

OP posts:
abw94 · 28/09/2022 13:23

I also didn't mention she did message initially saying she had chosen Royal Mail due to the delivery issues with Evri.

YABU. As the seller it's up to you to factor the costs properly before you list an item.

Well yeah, if I'd sold it under those conditions, which you did.

MoggyMittens23 · 28/09/2022 13:54

I would have done it this once then changed my settings

flamingogold · 28/09/2022 13:58

Is there anything the buyer could actually do about the postage costs though? I've found that once I've bought and confirmed postage I can't pay extra even if I wanted to. The only option is to cancel and relist. You're just lucky that she did that for you.

lemmein · 28/09/2022 14:36

I'd think you were batshit quibbling over 70p!

ExplodingCarrots · 28/09/2022 14:59

Some of the posters here obviously havnt sold with vinted before . The seller don't set the postage price . This happened to me other day and vinted said they wouldn't refund me the difference . 70p don't sound a lot but when you're only selling things for a couple of quid it makes a difference . When you're buying an item vinted charges you the postage price . It charges the buyer £2.15 for a small parcel with Royal Mail . BUT the cheapest small parcel with royal is £2.80 . So vinted are charging the buyers wrong postage price and leaving sellers out of pocket . It stung me and I've been selling a while . I've turned the option off now. Vinted told me to chase the buyers too . But it's their mistake .

Loics · 28/09/2022 15:02

It is technically Vinted's fault. I've had this happen and messaged them about it - they explained that their "small" parcel isn't the same as Royal Mail, so it fits the description for every other carrier on their platform, but for Royal Mail you have to list it as a medium parcel, which will equate to RM's dimensions for a small parcel. Their customer service is absolutely diabolical by the way, in case you were considering messaging them.
I did just send as wasn't bothered about the 70p, but it also wasn't out of my way to post the items. I've now turned Royal Mail off as an option when listing anything.

Precipice · 28/09/2022 15:03

What did you want the buyer to do? The buyer agreed to pay a sum as selected by you and Vinted. It's not the buyer's fault if the postage costs more than vinted charged.

Allthecoloursoftherainbow · 28/09/2022 15:43

This just happened to me too....I've just chalked it up to experience rather than go after the buyer for 70p

LizzieMacQueen · 28/09/2022 15:47

Is the issue that when you list something you need to select small/med/large as parcel options but small ( to one person ) is not necessarily going to fit in a large letter - 2.5 cm deep - envelope ?

zingally · 28/09/2022 16:32

YABU.

It's on you as the seller to set a postage cost and method that's right for you. It's nothing to do with the buyer. They'll either buy it or they won't. It's not on the buyer to cover your mistake.

flamingogold · 28/09/2022 16:35

In that case, you disable the option of using Royal Mail so the buyer can't select it. Once it is there and the buyer has selected it, the only option is to cancel the whole transaction.

lapasion · 28/09/2022 16:36

I would have honoured the purchase and put it down to learning the ropes with Vinted. At least you’d start building your seller rating.

Yeah definitely review your postage settings before you send anything else. The Inpost lockers are crap too, I’d recommend removing them.

I wouldn’t buy from you (or anyone) if I knew you used evri. They are utterly, utterly shit and cause hassle every time.
