The swishy blonde ponytail mums and others

Doeshethinkhesinpeakyblinders · 21/09/2022 17:38

Just started school run for the first time with my dc, interesting to observe the different mums.
The type of mum I want to be the most is one of the bouncy, swishy blonde ponytails ones wearing gym gear. I also saw the well put together, professional ones in the suits…perfect make up and jewellery..reeking of class and top organisational skills.
Then we have the mums with more than one, usually juggling the bags with the tiny baby or errant toddler, slightly stressy looking or just gone-completely dead tired.
As it happens I’m the fairly inconspicuous one who shuffles past-jeans and converse, never really late but almost always just about to be…one dc but still fairly stressy, not bouncy, not well polished…but off home to clean up dog poo.

Which are you?

I’m the mum who has a really well paid professional job but doesn’t always dress like it.

stop putting women in little neat boxes!!

weaseley · 21/09/2022 17:40

I'm not a cartoon character.

Bringonthebloodydrama · 21/09/2022 17:41

The one who doesn't even get out the car

They're just people, not characters in a soap

Do you read the Daily Mail?

pompomdaisy · 21/09/2022 17:42

None. I guess if I was going to put me in a box. The professional woman who wears slouchy jumpers and scruffy clothes because I work from home but not in an industry that requires me to power dress.

MrsMitford3 · 21/09/2022 17:44

Yikes @Doeshethinkhesinpeakyblinders I think you may need your tin hat.

People don't really like to be stereotyped-particularly with 4 choices.

Feels like a tiktok quiz...

needthiswilderness · 21/09/2022 17:44

Ugh please say this isn’t real

LetMeGoogleThat · 21/09/2022 17:46

I've been in evey category, doesn't bother me.. ...apart from the one's who judge based sorely on appearances 🙄

AutumnIsHere21 · 21/09/2022 17:46

I think the OP is making a lighthearted observation about the gauntlet that is the school run not publishing a paper in The Sociological Review.

I too want to be ‘swishy pony-tail and gym’ mum. I’m actually ‘leave for work too early to take my kids to school’ mum so no-one knows what I look like!

HeyMicky · 21/09/2022 17:48

All of the above, depending on the day, the weather, and what I've got on for work that day.

But I mostly send them on the bus to avoid exactly this kind of nonsense

RudsyFarmer · 21/09/2022 17:48

I’m going to guess I look pretty well put together but i‘m winging it.

Ontobetterthings · 21/09/2022 17:49

I am in the Senior Management team and earn a high salary. However, when I do school runs im in no make up and joggers and look windswept 😂

GiantTortoise · 21/09/2022 17:49

My school run days are behind me (DC now at secondary). I sometimes used to turn up in workout gear and go for a run straight after drop off, but I'm overweight and definitely don't have a swishy blonde pony tail!

Stroopwaffle5000 · 21/09/2022 17:50

I'm a 'swishy blond ponytail gym mum' but I also have ADHD, depression and struggle to function like a normal person sometimes 🤣 Looks can be deceiving!

BeanieTeen · 21/09/2022 17:51

I’m the one you don’t see because I drop off at breakfast club and pick up at after school club.
If that wasn’t the case I’d like to think I’m not the saddo looking around categorising other mums because I have a bit more going on in my brain than that.

Agree - lighthearted thread. We can all joke.

I would love to be a swishy, shiny ponytail mum (but am not!) I work, but don't power dress and never look particularly well turned out. No matter, because my drop off is like a drive by shooting owing to the speed that it is accomplished (I am not a morning person, so always hovering on the edges of being late). I think its fair to say that none of the other mums would recognise me if we met in calmer circs.

MarshaBradyo · 21/09/2022 17:53

The phrase swishy blonde ponytail is irritating

Sounds like a pony

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 21/09/2022 17:54

People are being very snappy towards the OP.

I envy anyone with a swishy ponytail, mine never swishes to the extent I wish for it to swish.

I'm the one in the ancient wedding dress mooning about my lost love who jilted me all those years ago. There's always a couple of those Wink

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 21/09/2022 17:54

Well I have to go to work so I dress professionally with full make up and hair done nicely. But I absolutely loathe these kind of threads which just aim to have little digs at any woman who:

  • dresses Nicely
  • dresses down
  • looks nice
  • looks awful
  • goes to work after pick ip
  • goes home after pick up
  • breathe
Pickingmyselfup · 21/09/2022 17:55

On a Monday I'm blonde swishy ponytail gym mum. I even have gymshark clothes too 😱

Tuesday -Friday I'm the work mum, not professional or expensive looking though, I work as a waitress so I wear an apron.

If I happen to have a day off and I'm not going to the gym then I can be slob mum in tracksuit bottoms and a hoody, a dressy mum dolled up if I've been out or something in between, looking presentable and nicely dressed but nothing to write home about.

I can be pyjama mum too but they are just tracksuit bottoms so nobody would know I've just got out of bed.

I'm always the grumpy one though because my children in the morning make me want to tear my hair out.

the80sweregreat · 21/09/2022 17:57

There was always a mix at the gates many moons ago , the ones who had the better paid jobs you didn't see as they would be at the breakfast club drop off , early doors.
I see a lot more dads now doing the various pick ups and drop offs and many are also off to work too. ( I live close to a primary school) in suits etc.

Belladonnamama · 21/09/2022 17:57

I have been all of the above and one time or another.

Doeshethinkhesinpeakyblinders · 21/09/2022 17:57

Oh wow, it was supposed to be lighthearted, sorry 😬
Wasn't meant to cause offence..at all…I’m new to it all and really *Want to be the good looking, healthy ponytail type or the super professional one..I’m just the shit one and need to up my game 🙈

A Croydon facelift and Primani. A style classic

MrsScrubbingbrush · 21/09/2022 17:59

@Doeshethinkhesinpeakyblinders try reading The Hive by Gill Hornby before you become one of the blonde swishy ponytailed Mums.

ThickCutSteakChips · 21/09/2022 17:59

What about the dads OP? Are we labelling them with stereotypes too, or is it just the women?
