I live in dresses but I cannot STAND the floral trend that's all over the place and the weird scratchy materials (polyester etc) are abhorrent.

AIBU if I ask your recommendations for inexpensive, plain jersey or cotton-based dresses? Why are they so hard to find? Why is everything patterned?

Please help Mumsnet! Else I shall have to go into autumn naked.

If you search for "plain jersey dress", you'll see them in M&S, John Lewis, Cotton Traders, Studio, Roman, Bon Marche, New Look, Simply Be - etc. Ranges £12-35 depending on your budget.

Wifflywafflywoo · 20/09/2022 10:59

H&M and eBay are my jersey dress places 😊

SpeckledlyHen · 20/09/2022 11:04

Phase eight do a long tee shirt dress. It is amazing, so thick so no visible lines or lumps and bumps showing. It's heavy so hangs really well. Plain black or turquoise. Best dress ever!

I also live in dresses (but don’t mind patterns) - Boden are great for jersey dresses and have some plain designs. If you Google ‘Boden discount code’ you can generally find at least 10% off.

Popsy and Roman Originals are great for cheaper jersey dresses but most of them have patterns.

IroningThrone · 20/09/2022 11:11

What did you wear last year? I'm sure you could wear those dresses again!

Caspianberg · 20/09/2022 11:12

Boden are good for jersey. Great for travel

Fairyliz · 20/09/2022 11:14

I’m with you op. There are some plain dresses around but they tend to be minis or maxi’s rather than knee length which is what I want.

Badknitter · 20/09/2022 11:19

aestheticlaundry.com/ do lovely dresses amongst other items. Not cheap but they do have some good offers on

I thought I was being super smart but losing weight this year, but then everything I loved looks tent-y on me. I've tried belts but it's not cutting it.

Phase Eight used to do incredible plain wrap dresses but now it's mostly floral scratchy stuff.

Weird fish Tallahassee are nice. Mountain warehouse also do nice ones

RaRaRaspoutine · 20/09/2022 11:27

Oh my god @uncomfortablydumb53 I think you've just changed my life. I had NO IDEA Mountain Warehouse did dresses and the first dress I've seen on there is EXACTLY what I want.

Don't do popsy, might as well wear a bin bag they're so synthetic. A coworker of mine wears them and you can smell her from a mile off on days she wears them as there is no wicking whatsoever.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 20/09/2022 11:30

Oh I'm pleased they're good for you
My friend was wearing one and I asked where she got it!
I thought they just did outdoorsy things!

GingerGloucester · 20/09/2022 11:36

I picked up a plain black jersey dress from sainsburys a couple of months ago

Vetiver · 20/09/2022 11:40

I get mine from Lily & Me, White Stuff, Mistral and Seasalt (usually second hand)… I like patterns but I’m sure they do some plainer ones too

Usernumber1squillion · 20/09/2022 12:13

Mountain warehouse is saying their dresses are selling out fast today is it you lot? I might have just picked up the navy striped one

FredrikaPeri · 20/09/2022 12:14

Boden

Usernumber1squillion · 20/09/2022 12:15

As another option Mind the charity shop sell new old lines. Ours has a load of seasalt jersey dresses in at the moment so it might be worth checking your local one.

You mentioned Phase Eight earlier so try searching for 'Phase Eight Becca Batwing dress' - this seems to be a staple dress that they stock every autumn/winter in a variety of different colours and it's very flattering on, much to my pleased surprise. They do tend to sell out in popular sizes so by the time of the Black Friday sale, when they're normally offering 20% off, you can't always get what you want if you've delayed. Speaking from experience.

ElizabethBest · 20/09/2022 12:20

I am wearing this dress right now and it's AMAZING. It's so soft and comfy, I love it so much! aestheticlaundry.com/products/calf-grazer-boxy-short-sleeved-dress-black I have it in long sleeve too.

I love that. Would you mind telling me what the sizing like? It’s unclear from the reviews and annoyingly it says on the website the model is wearing a size 10, when the dress only comes in S M L etc.
