I’ve been tasked with writing a quiz about the year 1980 (will extend to general 80s if I have to)

Do you have any cracking trivia? General knowledge, politics music, sport etc

ElegantlyTouched · 18/09/2022 14:45

Here's all the number ones of the year. Am sure you could get a round out of this.

Zimbabwe gained its independence from the UK in 1980.

LaQuern · 18/09/2022 14:52

Maybe something about the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, which the US and a whole bunch of countries (including the UK?) boycotted for political reasons?
Something like: what event was boycotted by xx countries in the summer of 1980?

SpinCityBlues · 18/09/2022 14:58

You could use the Number Ones to devise questions in a mini-round, e.g.:

The theme from MASH was number 1 in May 1980 - what does MASH stand for?

Johnny Logan also had a Number 1 hit in May 1980 - what was his other Eurovision hit that he performed himself?

Geno was Number 1 for Dexy's Midnight Runners in April 1980 - on a scale of 1 to 10, how annoying is Kevin Rowland? Bonus points for suitably pejorative adjectives.

AdaColeman · 18/09/2022 14:58

You could have a round about who won various Oscars that year.

SkiingIsHeaven · 18/09/2022 15:00

What did you get free with your Pepe jeans?

These clips. Does anyone else remember these?

To ask you to help me write a quiz about 1980?
InterviewWorry · 18/09/2022 15:03

Fame, Raging Bull, The Empire Strikes Back- all released in 1980- something about one of them?

If you're asking about the Oscars, remember the 1980 Oscar winner is a 1979 film and so on.

SpinCityBlues · 18/09/2022 15:04

Yeah, I'm crap on film dates and Oscar winners when Pointless is on!

x2boys · 18/09/2022 15:09

Fashion and favourite TV programmes .

Pinkywoo · 18/09/2022 15:09

It was a bad year for music, John Lennon, John Bonham and Bon Scott all died in 1980.

ItsOnlyWordsInnit · 18/09/2022 15:09

Having looked at a couple of ‚what happened in 1980‘ type sites, I‘ll add:

Rubik‘s Cube was first introduced in 1980 ( at a London toy fair in Jan).

Mount St Helens exploded in Washington State.

AdaColeman · 18/09/2022 15:15

Rubik's cube was the best selling toy at Christmas 1980.

Gastheif · 18/09/2022 15:19

These are great, I’m nearly there with it! Thanks so much 😊

Where were the 1980 winter Olympics held? (Lake Placid)

It was a bad year for music, John Lennon, John Bonham and Bon Scott all died in 1980.

So did Ian Curtis, lead singer of Joy Division. You could have a question about which band did the other members of Joy Division go on to form (New Order) or something like 'What was the name of Joy Division's most successful single, released two months after Ian Curtis's death, the title of which is also inscribed on his tombstone?' (Love Will Tear Us Apart).

AdaColeman · 18/09/2022 15:41

William Golding's Rites of Passage won the Booker Prize, in 1980, but there was a bit of a controversy that year as another contender refused to attend the ceremony unless he was told in advance that he was the winner!

MedPara · 18/09/2022 15:43

Which popular soap opera was shown for the first time in the UK in October 1980?

Neighbours

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/09/2022 15:45

A few political questions.

Who was the UK Prime Minister in 1980? (Margaret Thatcher)

Who won the US Presidential Election in November 1980? (Ronald Reagan)
[A harder question would be Who was the US President in 1980? Jimmy Carter. Lots of people would say Reagan, who was inaugurated in 1981.]

Who was the President of France? (Valéry Giscard d'Estaing) [I'd have said Mitterrand, so this could be a tricky question]

Who was the Leader of the USSR? (Leonid Brezhnev)

Who was the Leader of the People's Republic of China? Deng Xiaoping

Which woman was elected Prime Minister of India for the second time in 1980? Indira Gandhi
