To ask if Windsor/or Woking is quite busy now because of the Queen

Bit of an odd question but tried googling but no luck
Was supposed to arrange to meet childhood friend who lives in Windsor. Havent seen him for years and I actually said I would do it this evening as I have Mondays off.

We arranged to meet Woking area and maybe head into London
However, with the Queen's passing I am wondering if it will be too busy? Hate gping on packed trains. Luckily I jave somewhere to stay but if I plan to stay another night would look for hotel

Is it meant to be busier now (the Woking/Windsor area)
Does anyone know what it was like last night?

Thanks

Windsor is very busy.

Macbeth8 · 11/09/2022 16:32

Thanks any idea if people are heading into the neighbouring areas for hotels (i.e Woking or Ascot)
Are the roads busier?

Just got back from Windsor. Windsor was busy but roads around ok for us.

Talipesmum · 11/09/2022 16:34

There are rail replacement buses from Woking train station today so I wouldn’t plan to go through there on the train if you have other options. Not sure what time the trains start back up but it’s still buses at the moment. You can see if you look at the route on Google maps.

I wouldn’t think Woking would be at all busy in relation to the queen though- it’s nowhere near Windsor and quite unrelated with no particular royal connection.

SheWoreYellow · 11/09/2022 16:34

Woking isn’t very near Windsor.

Talipesmum · 11/09/2022 16:35

I mean, it’s near ish but not as near as loads of other places.

gatehouseoffleet · 11/09/2022 16:44

Windsor is (very) busy according to local acquaintances but Woking is nowhere near Windsor or London (I mean, it's about 30 mins on the train from London but it's not in the least bit royal despite the visit of someone to the Pizza Express there).

Somewhere like Egham or Staines might be ok.

O11 · 11/09/2022 16:45

Why would Woking be busy? Are people paying their respects outside Pizza Express?

Macbeth8 · 11/09/2022 18:18

Ah ok no idea why Windsor friend said everywhere outside Windsor is busy so to be aware. I only managed to get an Air bnb in Woking sorry thats why I keep asking..thought it was a half an hour drive so roads connected.?

My friend drives and basically said he can pick me up and go to a bar weve been thinking off but now is saying he wouldnt chance the roads! Bit odd I know!

Omg is Woking supposed to be rough or something??

Woking is quite rough, are you there now?

Wickywickyyow · 11/09/2022 18:25

I'm in Windsor and just looked up eta to Woking, it's 38 minutes! The roads are much busier around Windsor but that means old Windsor, Datchet, Eton etc not Woking!

As an aside we've had a right problem.wigh people just abandoning their cars as the car parks are full. If you're coming round the area please don't do that, it's causing further chaos and it's a security problem.

Macbeth8 · 11/09/2022 18:26

No on the way but didnt realise!
Ive booked on a whim very last miniute as usual. I dont know much about surrounding areas. It looked to me Woking was closest place I could find for accommodation so looks like its busy because of the Queens passing.

Im annoyed as its almost as if hes making excuses. I hate getting round down South . (Such a Northerner!) So was banking on he would be driving up here to pick me up etc

When we say rough how rough are we talking? 😐

InternetRandom · 11/09/2022 18:33

What's he suggesting doing then? Just not meeting? I'd be unimpressed.

SheWoreYellow · 11/09/2022 18:34

It’s not unsafe, just not nice enough to be a tourist destination.

Macbeth8 · 11/09/2022 18:43

@InternetRandom

Saying for me to get a train down Windsor!! Bit off a piss take .

Have no idea about Woking..is it a good area to have a drink in?
I plan to maybe go to a bar by myself first instead of sat in the hotel waiting for him to reply

FlippityFlippityFlop · 11/09/2022 19:02

As @SheWoreYellow said. It's not unsafe - but not somewhere you would go as a tourist. It has the usual Slug and Lettuce type places and also a wine bar close to the station.

There's a curfew in Woking for a reason! You need to be indoors by 9pm.

omg I never realised I’ve been escaping with my life for the past 12 years - it’s fine, OP. It’s not a destination place like Windsor but there are plenty of decent places to go for a drink in the town centre now - unlike when we moved here 12 years ago and it really was just the slug and lettuce.

But like I said, there’s no trains from woking station today so don’t try to catch one. All replacement buses.

Island House or the cellar magnifique place are nice for a drink.

MumofSpud · 11/09/2022 22:00

Was in Windsor today - am local - the queues to get into the car parks were horrendous and people were getting v frustrated!
I'd advise getting the train in
And don't rely on being able to buy flowers here either!

WeAreAllLionesses · 11/09/2022 22:23

We had an appointment booked in Windsor today - when I saw the crowds on local FB I rang to postpone, and they told me it was horrendous in the centre of town and that people had been dumping their cars in their private (medical) car park. Think people

But op, sounds like you are going on a date with someone who's not making that much effort...?

ArnoldBee · 11/09/2022 22:43

If Prince Andrew can go to Woking Pizza Express you'll be fine.

csla · 12/09/2022 21:00

We're hoping to visit Windsor on the weekend to pay tribute as getting to central London will be too difficult with three young children. I appreciate Windsor is still very busy atm. We were planning on travelling early (from South Wales) and spending a few hours in the great park. Can anyone advise on where to park? I understand tributes are being left at the Cambridge gate, where is this in relation to the town? I'm not familiar with Windsor. Thanks

CatGrins · 12/09/2022 21:18

The Castle and Camvidge Gate are in the town centre. There are lots if car parks but they've all been very busy so just park where you can. Victoria Street car park, King Edward cat park, Windsor Yards, Home Park are a fre you could try in the town centre.
