AIBU?
Rees- Mogg appointed minister for climate and energy
TenRedThings · 07/09/2022 12:10
Liz Truss has gone and put fossil fuel loving, deregulation-obsessed, rich as Croesus, Jacob Rees Mogg in charge of both energy & climate crises. AIBU to believe this is going to be disastrous for anyone who doesn't have investments in fossil fuels ?
MistyGreenAndBlue · 07/09/2022 12:14
I just saw this a few minutes ago
I audibly groaned.

More of the same.
’Truss, who was in charge at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) between 2014 and 2016, oversaw “efficiency” plans set out in the 2015 spending review to reduce Environment Agency funding by £235m.
This included a £24m cut from a government grant for environmental protection, including surveillance of water companies to prevent the dumping of raw sewage, between 2014-15 and 2016-17, according to the National Audit Office.
It represents almost a quarter of the funding cut from this area between 2010, when the grant stood at £120m, and 2020, by which time it had fallen to £40m.
Labour analysis of official figures shows that since 2016 raw sewage discharge in England and Wales has doubled, from 14.7 spill events per overflow to 29.4 in 2021. Greenpeace said the figures showed Truss had “sewage on her hands”.

A creek that's full of deregulated sewage !

It's an absolutely dreadful appointment and akin to appointing Nick Griffin as your Minister for Equalities.
I sincerely hope his tenure is as short lived as possible and that he and he's ilk are the ones who are forced to deal with any consequences that arise from his idiocy while in charge.
OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 07/09/2022 12:27
What does Mogg have on people? He must have something. He is a sinister character who absolutely terrifies me.
Hmmph · 07/09/2022 12:31
The transport minister is also a climate denier.
Truss is obsessed about oil and gas
FarmerRefuted · 07/09/2022 12:33
It's like putting Myra Hindley in charge of a fucking orphanage.
This cabinet is a shitshow.
SpinCityBlues · 07/09/2022 12:34
What a fucking joke.
He's a fucking political, ethical and moral knob. And I hate his clothes and hair, just to be equal opps about it.

Where are her friends / investments ?

Penny 'TWAW TMAM' Mordaunt is Leader of the House of Commons. Whole separate thread I guess.

There are a lot of Conservatives who see us leaving Europe as an opportunity to cut all kinds of regulations - things that were regulated even before we joined the EU. Employment law, environmental protections, farming regulations covering things like permitted pesticides and antibiotic usage in animals.

The Health Secretary is anti abortion.
See thread about this
Health Secretary has stated she will be making no changes to abortion laws.
It's good to have politicians who can keep their personal beliefs out of their public policy-making. The Health Secretary looks set fair to do that.
Is Rees-Mogg also capable?
Sofachoices · 07/09/2022 12:42
Well isn’t that just a thread title that makes you jump for joy 😰
The man is vile.

He has gimlet eyes. Would hate to work with him.
CapMarvel · 07/09/2022 12:43
The whole cabinet, with the possible exception of Kwasi Kwarteng who does seem to have half a brain and, for once, actually has a background in economics is a fucking joke.
In addition to Mogg, who very quickly regailed on his "I'll never serve another PM pledge" we have James Cleverly and Suella Braverman who don't have a braincell between them and a rabid pro-life, pro-privatization health secretary.
Dominic Raab has gone though, so there is at least that.
GonnaGetGoingReturns · 07/09/2022 12:47
God - they'll hate him at BEIS!
I used to know a few policy people at Defra when I contracted there and one of them regularly saw Jacob walk past him on his way to HOC and said he looked exactly like a Slytherin.
Another DD I worked for in Defra (lovely woman, honestly!) used to work with/for Priti Patel at Dept for Education and one day (totally out of character for her!) went on a 10 minute rant about how much she hated Priti.
TenRedThings · 07/09/2022 12:50
Suella Braverman, appointed home secretary is set to take us out of the European convention on human rights. Hold on tight folks, your rights as you know it are set to be decimated!

Most of them are intertwined in some way or the other. Michael Gove is another who strikes terror into hearts of others.
I did know briefly someone who works in politics (think tank? not CS) and is actually friends with JRM, Gove et al (not all of them). It's a really sinister, creepy world there, not even joking.

She is not however going to abrogate our obligations under the UN convention (on which the European offshoot convention is modelled) so this isn't a bonfire of human rights

Might we get some strategic reserves of our own now and ignore the renewables only & anti-nuclear clowns.
However nice it would be to rely on Wind and Solar, we cannot yet. In this crisis we need everything we can get. We are likely to need these for some years yet.
I have close knowledge and a different perspective from DH who is a mining engineer.
