To not be impressed that Liz Truss is our Prime Minister

I keep reading tweets from Tory MPs waxing lyrical about how great and progressive it is that we have our third female Tory PM and how amazing it is, considering Labour hasn’t even had a female leader of their party.

As a woman I am not excited to see Liz Truss as Prime Minister. She is not progressive and definitely is not an advocate for women’s rights (she wants to give tax cuts to stay at home mothers FFS, but is ignoring the cost of childcare crisis forcing so many women out of work)! I don’t see Liz Truss as an inspiration or an allie, I see her as a puppet of the patriarchy.

Hopefully one day we will have a female PM who will truly fight for women’s equality and rights and will break down the walls the patriarchy have built up! Please tell me I’m not the only one who feels like this?

Loics · 05/09/2022 16:21

YANBU. She's a gift for Labour though, won't be good while she is in power but she's basically signing the Tories' death warrant.

lljkk · 05/09/2022 16:23

It won't be hard for LT to exceed our expectations.

lucielou82 · 05/09/2022 16:23

@Loics bloody hope so! One more painful year to endure!

The thing is, this autumn and winter may be very difficult for many people. I wonder if this is rather a poisoned chalice.

TheJudgment · 05/09/2022 16:31

We’re fucked

Yeah, it's that year that's the kicker, it's going to be tough for a lot of people, very tough! That's the worrying part, she'll wreak havoc then leave an even bigger miss for Labour to try to clear up (or be blamed for, if not!).

^ Yes indeedy.

In fairness she hasn’t started yet and it’s an utterly shite time….. I don’t expect much, but then who has done a good job? No one can please everyone.

Plus they’re all in it for themselves. 🤷🏼‍♀️

lucielou82 · 05/09/2022 16:34

@TheJudgment do we laugh or cry? Or both! FFS

Can’t wait for Labour to get in and sort out all our problems.

How is giving tax cuts to stay at home women against womens rights? Surely it is given them the option to choose to stay at home. Not every mother wants to be a high flying career woman.

I never wanted to be a 'high flying career woman' but had to go back to work when I left my abusive ex husband. It was my choice when I was a stay at home mum so why should anyone else's taxes have funded it? Why now, should I fund it for others? There is very little help for single parents, let's face it, mostly mothers. But then of course the stigma is still there. How did Boris describe our children before? Ill-raised and illegitimate, wasn't it?

I think Labour will still struggle without Scotland.

She’s been an MP for years and held senior cabinet positions. She’s spent six weeks touring the country telling us all about what she’ll do when she’s PM.

She is not coming into this role as a complete unknown quantity.

billysboy · 05/09/2022 17:13

Labour are not a credible alternative and are stuck without support from snp

I hate to break it to you but it’s likely to be over two years until the next general election, which must be held by January 2025, can’t see them calling it any sooner to be honest!

Same here. I'm even toying with voting for them next election so we can have labour bashing threads for a change.

They are gaining momentum though, they're ahead of the Conservatives in the polls at the moment. I think many voters, myself included, would vote for an elderly, rabid and slightly confused donkey to be PM instead of a Tory at the moment! I'd like to say that was an exaggeration, but I'm not actually sure.

What century are you living in ?.

loudlylikealion · 05/09/2022 17:57

Its up to you really how you feel about it. YANBU.

IncompleteSenten · 05/09/2022 17:59

We'd be equally fucked whichever of them got it.

neverbeenskiing · 05/09/2022 18:03

Liz Truss does not care about womens rights. The only thing Liz Truss cares about is the continued advancement of Liz Truss, hence why she constantly flip-flops and u-turns on important issues depending on which way the wind is blowing at the time. I agree with PP, we're fucked.

Parky04 · 05/09/2022 18:09

If she sorts out the energy crisis, then I will vote Conservative again.
