AIBU?
Do we really want a PM who has decided that...
Nobetterthansheoughttobe · 05/09/2022 08:59
...we import too much cheese and we don't need motorway speed limits?
Hasn't she read the room?
No-one threatens my choice of cheese without a fight!
Am I being unreasonable?

Cheese would be totally top of my agenda right now if I was PM. I can't think of a more important issue!
GoneWithTheWine1 · 05/09/2022 09:08
I can't imagine the motor way speed limit thing would be passed. She also wants to get rid of the royal family.....
Pedallleur · 05/09/2022 09:11
Dont think that opinion will be voiced if she goes to Balmoral

Yep.
Glad to see her priorities are in order.🙄
antelopevalley · 05/09/2022 09:39
I agree with her about getting rid of the Royal Family.
balalake · 05/09/2022 09:44
You could add a number of other things to your list. All talk and little action is one I would start with.
chantico · 05/09/2022 09:44
How many years ago was the cheese thing? And wasn't she speaking to a gathering of British cheese makers at the time? Or some other group of British manufacturers and using cheese as an example. Reading the room there would surely have led to the championing of expansion of domestic market
She's dead wrong about motorways though
icelolly12 · 05/09/2022 09:49
I feel like she detests everyone who isn't loaded and won't need any state support... quite scary really.

She was speaking at the Tory party conference NOT the association of master cheese makers.
She was a Govt minister at the time too.
Her new trade agreements will, according to the farmers union, wreck UK farming, leading to more imports not less.

Both candidates are fuckwits and I don't want either. Not that I get a say of course, because that right is reserved for an unelected, self selecting and entirely unrepresentative cohort of people. What a crap system.
chantico · 05/09/2022 10:00
Thanks @Alexandra2001 I misremembered (though I'm still reasonably sure aim was to boost domestic sales, without going the full 'buy British' - not then acceptable under EU norms).
Because it was back in 2014 (I've just googled for the date)
KangarooKenny · 05/09/2022 10:04
if I was PM i’d get rid of those motorways with no hard shoulder.
Iwantmyoldnameback · 05/09/2022 10:04
How have we ended up here? She was, in my opinion, the worst of the original candidates. And there were better that didn't stand.

Crap, and entirely undemocratic. We have been shafted.

This, in spades.

I disagree about the cheese, we need more if anything
Faster motorway speeds would be most welcome . It would be nice not to be a "criminal"
Just for making decent progress

Read this from this morning's Guardian for a list of obstructive "decisions" Truss has already made regarding the energy crisis before she even walks into no 10:

But the traffic wont change, the speeds will go higher and those who can will exceed the new limit. Its self perpetuating. Speed limit 85mph some one will go to 90 plus. In all conditions. Your stopping distance increases exponentially. Higher speeds arent a magic wand to solve traffic problems. the problem is the volume of traffic
FourChimneys · 05/09/2022 10:35
PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior Thank you. You have written my post for me.
Popaholic · 05/09/2022 10:40
@KangarooKenny it cost over a billion quid to turn the M4 into a Smart motorway. I don't like it, but I don't want them spending another £300m putting it back the way it was.
I'm hoping Liz Truss just does something vaguely sensible about energy prices and then not much else. I suspect she will be the kind of PM who makes everything worse. I would be delighted to discover I'm wrong.

Myself and many many others already do 80/85mph . Surely it would almost be self governing. If theres lots of traffic you wont be able to hit those speeds, and when it's less congested you can.
Because of the increased stopping distance you just increase the gap between vehicles . It's not rocket science. Countries with higher speed limits manage just fine
