.. to ask if anyone has managed to get their Covid test result confirmation in Welsh?

5foot5 · 02/09/2022 22:48

To be clear - I am not Welsh, nor do I speak Welsh. However, I noticed that this is an option when you report your LFT result and ask for confirmation, so the last two times I have reported a result I have ticked this option.

Have I received confirmation in Welsh? Have I thump. I get email and text notification but still only in English.

Tonight DD was doing a LFT because a work colleague had tested positive. She also requested the Welsh version. Nope, only English received.

So just interested if anyone has had this work for them. Or if not and you are a Welsh speaker rather than an English speaker just doing this for the novelty value, are you really pissed off about this?

What’s the point? Why are you so bothered? You must be really bored..

Felixfriend · 02/09/2022 22:54

I think it’s very interesting! I’m sure if it never worked then there would have been an outcry from Welsh speakers (I certainly know a few who would have selected this option). Maybe it only works if you’re registered with NHS in Wales?

DrMadelineMaxwell · 02/09/2022 22:55

Are you in Wales? When it was PCRs to get covid results I got my results in both Welsh (which came first) then English, without asking for the option.

MarshaMelrose · 02/09/2022 22:55

If you don't speak Welsh, why would you want it in Welsh? You wouldn't know what it said.

Felixfriend · 02/09/2022 22:56

Lots of Welsh speakers live in England

5foot5 · 02/09/2022 22:56

Did I say I was so bothered? It is an option. I requested it out of curiosity to see what the Welsh language version looked like. It doesn't appear to work. Idle curiosity to see if anyone had this work.

Not bored at all. Does trying things out and trying new ways of doing something sound like that?

But how does the app know I don't speak Welsh?

OP posts:

But you wouldn't have been able to read it. It might have come back saying, 5foot hasn't got covid but they have got cooties so we advise you not to let them in. And you wouldn't know.

Tiredmum100 · 02/09/2022 23:03

I live in Wales. I get both and the Welsh comes through first.

Onlyforcake · 02/09/2022 23:04

I've had it through in Welsh and I live in England. I don't share my location though.

Purplepepsi · 02/09/2022 23:07

I did by accident!!! Am in England.

Same. I am Welsh and I get the Welsh message before the English one.

Heyjoewhatdoyouknow · 02/09/2022 23:09

@MarshaMelrose doggedly missing the point here 😆(and OP could have used Google translate if it had come back in Welsh)

Anyway, maybe use a Welsh postcode and see if you get different results. And do come back to update us.

NightCrow · 02/09/2022 23:10

It's postcode driven. If you have a Welsh postcode you can opt for a Welsh notification. If you have a non-Welsh postcode you can't. This is regardless of whether you are a Welsh speaker or not. The reason is that the Welsh Language Act requires certain public bodies to produce notifications etc in Welsh (it'a a little more nuanced then that, but that's it in a nutshell).

NightCrow · 02/09/2022 23:11

Correction/clarification. If you are in a job-Welsh postcode area you can opt for the notification but you won't get it as there us no requirement to produce a notification in Welsh for anywhere but Wales/Welsh postcodes

That would be hilarious. But let's face it, we have all seen so many of these confirmation messages now that we don't really read them do we?

I was just curious to take this option which, as far as I can see, doesn't work.

Maybe they only test for Welsh Covid and you haven't had it. Cymronavirus.

But they do offer it as an option.

So you are saying that if the app can detect you live in England then they will not send it in Welsh even if you ask for it?

Seems a bit jobsworth given that it can't be any more effort. The translation must be available do why not just send it if requested?

I got some of ours solely in Welsh. I didn't pick that as an option, am not Welsh, don't speak (much) Welsh but do live in Wales.

Mae canlyniad eich prawf PCR (neu brawf labordy arall) yn negatif. Mae'n debygol nad oedd y feirws arnoch pan gynhaliwyd y prawf.

Rhowch eich canlyniad ar ap COVID-19 y GIG gan ddefnyddio'r cod hwn: XXX

Camau i gadw'n ddiogel:

  • Cael brechlyn
  • Golchi dwylo'n rheolaidd
  • Lawrlwytho ap COVID-19 y GIG
  • Agor ffenestri wrth gwrdd dan do
  • Gwisgo gorchudd wyneb mewn llefydd prysur dan do ac ar drafnidiaeth gyhoeddus
  • Aros gartref os nad ydych yn teimlo'n dda
  • Cael prawf a hunanynysu os oes angen

I hope you enjoyed the experience of getting negative yng Gymraeg. What's really weird is when I tested positive I only got the result in English.

Interesting.

That sounds like it has a default language which depends on your postcode and the option to request Welsh or not is basically ignored

No idea OP? Maybe you are speaking Welsh, but I don't speak it so wouldn't know????

Thank you. And do you have a Welsh Post code or tick the box requesting the confirmation in Welsh?

I'm in wales and the text with covid results comes to my phone in both languages- (English and Welsh) I'm assuming it's from being registered with nhs wales?
