To think most kids TV shows these days encourage bratty behaviour?

Just that basically. I feel like you get the odd one where the child(ren) characters aren't being total nightmares. I used to think it was just Peppa Pig who was a little witch, but the more I watch lately they're all just as bad 😂

Peppa's a cunt, banned in this house.

Bluey 👍👍👍
She's a bit spoiled and demanding tbf but she's not a bully

Sirzy · 30/08/2022 10:42

I think it’s always been like that.

Peppa is banned here too!

I'm on the fence with Bluey at the moment, I thought it was great at first but sometimes I do think "wow, you're a bit of a dick" 😂

I hate Bing. He seems almost manipulative, eurghh. Is it just me?!

wb3 · 30/08/2022 10:49

There was always a whiff of anarchy about Paddington in the 70s.

His stare was pure hatred for establishment figures.

Oh he's a little tw*t

And why does Pando constantly take his trousers off?

It's been that way for a while. I remember my younger sister watching Hannah Montana and just thinking what an awful, spoilt and disrespectful brat that character was.

abovedecknotbelow · 30/08/2022 11:02

Peppa is a rude bullying little shite!

Wait until they get onto I Carly, The Thundermans etc it gets worse.

I miss Ben and Holly though, quite liked them

Farmmum77 · 30/08/2022 11:05

I totally agree very few shows without it. I did use to love max and Ruby though!

I've got a sister who was born in 2002, so don't worry I know what lurks on Nickelodeon and Disney Channel. God awful American brats 🤦‍♀️😂

Very true, my far more positive role models in the early 1970s were based on reading Dennis the Menace and Minnie the Minx in the Beano.
I suppose they did at least get their comeuppance at the end of each story 🤣

PinkButtercups · 30/08/2022 11:14

I'm so glad my DS isn't fussed about Peppa Pig! She's a right little twat.

He used to watch Bing and Bing is a brat as well and his stupid whiny voice.

I thought this initially too. Kids being cheeky and mischievous in children’s fiction and tv programs is pretty standard and always has been. But I think ‘back in the day’ it was obvious that they were a bit naughtier than most, they were supposed to be and that was the angle and appeal. Whereas now it’s just sort of billed as regular kid’s behaviour.

MooseBreath · 30/08/2022 11:34

We have a ban on shows with bratty behaviour. Peppa is out, along with Bing, Caillou (a Canadian shitshow), and many more.

We do allow Hey Duggee, Bluey, Cocomelon (it's really not that bad!), The Wiggles, Jo-Jo and Gran Gran, Numberblocks, Mr Tumble, etc.

Zilla1 · 30/08/2022 11:34

Bagpuss and the Wombles were quite ecologically aware with the repairing and repurposing. Mr Benn on expressing himself and helping people. Paddington seemed quite helpful and engaging with different people. Not sure about Camberwick Green/Chigley/Trumpton - recall some helping but lots of deference. Barnaby the Bear was quite internationalist. Thunderbirds has Lady Penelope to avoid outrageous sexism.

CoffeeWithCheese · 30/08/2022 11:35

I would take Peppa over the ridiculously compliant Topsy and Tim any day.

Zilla1 · 30/08/2022 11:36

Dangermouse too. Interesting how different animation solutions were found that were cheap and innovative - Wombles, Mr Benn, Trupton and Paddington all quite different. More variety than the computer animation now. Dangermouse's economy by animating eyeballs in a dark room featured quite a lot when money was tight.

SleeplessInEngland · 30/08/2022 11:37

Always been that way, you just notice it now you're a parent.

MyBottomDecides · 30/08/2022 11:42

DD, aged 5, calling imperiously: "Mummy, a little help here!" made me want to hunt down and kill the writers of Netflix's entire cartoon selection

They're called "Tory and Twat" in our house 👀

Definitely!

Much nicer behaviour in the original Postman Pat series from the 80s (all on YouTube), and Ivor the Engine (BritBox).

We love the original Thomas the Tank engine, though it’s often dark and some engines are badly behaved, the Fat Controller does at least keep them in line. The early 1990s World of Beatrix Potter and friends (YouTube) is far nicer than the current Peter Rabbit on BBC.

Agree re Mr Tumble, Jojo and Gran Gran, Hey Duggee etc. We like them.

I loathe Bing and Peppa and try to keep them to a minimum. We’re currently on a two week TV ban here though for using language that’s not allowed, and this morning DS (3!) spoke to me in a sarky tone. I made it clear that’s not allowed and that I won’t put up with it. Respect starts at home, and I’m not letting him grow up to talk rudely to me and DH.

StClare101 · 30/08/2022 12:11

Peppa is awful and we banned it.

I quite like Bluey and Bingo, but mainly the parents!

Arbesque · 30/08/2022 12:18

I knew I was getting old when I realised I would be one of the irate neighbours marching around to complain to Mr and Mrs Brown about their son's behaviour in the William books.

Oh I'd definetely be the neighbour in "Waffle the Wonder Dog" who complains about his constant barking and the families obnoxious shouting/music playing 😂🤦‍♀️

They literally let their dog escape in to the neighbours house frequently and then she's made out to be the bad guy for complaining!

I also think finding yourself getting surprisingly over invested in some kids tv shows is a rite of passage for parents, is it not?
If you haven’t sat there sleep deprived wondering what the hell happened to Sarah’s parents in ‘Sarah and Duck’ or contemplated whether the ‘adults’ in Bing are actual dead criminals in purgatory living out their punishments caring for bratty whiny kids, are you really a parent? 😂
